Highlights

Centered on Utazu Umi Hotaru, this roadside station brings together lawns, play equipment, a restored salt field and a seafront promenade. Stretch your legs by the Seto Inland Sea with views of the Seto Ohashi Bridge, take a café break, and bring home Utazu salt or ancient rice. Shikoku Aquarium is next door, while Gold Tower and a bathing facility are within walking distance, so a quick toilet stop can easily become a half day by the sea and at sunset.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A seaside roadside stop offers a different kind of break

A break here extends beyond the building to the Seto Inland Sea, lawns, promenade and views of the Seto Ohashi Bridge. It is a handy place to walk off the stiffness of driving, let children use the play equipment or catch the evening breeze.

02

Utazu's character comes through in salt and ancient rice

The local products are less like those of a large farm market and more rooted in the town's history: salt made by the irihama method, salt candy, salt caramels, ancient rice and Sanuki udon made with ancient rice. It is a quieter kind of shopping, choosing what to take home from this seaside town. The irihama method uses a coastal salt field to concentrate seawater before boiling it down.

03

Nearby attractions make it easy to stay longer

Shikoku Aquarium is in the same seaside park, and Gold Tower and Shikoku Kenko Mura bathhouse are within walking distance. Come just for the station, take a break before or after the aquarium, wait for sunset, or finish a half day with a bath. Remember that part of the car park closes overnight.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Families and couples visiting Shikoku Aquarium

A 30-minute break around an aquarium visit

A toilet stop, drink and seaside stroll before or after Shikoku Aquarium can soften the pace of the day. On busy aquarium days, children can walk a little before entry or unwind on the lawn afterward.

The station and Shikoku Aquarium are in the same seaside park, within walking distance.

Aquarium visitors are generally directed to nearby paid parking. The roadside station car park is for station users.

Adults, photography days and dates

Take a short walk while waiting for sunset

The Lovers' Sanctuary appeal comes through most strongly in the sea and evening light. A walk along the shore as the sun lowers offers memorable views of the Seto Ohashi Bridge and Shiwaku Islands.

Utazu Umi Hotaru → seafront promenade → lawn.

If staying for the night view, check the partial car park closure and nearby parking options.

Families with preschoolers and elementary school children

Let children play while adults enjoy the café and shops

The play area caters to a broad range of ages and has a covered rest area. Adults can browse local products or visit the café while children enjoy the equipment and lawn. With smaller children, find the toilet and rest area first.

Car park → toilets → play area and lawn → Utazu Umi Hotaru.

This is the seafront: account for summer sun and wind, and winter chill, with regular indoor breaks.

Families with children in fourth grade or above, and visitors interested in local history

Learn a little about Utazu salt

At the restored salt field, you can experience how salt production shaped Utazu. This is a reserved activity, best planned as a purpose of the trip rather than a spontaneous stop. Follow it with salt souvenirs to take a piece of the town's history home.

Restored salt field and boiling hut → Utazu Umi Hotaru exhibits → local products shop.

Check the current age, group size and booking deadline before planning the experience.

On the way back from Seto Ohashi, or whenever you want to wash off the day's heat

Finish an evening drive with a bath

After a seaside walk, nearby Shikoku Kenko Mura makes an easy final stop. It also fits after Shikoku Aquarium or Gold Tower. Follow each destination's parking guidance instead of leaving your car at the roadside station for a long time.

Roadside station → Shikoku Kenko Mura; a short distance on foot or by car.

Shikoku Kenko Mura is advertised as open 24 hours, but check its own guidance for bathing hours and closure days.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★☆☆

There is a covered rest area and a toilet with a baby changing mat, but seaside wind and sun can be strong.

Keep the visit short and first locate the toilets, a place to feed your baby and somewhere cool.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Play equipment and lawn make it easy to move around between car journeys.

The promenade is near the water, so hold hands here.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Play equipment, lawn and a walk around an aquarium visit work well even for a short stay.

