How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Decide first
Lunch at Hasumi or the market first

Around lunchtime, checking the restaurant first helps you gauge the wait. For shopping, morning to early afternoon is easier.

Take home
Seawater-grown green onions, Sammu strawberries and processed seafood

Alongside vegetables, Kujukuri take-home options include sesame-marinated sardines, namero, nagarami sea snails and dried fish.

With children
A short station visit or add the seaside park

The station suits meals and shopping. Save active play for Hasunuma Seaside Park or Tonoshita Beach.

Rainy day
Meal, market and community center

Skip outdoor play and keep the visit short, checking what is on at Hasumi, Kitaiyo and the adjacent Hasunuma Community Center.

Summer stop
Before or after the pool or beach

On days Hasunuma Water Garden or the beach is open, allow time for toilets, a sweet treat and souvenirs on the way back.

Riho Tachibana’s detour notes

Separate eating, shopping and outdoor play instead of expecting everything at the station.

Riho Tachibana sees this station as a way to organize a family drive. Use its toilets, have lunch at Hasumi and shop at Kitaiyo; then move to Hasunuma Seaside Park when children want to be active. On rainy or intensely hot days, keep the visit to a meal and shopping. That flexibility makes Orai Hasunuma a useful stop along Kujukuri.

Eat

Check Hasumi first at lunchtime, then decide between iwashi-don, namero and children’s dishes.

Shop

At Kitaiyo, choose vegetables, seawater-grown green onions, Sammu strawberries and processed seafood to eat at home.

Play outside

Rather than staying long at the station, head to Hasunuma Seaside Park or Tonoshita Beach on a fine day.

Highlights

Orai Hasunuma stands on Haniwa Road between Narita Airport and the Kujukuri Coast, combining a meal, a farm shop and a toilet stop. At Kitaiyo market you can find Sammu vegetables, seawater-grown green onions, strawberry products, sesame-marinated sardines and namero (chopped, seasoned fish). Restaurant Hasumi serves iwashi-don (a sardine rice bowl), a namero set meal and nabura-don. There is no large play structure at the station, but Hasunuma Seaside Park is a few minutes away by car. In summer, add Hasunuma Water Garden or Tonoshita Beach; farther afield, visit the Narutō–Tōgane Carnivorous Plant Community. Together they make an easy half-day drive with children.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Make Kujukuri seafood the centerpiece of lunch

Restaurant Hasumi serves iwashi-don (sardine rice bowl), a namero set meal (chopped, seasoned fish), nabura-don and a sardine tempura set meal: choices that suit a trip to the coast. There are also curry and lunch options for children, so adults wanting fish and children wanting something else can eat together.

02

A farm shop with the flavors of Sammu

Kitaiyo market brings together produce and processed seafood: seawater-grown green onions, Sammu strawberries, peanuts, local pickles, thick rolled sushi, sesame-marinated sardines and horse mackerel namero (chopped, seasoned fish). Even without a restaurant meal, there is plenty to take home.

03

Easy to pair with the seaside park and beach

The station is best used for a break and a meal before heading to Hasunuma Seaside Park, its Children’s Plaza, Hasunuma Water Garden or, in summer, Tonoshita Beach. Keep the visit centered on the station on rainy or excessively hot days, and add outdoor play when the weather is fine.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive for fish dishes

Make lunch the focus and taste Kujukuri

At Restaurant Hasumi, choose from iwashi-don, a namero set meal and a sardine tempura set meal. If a family member does not like fish, curry, soba, udon and children’s dishes offer other options.

Park → check the wait at Hasumi → eat → browse processed seafood and strawberry products at the market.

The restaurant’s lunch service is relatively short. Allow for its Monday closure and possible sellouts; arrive early if lunch is your main aim.

A half day with children

Shop at the market, then play at the seaside park

Browse vegetables and souvenirs at Kitaiyo market before moving to the Children’s Plaza and observation tower at Hasunuma Seaside Park. The family day works better when you separate eating and shopping at the station from outdoor play, since the station has no large play equipment.

