Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Hana no Eki Chikumagawa, a roadside station on National Route 117, brings together Iiyama farm produce, Cafe Sato-wa, a visitor center, and the Montbell Iiyama store. The farm shop sells Snow Carrots, seasonal vegetables, rice, and flowers; the cafe offers Sato-wa curry, breakfast, and Snow Carrot sweets. In spring, explore the nearby Flower Road and Nanohana Park; in rain or winter, visit the center and cafe; and before heading home, continue to Yutaki Onsen. A short stop can become a half day in Iiyama. Guide Chiho Hinata recommends checking the farm shop and sweets first, then choosing the day's flowers and side trips.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

See what's in season in Iiyama at the farm shop

According to the station's official information, vegetables, fruit, rice, flowers, and local specialties from nearby farmers are the farm shop's main attractions. Look for spring asparagus, Snow Carrots that grow sweeter under snow, and autumn apples and rice; the shelves reveal the season in Iiyama.

02

Cafe Sato-wa is a place to eat from the morning

Cafe Sato-wa opens at different times on weekdays and on weekends and public holidays, making it useful for an early stop on those days. Sato-wa curry, lunch, Snow Carrot sweets, and juice make a meal here distinctly local.

03

Plan outdoor time in Iiyama at the visitor center

The visitor center, added in 2023, offers tourist information, e-bikes and rental gear, and a starting point for flower and nature events. After eating and shopping, you can plan your next walk or activity here.

04

The nearby Flower Road comes into its own in spring

The Shinshu Iiyama Tourism Bureau highlights the Flower Road along National Route 117 and rapeseed fields in the Tokiwa district. Make the station your base, then enjoy spring beside the Chikuma River from the car and on a short walk.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short stop to eat and shop

Plan your Iiyama day at the morning farm shop and Cafe Sato-wa

After parking, visit the farm shop first. Snow Carrots, asparagus, rice, apples, and flowers show what's in season and can help you choose the day's side trips. If time allows, have breakfast or curry at Cafe Sato-wa; for a shorter stop, a drink and sweet are satisfying too.

Roadside station → farm shop → Cafe Sato-wa → depart.

Produce and sweets vary with the season, deliveries, and sellouts.

A flower-viewing drive and photo walk

In spring, follow the Flower Road to Nanohana Park

In spring, Hana no Eki Chikumagawa is even more rewarding when you continue beyond the station to the Flower Road along National Route 117 and Nanohana Park. Pick up drinks or snacks at the farm shop, see cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers from the car, then look over the Chikuma River and Sekida Mountains from the park.

Roadside station → Tokiwa district Flower Road → Nanohana Park.

Some rapeseed fields cannot be entered. During flowering, allow for crowds and a possible parking contribution.

Unpredictable weather or a winter drive

On rainy or winter days, focus on indoor food and information

When outdoor walking is difficult, concentrate on the farm shop, Cafe Sato-wa, visitor center, and Montbell Iiyama store. In snow season, check roads and opening hours first. Enjoy a warm meal and ask about the next destination instead of trying to chase flower views.

Shop and eat inside the station → visitor center → Montbell Iiyama store if needed.

Some facilities change closing days and opening times in winter.

A quiet Iiyama outing and a break before heading home

For adults, add the doll museum and hot spring for a half day

After eating and shopping, head into central Iiyama to the Mayumi Takahashi Doll Museum for a deeper sense of the region's rural life. If time allows, finish at Iiyama Yutaki Onsen beside the Chikuma River. This turns a pause on National Route 117 into a half-day outing.

Roadside station → Mayumi Takahashi Doll Museum → Iiyama Yutaki Onsen.

Check the museum's Wednesday closure and winter hours, and the onsen's closing day and last admission separately.

Families with preschoolers or elementary-school children

With children, get ready at the station and choose one outing

The station has a nursing room and diaper-changing room, useful before or after eating and shopping. Choose one additional destination to keep the day manageable: Nanohana Park in spring, a visitor-center event in rain, or the hot spring on the way home.

Restroom and meal at the station → Nanohana Park or a visitor-center activity → head home early.

On event days, parking and movement inside the shops may differ from usual.

Chiho Hinata's side-trip notes

Choose what to eat, then choose where to go in Iiyama

Hana no Eki Chikumagawa is enjoyable when you browse the farm shop shelves and Cafe Sato-wa menu before deciding on a sightseeing stop. A day with Snow Carrots, bright flowers, time for breakfast, or room for the onsen: food and shopping can guide the next walk.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★★☆

A nursing room and diaper-changing room make this useful for a break.

A restroom stop, brief shopping, and a Cafe Sato-wa break may work better than a long stay.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Sweets and a short outdoor walk can provide a change of pace.

Follow field access rules, and hold children's hands beside the road.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Choose among Nanohana Park, a visitor-center activity, and a cafe break.

Picking one goal for the season or weather is less tiring than trying to do everything.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

Extend the outing to the Flower Road, Nanohana Park, or inquiries about e-bikes and nature experiences.

Ask at the visitor center about Iiyama's nature and activities to make the stop more than a rest break.

Nursing and diaper changing

The official facilities guide lists a nursing room and diaper-changing room.

Outdoor play

Nanohana Park or a visitor-center activity suits a longer outing better than staying at the station.

Rainy day

Spend time at the farm shop, Cafe Sato-wa, visitor center, and Montbell Iiyama store.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
After parking, enter the farm shop by a nearby entrance

There is parking for 127 standard cars. On busy days, don't spend too long seeking a spot by the entrance; use the restroom and farm shop for a break first.

  2. 2
Make time to sit at Cafe Sato-wa

If you can avoid the lunch rush, a drink and sweet at the cafe can ease driving fatigue.

  3. 3
Choose outdoor walking by season and footing

Spring flowers are inviting, but ground conditions vary in fields and along the river. On hard-to-walk days, switch to Yutaki Onsen or the doll museum.

Event

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

At weekend lunchtime, keep more than one dining option

Cafe Sato-wa's meals are appealing, but allow for a wait at lunchtime. The farm shop, drinks, sweets, and visitor center give you other ways to enjoy a busy station.

In spring, the station's surroundings become a destination

The tourism bureau calls the stretch of National Route 117 around the station the Flower Road. Rapeseed flowers and cherry blossoms extend the visit beyond the station; stay out of fields and plan for flowering-season parking and crowds.

The visitor center also works for rainy days

The visitor center handles tourist information, rental gear, events, and workshops. When walking outside is difficult, ask about your next destination before setting out.

In winter, check hours and roads first

Farm-shop and visitor-center hours and closing days are expected to change from January through March. In snowy Iiyama, a warm meal, shopping, and an onsen visit may be more satisfying than chasing winter flower views.

Add the hot spring to make a Route 117 break a half-day outing

Iiyama Yutaki Onsen is a day-use hot spring with Chikuma River views. Eat and shop at the station, then stop at the onsen before heading home for a short Iiyama trip.