In summer, keep outdoor play short and take breaks at the café or indoors.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Pair Shikoku Aquarium, Gold Tower and the salt-making experience for half a day of play and learning.

The salt-making experience is listed for children in fourth grade or above.

Toilets

The guide lists two in the park and one inside Utazu Umi Hotaru, including the Octopus Toilet and child-friendly facilities.

Rest areas

A covered rest area is listed near the play area. On hot days, include a café or indoor break.

Strollers

Keep seaside walks short and allow for wind over the lawn. Leave extra space to move on busy or event days.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Check the overnight parking closure first

The 54-space car park is convenient, but part closes from 22:00 to 7:00 on weekends, public holidays and days before public holidays. If staying for sunset or night views, plan your departure time.

  2. 2
Find the toilets and rest area first

Toilets are available in the park and Utazu Umi Hotaru, with a covered rest area near the play area. On windy days, note the route back indoors.

  3. 3
Keep another meal option in mind

Umi to Sora Café is appealing, but its published hours differ. If a meal matters, keep nearby facilities or the Utazu Station area as alternatives.

  4. 4
    Use each destination's parking guidance

Shikoku Aquarium, Gold Tower and Shikoku Kenko Mura each provide parking information. Follow it rather than leaving a car at the roadside station for a long time.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Lawn

An open space by the sea that suits events; on ordinary days it is also good for children's breaks and waiting for sunset.

Stage

Music and dance events such as Aloha Night give the station a different atmosphere and a reason to stay into the evening.

Hall inside Utazu Umi Hotaru

An indoor space that may be useful for events on rainy or hot days; check the event details.

Restored salt field

More a center for booked experiences and learning than a general event space. Add it to a visit when you want to understand the town in depth.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Plan the salt-making experience ahead

The restored salt field brings the town's salt history into focus. Participation requires a reservation and has an age requirement, so make it a planned learning stop rather than a same-day impulse.

On event days, leave room for parking and meals

An evening event such as Aloha Night turns the station into a destination. Official notices may direct visitors to paid parking near the venue, so plan differently from an ordinary short break.

A light meal and salt or ancient rice shopping suit this station

This is not a large food market. A sea-view café and Utazu souvenirs fit it better than a plan built around street food or a large produce market. For a substantial meal, consider nearby facilities too.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Utazu Umi Hotaru is listed as open 9:00–21:00 and closed Mondays (or the following day when Monday is a public holiday) and December 28–January 3. Utazu Town tourism information says the park remains usable during these closures.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Pause with a view of the sea

Umi to Sora Café

The pleasure here is sitting by the sea with a drink or light meal, rather than planning a large meal. It fits before or after the aquarium or a walk.

Published café hours differ. Check current facility guidance if you plan to eat.

Buy something distinctive to Utazu

Irihama-method salt / lemon salt / salt ponzu / irihama nigari

Choose small souvenirs that reflect this salt-producing town, rather than expecting a large farm market piled with vegetables. They also make useful gifts for cooks. Nigari is the mineral-rich liquid left after salt crystals form; ponzu is a citrus-seasoned sauce.

The selection changes with the season and deliveries.

Choose a sweet souvenir

Utazu salt candy / Utazu salt caramels

Easy to share in the car and to buy even on a short stop. Salt sweets after a seaside walk can recall your time here.

Stocks of popular products change, so shop earlier if you have a particular item in mind.

Take a staple home

Sanuki ancient rice / ancient-rice Sanuki udon

These are for anyone who wants to try a taste of Utazu at home, beyond a conventional tourist souvenir. Sanuki udon is the thick wheat noodle associated with Kagawa.

Leave heavy purchases until after the aquarium or your walk.

Allow another option for a meal nearby

Food around Shikoku Aquarium, Gold Tower and Shikoku Kenko Mura

Instead of depending solely on the station café, plan a meal around the hours of nearby attractions. For a half-day visit, having one extra dining option makes the day easier.

Nearby places may be busy on event days and during summer holidays, so allow flexibility in meal times.
