How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First thing on arrival
Browse the seasonal shelves at Shikisai Market

The fruit and vegetable selection changes with deliveries. Looking around first helps you choose between a meal and a lighter stop for bread and sweets.

For lunch
Head to Vegefull Kitchen early

Buffet reservation slots and group bookings can change the flow. If lunch is your main reason for visiting, check the restaurant's notices first.

With children
Start with toilets, then bread and the plaza

There are 24-hour toilets and baby changing facilities, followed by bread and gelato options. The station works well as a short stop before fruit picking or a park.

On a rainy day
Keep it to shopping and food

Without adding an outdoor destination, combine the farm shop, prepared foods, bakery and tourist information center for an easy short visit.

In clear weather
Go to Fukushima Teppen Park

Pick up food at the station, then drive uphill to the viewpoint. The views of the Ina Valley and the Alps make Toyooka's terrain clear at a glance.

For seasonal fruit
Peaches, cherries and apples

Fruit-picking seasons and reservation slots change. Check with the tourist information center and individual orchards when pairing a visit with the station.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Visit in fruit season and the market becomes the destination

Toyooka Village is known for peaches, apples, pears and cherries. Shikisai Market reflects the seasons: wild greens and bamboo shoots in spring; peaches and summer vegetables in summer; pears, apples, grapes and chestnuts in autumn; and Ichida dried persimmons and Gensuke turnip greens in winter. Browse the farm shop before deciding what to eat to get a fuller sense of this station.

02

Bread, gelato and prepared foods make a short stop easy

Bread & Sweets Kirara offers milk bread, sandwich loaves and gelato made with local farm produce. With lunch boxes and changing daily dishes from Kurara too, you have options when children may tire of waiting for a restaurant table or you want to eat a little at a time in the car.

03

The tourist information center helps you plan your next stop

The Toyooka Village Tourism Association has a base right beside the station, with information on fruit picking, rental bicycles, flowers, viewpoint parks and camping. After eating and shopping, you could continue to Fukushima Teppen Park on a clear day, cherries and irises in early summer, or peach picking in summer.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Days when you want fruit, vegetables, prepared foods and souvenirs in one stop

Shop for Southern Shinshu's seasonal produce

The day's fruit and vegetable deliveries shape the experience at Shikisai Market. In peach and apple season, browsing the shelves is part of the fun. Add Kurara's changing lunch boxes and processed foods, and the stop can cover dinner shopping too.

Parking → Shikisai Market → Kurara prepared foods → souvenir shelves → Kirara before returning to the car.

Fresh produce can be easier to choose in the morning. Later in the day, enjoy what remains available.

Families or groups who want different sized meals

A vegetable buffet for lunch, or bread and gelato for something lighter

Choose Vegefull Kitchen for a substantial meal, or milk bread and gelato for a quick bite. You can sample Southern Shinshu vegetables, fruit and bread without limiting the group to one shop.

Before lunch, check Vegefull Kitchen's slots; on busy days, switch to bread or prepared foods.

Group reservations and seasonal fairs may change arrangements. Arrive early if lunch is the main purpose of your stop.

Families with preschool children who need toilets and food first

With children, make a short stop before fruit picking or a park

Large play equipment is not the draw here, but toilets, bread, gelato and a little outdoor time make the station a good place to regroup before your next destination. Pair it with information about peach or cherry picking to make the family outing easier.

Toilets → snack at Kirara → tourist information center → Oka no Ue Cherry Orchard or peach picking.

In summer, both the car and outdoor areas get hot. Arrange water and shade before focusing on cold treats.

Drives that could use a Southern Shinshu view

On a clear day, see the river terraces from a viewpoint

The river terraces highlighted by the station become a landscape you can take in from Fukushima Teppen Park. Buy fruit or bread at the station, then pause at the viewpoint to turn a shopping stop into a short excursion.

Minami Shinshu Toyooka Marche → Fukushima Teppen Park. The mountain road is best traveled in daylight.

The view depends on the weather. In rain or fog, staying at the station and tourist information center may be more pleasant.

Shopping before camping, river play or stargazing

Use the station as a starting point for Nodahira Campground

Nodahira Campground lies deeper in the mountains. Buying vegetables, fruit, prepared foods and bread at the station before you go can enrich meals there. With children, allow time for the drive and temperature differences in the hills.

Shop at the station → Nodahira Campground. Check reservation information before setting out.

Weather and temperatures can change quickly in the hills; do not assume mobile reception will match that in town.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★★☆

24-hour toilets, a baby changing station and an indoor shopping route make a short break manageable.