Station → market → toilets → Hasunuma Seaside Park → a sweet treat on the way back.

On summer pool and beach days, road and parking conditions can be hard to predict. Plan changing clothes and dealing with sand at the park or beach.

A day when the weather turns

Keep a rainy-day visit short at the station and next door

Instead of pursuing outdoor play, eat at Hasumi, shop at Kitaiyo and check announcements at the adjacent Hasunuma Community Center. A short visit keeps the car close for families with small children.

Park → toilets → meal or shopping → check community center events → depart.

The community center is listed as closed Mondays. Check ahead for room bookings, exhibitions or the RV park, depending on your purpose.

The return trip from Hasunuma Water Garden or Tonoshita Beach

Rest after a summer beach or pool visit

After water play, make a short stop for the 24-hour toilets, a sweet treat, drinks and souvenirs. Instead of keeping tired children out for long, finish with Sammu strawberry gelato or something to take home.

Seaside park or beach → Orai Hasunuma → sweets and souvenirs → home.

Summer crowds vary with events, stalls and beach opening days. Check the official blog and Sammu City beach information.

A Sammu detour beyond the coast

Add nature observation with elementary-school children

After eating and shopping, visit the Narutō–Tōgane Carnivorous Plant Community for a different side of Sammu. It is better suited to brief observation on an open day in the right season than to play with very young children.

Station → Hasumi or Kitaiyo → toilets → Narutō–Tōgane Carnivorous Plant Community.

Opening days differ between April–August and September–October, and toilet and parking capacity is limited. Check the official advance-booking guidance for groups or guided visits.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best as a short shopping and 24-hour toilet stop rather than for nursing or a long stay.

For this age, a quick circuit of parking, toilets and the market before returning to the car is more practical than seeking outdoor play equipment.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Meals and sweets are convenient, but there is limited space for active play at the station itself.

If children may get restless, plan to move on to the Children’s Plaza at Hasunuma Seaside Park.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Combine the restaurant, gelato, market and seaside park for a satisfying outing.

In summer, pair the visit with the pool or beach; on rainy days, switch to the station and community center.

Elementary-school age
★★★★☆

Kujukuri fish, processed seafood, the park’s views and play equipment give children plenty to talk about.

For a trip extending to the beach or carnivorous plant community, decide on travel time, spare clothes and heat protection first.

Play area

The station mainly offers food and shopping. Go to Hasunuma Seaside Park or Tonoshita Beach for outdoor play.

Toilets

A convenient stop during a long Kujukuri drive.

Meals

Hasumi is listed as open approximately 11:00–15:00 and has children’s menu items.

Rainy day

Focus on shopping, a meal and checking events at the adjacent Hasunuma Community Center.

Event

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Weekend and holiday events

On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, monthly listings include tent sales of sardine and vegetable tempura, freshly roasted coffee, Thai food, Indian food (kebabs and curry), seasoned gyoza, yakitori and fried foods. Events may be canceled or changed because of rain or vendors’ circumstances.

Gosho Shrine Summer Festival

The shrine’s portable mikoshi is listed as stopping at the roadside station on the first Sunday of August each year. Check the monthly event listings before a summer visit.

Harvest Festival and New Rice Fair

The September Harvest Festival and New Rice Fair lists Chiba-grown rice varieties Koshihikari, Fusaotome, Fusakogane and Tsubusuke, along with pears, chestnuts and vegetables. In 2026, tasting sales of rice balls made with the new crop took place on September 5 and 6. Check each year’s monthly event listing for dates.

Hasunuma Community Center

The adjacent facility updates information on exhibitions, classes and its RV park. Check it when planning a rainy-day visit or a drive involving an overnight stay.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Check the queue at Hasumi around the lunch rush

Travel accounts and restaurant reviews often describe arriving around lunchtime for iwashi-don. On arrival, check the restaurant queue first; if there is a wait, moving to the market or outdoor stall can make the family visit smoother.

