How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First thing on arrival
Toilets and road information

Directly across from Yufuin Interchange, this is a good place to check traffic, weather and possible parking before driving into town.

For something to take home
Souvenirs, vegetables and processed foods at the temporary shop

Sales are the focus during rebuilding. Stock varies by day, so visit earlier if you have a particular item in mind.

For a meal
A light bite here, a fuller meal in town

A dining area appears in the usual station information, but temporary operations were in place as of July 2026. Planning to eat around Yunotsubo Kaido or Yufuin Station is more realistic.

With children
Best for a short break

The nursing room was announced as reopening in March 2026, with hours of 8:30–16:00. Use the stop to get everyone settled rather than for extended play.

In clear weather
Mount Yufu and Sagiridai

If visibility is good, continue beyond the view from the station toward the viewpoints along Prefectural Route 11.

On a rainy day
Plan a town walk at YUFUiNFO

At the tourist information center beside Yufuin Station, you can ask about luggage and walking around town.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Yufuin is a place to pause before entering Yufuin rather than a sightseeing destination in itself. Easy to park at directly across from Yufuin Interchange, it lets you take in the view of Mount Yufu while making a quick stop for toilets, road information, sightseeing brochures, local souvenirs and farm produce. As of July 2026, the site was being rebuilt and its temporary shop mainly sold goods. Use the stop to decide how to continue to Yunotsubo Kaido, Lake Kinrin or Sagiridai rather than planning to have a full meal here.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Get oriented as soon as you leave Yufuin Interchange

You can park just after leaving the expressway and check the toilets, road conditions, sightseeing brochures and your destinations for the day. A pause here before heading straight to Yunotsubo Kaido can make the search for town parking and decisions about meal times a little easier.

02

Choose a few things to buy with Mount Yufu in view

During rebuilding, the temporary shop mainly sells souvenirs, vegetables from local growers and processed foods. This is not a stop for a long stay, but it works well for picking up something from Yufuin, buying a snack for the car and choosing your next destination.

03

Continue from here into Yufuin

This is a useful starting point for deciding how to visit Yunotsubo Kaido, Lake Kinrin, Sagiridai and the Mount Yufu area, rather than making the dining room or indoor stay your main goal. Stop in the morning before entering town, or take a final break before joining the expressway on your way home.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

First-time visitors arriving via Yufuin Interchange

Plan your toilet and parking stops before entering town

Just after leaving Yufuin Interchange, you can stop for the toilets, road information and sightseeing brochures before entering town. Walking around Yunotsubo Kaido is enjoyable, but finding parking on holidays can be tiring. Spending your first five minutes here can help.

Yufuin Interchange → Michi-no-Eki Yufuin → Yufuin Station area or Yunotsubo Kaido.

During temporary operations, it helps to have a meal option in town instead of relying on a full meal here.

Drivers returning toward Beppu, Oita or Fukuoka

Make one last shopping stop before the expressway

The location by the interchange is useful if you remember something you forgot to buy in town. Browse local growers' vegetables, processed foods and souvenirs, use the toilets, then return to the expressway.

Yufuin sightseeing → Michi-no-Eki Yufuin → Yufuin Interchange.

Popular items may run low in the afternoon. Earlier hours give you a better choice if shopping is your aim.

Days when you want to add scenery to a drive

On a clear day, finish with the view from Sagiridai

If the sight of Mount Yufu from the station inspires you, continue to Sagiridai for a view over the Yufuin Basin. Autumn and winter morning mist, green mountains in spring and summer, and winter snow give the same road a different feel each season.

Michi-no-Eki Yufuin → Prefectural Route 11 → Sagiridai.

The mountain road has many bends and can be difficult in fog or icy conditions. Skip the viewpoint when weather is poor.

Visitors who want to walk Yunotsubo Kaido and Lake Kinrin

Start your walk from the Yufuin Station side

For a walk, move your car toward town and explore Yunotsubo Kaido and Lake Kinrin instead of walking around the roadside station. Use the station to decide on your route before setting off on foot.

Michi-no-Eki Yufuin → parking near Yufuin Station → Yunotsubo Kaido → Lake Kinrin.

Opening hours and regular closing days differ by shop along Yunotsubo Kaido, and it can be crowded. Allow extra time.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★☆☆

A nursing room and diaper changing station are listed, making this a useful stop to settle in during a journey.

Nursing room hours are listed as 8:30–16:00. This is better for a brief break than a long play stop.

Ages 2–3
★★☆☆☆

This is not a station centered on play equipment or open space; a toilet break and a little shopping are a manageable plan.

If children need to walk, a stroll around Lake Kinrin or in town may be more enjoyable.

Ages 4–6
★★★☆☆

Enjoy the view of Mount Yufu and choose souvenirs together. A shorter stay is best.

On rainy or hot days, focus on a break in the car and the toilets.

Elementary school age
★★★☆☆

A good place to check a map before heading to Mount Yufu, Yamanami Highway or Lake Kinrin.

Check the weather and clothing before mountain roads or viewpoints.

Nursing room

The official notice says it reopened on March 14, 2026, with hours of 8:30–16:00.