Some days it is easier to finish early with bread or prepared foods than wait a long time for a meal.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Bread, gelato and fruit can help set up an easy stop, with a little fresh air in the plaza before moving on.

For a longer play stop, add Fukushima Teppen Park or fruit picking; the station is not centered on play equipment.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Children can choose fruit at the market, eat gelato, then continue to peach or cherry picking.

Summer heat can tire children quickly; keep outdoor plans short or earlier in the day.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

River terraces, viewpoints, fruit picking and camping can turn a rest stop into a half-day outing.

For Fukushima Teppen Park or Nodahira Campground, plan around weather and driving time.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Do not rely solely on the restaurant when it is busy

At lunchtime or during seasonal events, Vegefull Kitchen's reservation slots and group bookings can change your plans. Keeping bread, prepared foods and gelato as alternatives helps families stay flexible.

Seasonal fruit deliveries are the main attraction

Spring brings strawberries and wild greens; summer, peaches and cherries; autumn, pears, apples and grapes; and winter, Ichida dried persimmons and Gensuke turnip greens. The shelves change, so visiting for the season is especially rewarding.

With children, plan the sequence rather than a long stay

The station is more useful for toilets, a snack, tourist information and a route to fruit picking or a park than for a long stay at a large playground or indoor play area. Taking care of needs in order can make the drive easier.

A rainy-day visit can stay within the station

In poor weather, skip the viewpoint or flowers and keep the stop to the farm shop, prepared foods, bread, gelato and tourist information center. Fruit-picking conditions differ by orchard and plan, so check before setting out in rain.

The landscape is worth a detour in clear weather

The river terraces around the station are easier to appreciate from Fukushima Teppen Park. Take purchases from the farm shop to the viewpoint during daylight for a Southern Shinshu detour.

Check current advice before visiting early-summer flowers

Toyooka Iris Garden is one early-summer option, but the tourism association has held back from actively recommending Ohira Iris Garden in 2026. Choose a currently recommended site when flowers are the goal.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • For fruit, start at the farm shop toward the morning
  • Choose Vegefull Kitchen for lunch, or switch to Kirara and Kurara for lighter food
  • With children, try toilets, a snack and the tourist information center in that order
  • Peach and cherry picking seasons and reservation slots change; plan those visits separately from a shopping-only stop
  • In clear weather, visit Fukushima Teppen Park; in rain, stay at the station and tourist information center
  • For hillside camping or viewpoints, prioritize weather and travel before sunset
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
Farm shop

Peaches, apples, pears and seasonal vegetables

Start at Shikisai Market for a strong sense of Toyooka Village. In fruit season, consider what to eat today as well as what to take home or share, beyond buying a whole box.

Fruit varies with the season, weather and deliveries. Morning is a safer choice if you want a particular variety.

Prepared foods

Kurara lunch boxes and changing daily side dishes

Even without a restaurant meal, prepared foods and lunch boxes made in the shop give you a taste of the station to take away. They also suit a relaxed meal at the next park or your accommodation.

The selection changes daily; enjoy what you find instead of counting on a specific dish.

Bread

Milk bread, coffee milk bread and sandwich loaves

Easy for children to eat, and convenient for a driving snack or to take home. Bread can also bridge the time before or after lunch. Milk bread is a Nagano-style sweet bread, usually filled with milk-flavored cream.

Popular items may sell out. Later in the day, switch to gelato or the farm shop if needed.

Sweets

Gelato made with local farm produce and Southern Shinshu soft serve

Gelato is a quick way to taste the character of this fruit-growing area. It suits a break with children on a hot day or a small dessert after a meal.

Eat it soon after buying in summer. In autumn 2026, a limited quantity of sorbet made with the Nagano-developed pear 'Tenku no Shizuku' is on sale until sold out.

Lunch

Vegefull Kitchen vegetable buffet

This restaurant builds a changing seasonal menu around vegetables and fruit sourced from local growers. It suits days when you want plenty of vegetables and time to sit with your companions.

Reservation slots, prices and days off can change. Group bookings may alter service, so check the latest restaurant information.

Souvenirs

Jam, juice, pickles, Shinshu miso and kusa-suama

If you cannot take fresh fruit home, jam, juice, pickles and sweets are other ways to bring home a taste of Southern Shinshu. Kusa-suama is a locally sold Japanese sweet. The shelves are fun for everyday shopping as well as gifts.

Seasonal products rotate. Choose what you find while it is available.