The market offers more choice from morning to early afternoon

Vegetables, fruit, thick rolled sushi and processed seafood vary with deliveries and sellouts. If shopping is your main aim, look at the stalls first rather than leaving them until after the park or beach.

Plan children’s active play beyond the station

You can take a photo or make a short stop here, but Hasunuma Seaside Park is the main choice for energetic play. Treating the station as a base for meals, shopping and toilets helps set family expectations.

Weekends can bring small food events

Official event listings describe weekend stalls selling kebabs, Thai food, freshly roasted coffee, yakitori, fried foods and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes). When Hasumi is busy, you may also find something to eat outside.

Summer crowds change around beach and pool visits

Breaks become more popular during the Hasunuma Water Garden and Tonoshita Beach seasons. Keep pre-swim shopping short; on the way home, prioritize the toilets and a sweet treat according to how tired everyone is.

Check opening days and toilets before nature observation

The Narutō–Tōgane Carnivorous Plant Community has carnivorous and wetland plants, but its opening days vary by season and facilities are more limited than at a large attraction. For a brief visit with elementary-school children or older, use the toilet and get drinks at Orai Hasunuma before setting out.

Keep rainy days to the restaurant and market

When you skip the seaside park and beach, make a short stop at Hasumi and Kitaiyo and check what is on at the adjacent community center. Dropping outdoor plans makes a family drive easier to adjust.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Restaurant Hasumi is listed as open approximately 11:00–15:00 and closed Mondays. Do not arrive too late if lunch is your purpose.
  • Produce and thick rolled sushi at Kitaiyo market depend on deliveries and can sell out; shop first if that is your priority.
  • There is no large play equipment at the station. Save outdoor play for Hasunuma Seaside Park or Tonoshita Beach.
  • Summer crowds vary with Hasunuma Water Garden, beach openings and weekend events. Check the official blog and Sammu City beach information before traveling.
  • On rainy days, focus on food, market shopping and Hasunuma Community Center instead of adding the beach or park.
  • Bring a cooler if buying processed seafood, especially for a longer return journey.
  • Before visiting the Narutō–Tōgane Carnivorous Plant Community, check opening days, group booking rules and limited on-site toilets.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Restaurant Hasumi
    Iwashi-don (sardine rice bowl)
No. 1 in popularity on the official menu: sardine tempura in a sweet and savory sauce over rice.
  • Kujukuri regional dish
    Namero set meal
A good choice for a substantial meal of local fish; namero is chopped, seasoned fish.
  • Local rice bowl
    Hasumi nabura-don
A rice bowl with marinated tuna and salmon roe. Check the day’s notice for quantities and availability.
  • Sweets and outdoor stall
    Sammu strawberry gelato
A sweet stop at the outdoor stall or after a meal, convenient for a break with children.
  • Kitaiyo market
Seawater-grown green onions, strawberry products and processed seafood

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Lunch

Iwashi-don, namero set meal, sardine tempura set meal

Make Hasumi the main stop if you want to taste Kujukuri at lunch.

Lunch hours are approximately 11:00–15:00. Allow for Monday closure and a wait when busy.

Options for the family

A set meal, soba, udon, children’s curry

Children and companions who do not like fish can choose other dishes in the same restaurant.

Menus and prices can change; follow the notices posted that day.

Sweet break

Sammu strawberry gelato, soft-serve ice cream, taiyaki (fish-shaped filled cake)

Good for a short break after the seaside park or when a full meal is too much.

The outdoor stall is listed as opening at 9:00 and closing Mondays (Tuesdays if Monday is a public holiday). It sells soft-serve ice cream and strawberry gelato.

Take home

Seawater-grown green onions, strawberry products, thick rolled sushi, pickles

Choose Sammu produce and something to eat at home.

Produce deliveries and sellouts vary. Visit earlier rather than very late if shopping is your aim.

Kujukuri souvenirs

Sesame-marinated sardines, horse mackerel namero, nagarami sea snails, dried fish

Look at chilled and frozen processed seafood for a taste of the coast to take home.

A cooler gives you more options if your journey home is long.