Multipurpose toilet

Tourism Oita lists an ostomate facility and a diaper changing station.

Long stays

Retail is the focus during rebuilding. For a place where children can play, continue into town or to a nature spot.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Keep it to a break before or after the expressway

Right by Yufuin Interchange, it works both before entering town and before leaving. Sit down before a longer walk, use the toilets and check your route.

  2. 2
Check what is open during rebuilding

The temporary shop has different weekday and weekend or holiday hours. Think of it as a place to shop and check information, and make separate meal plans.

  3. 3
Let the weather decide on Mount Yufu

Clear views can be rewarding, while mountain roads in fog or rain are tiring. In poor weather, the Yufuin Station area or YUFUiNFO is an easier option.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

The station's official website and YUFUiNFO offer routes into event and sightseeing information for the Yufuin area.

Temporary shop

Retail is the focus during rebuilding. Use it for shopping and a break before or after an event rather than as a place to stay for an event.

Yufuin Rack Hall area

The station can be a rest stop before heading to town venues for events such as the film and music festivals.

Mount Yufu and Sagiridai area

Use the station as a starting point for nearby scenery that changes with the seasons, including the mountain opening season and autumn or winter morning mist.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

For now, make the most of temporary operations

Rebuilding notices continued through 2025 and 2026. As of July 2026, the temporary shop mainly sold goods. A visit focused on shopping, toilets, tourist information and road conditions is more reliable than expecting a full meal or long indoor stay.

Popular items may be gone by afternoon on weekends and holidays

Travel sites and visitor accounts mention souvenirs and foods selling out. For items affected by day of the week or limited quantities, such as Komatsuya ohagi (sweet rice cakes coated in bean paste), check on a morning stop rather than waiting until the return trip.

The location by Yufuin Interchange helps on busy days too

Traffic converges here from the expressway, Yamanami Highway and Yufuin town, so holidays can be busy. Yet you can regroup before entering town: use the toilets and decide where to go before driving to a town parking lot.

With children, use it as a place to regroup

The multipurpose toilet and nursing room are useful, but rebuilding makes this a poor choice for extended play. With infants, check nursing room hours, use the toilets and pick up a light snack for the car; save walking time for Lake Kinrin or town.

Weather makes a big difference at Mount Yufu and Sagiridai

On a clear day, the Mount Yufu view adds to the stop. Autumn and winter mist, winter snow and rainy mountain roads call for a different driving plan. Leave room to choose a town walk or YUFUiNFO instead of insisting on a viewpoint.

For town events, separate the station stop from the venue visit

The Yufuin Film Festival and Yufuin Music Festival center on venues by Yufuin Station, not the roadside station. If driving, use the station for a break before or after the expressway and allow separate time around the venue for the event itself.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • As of July 18, 2026, official information said rebuilding was under way, the former shop was being demolished, and a temporary shop beside the disaster preparedness storehouse on the grounds was mainly selling goods.
  • The official notice lists temporary shop hours of 10:00–16:00 on weekdays and 9:00–17:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Keep these separate from the roadside station's reception hours of 9:00–17:00.
  • Tourism Oita lists parking for 14 large vehicles, 107 cars, three vehicles using accessible spaces and 10 motorcycles. The station is one minute by car from Yufuin Interchange; watch for vehicles entering and leaving on holidays.
  • The official notice says the nursing room reopened on March 14, 2026, with hours of 8:30–16:00. Check the time ahead if travelling with an infant.
  • Tourist information lists a multipurpose toilet, ostomate facilities and a diaper changing station. Official notices sometimes report brief toilet closures for construction or electrical work, so check for an update on the day.
  • Local information says there are no rubbish bins on the grounds. If you buy something to eat in the car, bring a bag to take the waste away.
  • Weather changes both the view and driving conditions toward Mount Yufu, Sagiridai and Yamanami Highway. Allow extra time in fog, rain or winter road conditions.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Shop briefly

Souvenirs, vegetables and processed foods from the temporary shop

During rebuilding, a quick shop is the main draw rather than a long stay. Browse vegetables and processed foods from local producers and put together a bag to take home from Yufuin.

Stock and quantities vary daily. Come earlier in the day for items you do not want to miss.

Eat a light snack

Information about snacks such as shiitake tempura

The usual listings mention tempura made with Oita-grown log-cultivated shiitake mushrooms and a dining area. Availability may change during rebuilding, so check on site and eat in town if necessary.

As of July 2026, the temporary shop focused on retail. Do not plan your visit around the dining area alone.

Eat in town

Yunotsubo Kaido and the Yufuin Station area

Eating in town gives you more choices. Gather information at the roadside station, then plan lunch, sweets and souvenir shopping in Yufuin.

Holiday lunchtimes can be crowded; an early lunch or a separate sweets stop may make the day easier.

Get ready for the return trip

Toilets, souvenirs and a break before the expressway

Before heading home, the practical stops matter: use the toilets, pick up anything you forgot and check road conditions before returning to Yufuin Interchange.

Closing time approaches in the evening, so leave enough time to shop.
