Food first

Eat soba, buy rhubarb, unwind in the bath

Shinshu Tsutakijuku becomes more rewarding when you plan what to eat first. Make soba the focus, take a short break with a rhubarb sweet, or choose vegetables from the Yatsugatake foothills at the farm shop. Add Tsuta no Yu at the end, and a Route 20 drive becomes a proper stopover.

Restaurant

Start with handmade soba, then consider set meals, Shinshu salmon, or venison cutlet to suit your companions.

Farm shop

Since the spring 2026 renovation, browse vegetables, sweets, sake, and processed foods in turn.

Hot spring

Make the outdoor bath and sauna your final stop after exploring the Yatsugatake area.

Highlights

On Route 20 as you enter Nagano from Yamanashi, Roadside Station Shinshu Tsutakijuku offers more than a quick break. Its farm shop expanded in spring 2026, making it easier to browse vegetables from the Yatsugatake foothills, Fujimi's red rhubarb, Suwa sake, and local sweets. At Tenohirakan, try handmade soba using locally grown buckwheat or Shinshu game; follow it with rhubarb soft serve, then enjoy the outdoor bath and sauna at Tsuta no Yu if time allows. The short drive from Kobuchizawa IC makes it a useful first stop on a Yatsugatake drive or a final bath on the way home.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Soba, sweets, and a hot spring in one stop

The restaurant's centerpiece is handmade soba made with buckwheat from the Yatsugatake foothills. Choose between marunuki (hulled whole-grain buckwheat) and coarsely ground flour. Follow your meal with rhubarb soft serve or a rhubarb sundae, then head to Tsuta no Yu for an outdoor bath.

02

An expanded farm shop since spring 2026

Renovated in April 2026, the farm shop carries vegetables from Fujimi, Hara, Chino, and Hokuto, along with local sweets, miso, soba, and tastings of sake from nine Suwa breweries. It is easy to choose vegetables for dinner and sweets for the car separately.

03

A Nagano gateway near Kobuchizawa IC

Official directions put the station about 6 minutes from Kobuchizawa IC and about 20 minutes from Suwa Minami IC. It suits a first break entering Nagano from Yamanashi, a bath after Yatsugatake or Fujimi Highland, or a pause on a long Route 20 drive.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

45–70-minute lunch stop

A short Route 20 lunch break

Coming from Kobuchizawa IC, park and use the toilets first, then have handmade soba at Tenohirakan. A quick look at rhubarb sweets and vegetables in the farm shop adds a taste of Fujimi even to a brief stop.

Parking → toilets → Tenohirakan restaurant → farm shop → departure

Check the official calendar for Tuesday and temporary closures and the restaurant's last-order time.

On the way back from a Yatsugatake drive

A half-day detour with a hot-spring set

Lunch, the farm shop, and Tsuta no Yu can fill much of a half-day at the station. Outdoor and spring-source baths, a sauna, and a rest area make it a convenient stop after hiking or highland activities.

Meal → farm shop → Tsuta no Yu → tatami rest → sweet or drink

Local bathers and returning drivers may converge in the evening. Adjust the order of shopping, resting, and bathing if needed.

A short cultural outing for adults

Connect the post town with Jomon history

The station name recalls the 43rd post town on the old Koshu Kaido route. Add nearby Idojiri Archaeological Museum to encounter a much older layer of Fujimi's history. It suits a day when food and bathing alone are not enough.

Shinshu Tsutakijuku → Idojiri Archaeological Museum → souvenirs at the farm shop

Idojiri Archaeological Museum is generally closed Mondays and the day after a public holiday. Its closures differ from the station's, so check both.

A fine day from summer to autumn

Extend the drive to highland flowers and clear water

When Fujimi Kogen's Flower Village or Ojiragawa Gorge is the main destination, use the station as a base for food and bathing. Walk among flowers or by the gorge in the morning, then return for soba and Tsuta no Yu at lunch or in the evening.

Fujimi Kogen or Ojiragawa Gorge → meal and bath at Shinshu Tsutakijuku

Highland facilities and the gorge change with the season, severe weather, and trail conditions. In winter or rain, focus on the station rather than forcing an outdoor walk.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or under
★★★☆☆

Toilets, meals, and brief shopping are convenient; using the hot spring depends on the family's routine.

Bathing is advertised as free for preschoolers. Before a meal or bath, locate a suitable place on site for feeding, diaper changes, and rest rather than planning a long soak.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Rhubarb soft serve and the farm shop offer a quick change of pace.

The station suits short meals and sweets rather than play equipment. Watch for vehicles by the riverside and parking area, and choose carefully where children can walk.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Treat soba, soft serve, and a bath as small separate goals to keep the visit engaging.

If the meal wait is long, browse the farm shop first or save the bath for later.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Add Idojiri Archaeological Museum or Fujimi Kogen for learning and outdoor play.

If the bath alone feels too brief, Jomon exhibits, Flower Village, or Ojiragawa's clear stream can give the day a fuller purpose.

Hot spring

There are outdoor and spring-source baths, a Jacuzzi, and sauna. Mixed-gender bathing is permitted only through preschool age, according to the station's guidance.

Food

Set meals, udon, ramen, and fried rice offer options for children's tastes.

Outdoor play

Instead of planning a long play session at the station, head to Fujimi Kogen or Ojiragawa on a fine day, or Idojiri for culture.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Park and use the toilets first

Parking and toilets are available at all times. On a long drive, pause and get comfortable before eating or shopping.

  2. 2
Choose soba or a set meal at a comfortable pace

Besides handmade soba, there are set meals, udon, and ramen. Choose according to how you feel and what your companions want.

  3. 3
Rest on the tatami after bathing

Tsuta no Yu has a rest area. A drink and a pause before driving on can make the return easier.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Soba Day on the 18th of each month

A recurring food event advertised on the official homepage. If visiting for handmade soba, check restaurant opening and likely crowds.

Bath Day on the 26th of each month

In principle, Tsuta no Yu offers its six-ticket booklet at a special thank-you price on the 26th of each month. The regular booklet price is ¥4,000; the special price is not stated here. The event date may shift when the 26th is a closure day (to the 27th in May 2026); check the annual calendar.

High-temperature and low-temperature sauna days

Days of the month containing 3 or 7 are high-temperature sauna days. Check the event calendar for low-temperature sauna days if the sauna is your reason to visit.

Soba-making class

A monthly class starting at 14:00 and lasting about 1.5–2 hours. It costs ¥2,600 per session including tax and insurance, and is for individuals of junior high school age or older. Check the monthly official event calendar for dates; register with station staff or by phone.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Leave flexibility for food, bathing, and shopping at holiday lunchtime

Reviews suggest that weekends and holidays can be busy along Route 20, while visits range from a quick break to a longer stay with a bath. If the restaurant is busy, change the order of the farm shop, sweets, and bath.

Remember the soba and rhubarb

The restaurant has soba, set meals, Shinshu salmon, and venison cutlet, but for a first visit, handmade soba and a red-rhubarb sweet are especially characteristic. Even on a shopping-only visit, rhubarb products offer a taste of Fujimi.

Finish the day with a bath

Tsuta no Yu has outdoor and spring-source baths, a sauna, and rest area, making it a good stop after Flower Village, Ojiragawa, or the Yatsugatake area. Last admission is generally 20:30, so decide the order of dinner and bathing in advance.

Browse the expanded farm shop's changing stock

The spring 2026 renovation expanded space for Yatsugatake foothill vegetables, regional sweets, miso, soba, and sake from nine Suwa breweries. The selection of morning-harvested vegetables changes by time of day; later visitors can also consider processed foods or sweets.

A rainy day can still work within the station

With a hot spring, restaurant, farm shop, and information station, there is plenty for a break even when outdoor walking is difficult. On fine days, add Idojiri or Fujimi Kogen; on rainy days, focus on soba, shopping, and a bath.

A different role on each side of the prefectural border

From Yamanashi, it is a first break around the entry into Nagano; from the Suwa side, it suits a bath and shopping on the return. Its proximity to Kobuchizawa IC also makes it easy to add before or after the Chuo Expressway.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Tuesdays are the usual closure day (or the next day if Tuesday is a public holiday), but some months have additional closures, and Tenohirakan and Tsuta no Yu may close on different days. Use the official annual calendar for opening dates.
  • The hot spring opens 10:00–21:00, with last admission at 20:30. The restaurant opens 11:00–20:00, with last orders at 19:30. On December 31, both the shop and hot spring close at 14:00.
  • If using both the restaurant and hot spring, check the reception instructions before choosing which to visit first.
  • The farm shop's fresh produce selection changes through the day. A cooler bag is useful if the journey home is long.
  • Sake tasting is for passengers who are not driving; drivers can choose a bottle to take home.
  • In winter or severe weather, keep the visit to station dining, shopping, and bathing rather than adding a highland or gorge walk.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Make lunch the main event

Yatsugatake marunuki soba, coarsely ground soba, Tsutakijuku set meal

Head to Tenohirakan first. Choose cold soba to compare its aroma, or warm kake soba or a set meal if you want something warming.

The restaurant generally opens 11:00–20:00, with last orders at 19:30. On holiday lunchtimes, diners seeking meal-and-bath sets may add to the crowd; leave room to visit the farm shop or get a sweet instead.

Pair food with a bath

Selected menu items and Tsuta no Yu

A meal-and-hot-spring set is advertised. Combine lunch, shopping, and a break in the tatami rest area for a half-day visit, rather than coming only for a bath.

Set contents and the order of use may change. Check ticket and reception instructions on the day.

Take a short sweet break

Hopeochi soft serve, rhubarb soft serve, rhubarb sundae

Even without a restaurant meal, you can quickly taste the tart red rhubarb associated with Fujimi. It is an easy change of pace with children, too.

Shop for dinner

Yatsugatake foothill vegetables, miso, Shinshu soba, preserved foods

The renovated farm shop makes vegetables and regional products easier to browse. If the trip home is long, consider more processed foods or sweets rather than leafy vegetables.

Choose gifts for adults

Sake from nine Suwa breweries, local sweets

Passengers who are not driving can use the self-service tasting to compare breweries. Drivers can choose bottles to take home.
