Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Kamogawa Enjo is a roadside station on National Route 429 in Kibichuo Town, Okayama Prefecture, with a strong farm produce shop. From autumn into winter, large, sweet Enjo Chinese cabbages take center stage. At the restaurant, look for kimchi udon, rice balls made with local rice, and kusagi-na kake-meshi, a local rice dish topped with seasoned greens. Next door, Shinanoya resumed business in January 2025 and serves set meals made with local ingredients. From around May, you can watch for dollarbirds; the Enjo Asaichi morning market runs from spring into autumn. Add Ugakei Gorge's autumn leaves or Komori Onsen for a half-day drive through the Kibi Highlands. Guide Keiko Arima recommends it as a place where simply shopping for ingredients reveals the town's seasons.

Reasons to stop here

01

A stop for Enjo Chinese cabbage in autumn and winter

The Kibichuo Town Tourism Association says its specialty Enjo Chinese cabbages fill the shelves from autumn into winter. Large and particularly sweet, they are the star of the farm produce shop.

02

Taste the area in kimchi udon and kusagi greens over rice

The town introduces the restaurant's kimchi udon, rice balls made with locally grown rice, and limited portions of kusagi-na kake-meshi, a local dish of rice topped with seasoned kusagi greens. Even a short lunch stop can become a taste of Kibichuo Town.

03

Shinanoya has reopened, adding another lunch option

Adjacent Shinanoya reopened on January 30, 2025, serving gozen set meals made with locally sourced ingredients. Choose among udon, produce shopping, and soba or a set meal.

04

Dollarbirds and a morning market give each season a reason to visit

Dollarbirds arrive from around May, and live video from nesting boxes is available in the rest area. Enjo Asaichi takes place on the fourth Sunday in April–June and September–October, making a morning stop especially appealing.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A weekend drive centered on shopping

Go on an autumn or winter morning for Enjo Chinese cabbage

From autumn into winter, Enjo Chinese cabbage at the farm shop is reason enough to come. Browse not only cabbages but also highland vegetables, fruit, processed foods, and flowers, and imagine the hot pots or pickles you can make at home.

Farm produce shop → early lunch at the restaurant → head home with the produce kept cool, or continue to Ugakei Gorge.

Come early for popular items or on market days. Decide how much to take home based on that day's stock, prices, and your available space.

A day to try local cuisine

Make kusagi greens over rice your lunch destination

Kusagi-na kake-meshi, rice topped with seasoned kusagi greens, is a Kibichuo Town dish recognized by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs as a 100-Year Food. Quantities are limited, so allow time during the restaurant's lunch hours and consider the udon or rice balls too.

Restaurant after 10:30 → farm produce shop → visitor information in the rest area.

Inquire in advance for a group or if you particularly want this dish. The restaurant is closed on Wednesdays.

An adult lunch or a rainy day

Settle in for lunch at Shinanoya

Adjacent Shinanoya has reopened as a restaurant serving gozen set meals made with local ingredients. On days when you prefer something other than udon, combine a more leisurely lunch there with a visit to the farm shop.

Shinanoya → farm produce shop → Komori Onsen or Yunose Onsen.

Listed hours are 11:00–14:00; it is listed as closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and public holidays. Check the latest information before visiting.

A nature drive from early summer through autumn

Add dollarbirds and Ugakei Gorge to the drive

Dollarbirds arrive from around May, while Ugakei Gorge's autumn leaves are a reason to drive later in the year. Eat and shop at the station, watch the birds quietly, and wear comfortable shoes for the gorge to make a full day of Kibi Highlands nature.

Roadside station → dollarbird observation → Ugakei Nature Park.

Avoid loud voices, occupying the viewing space for long periods, or approaching nesting boxes. Allow for busy roads and parking during autumn foliage season.

Fourth Sundays in April–June and September–October

Make Enjo Asaichi the reason for an early visit

Enjo Asaichi is a morning market with vegetables, food, and sundries. It runs for just 9:00–12:00, so visit the market first, then move on to lunch at the restaurant or a nearby hot spring.

Enjo Asaichi → farm produce shop → restaurant or Shinanoya → Komori Onsen.

The listed 2026 dates were September 27 and October 25; September 27 has passed. Treat earlier dates as a guide to the seasonal pattern and check the next event before traveling.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a short visit to the farm shop and rest area; this is not a play-focused facility for nursing or a long stay.

Avoid lunchtime and morning market crowds, and keep shopping brief.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Suitable for a meal, toilet stop, and short shopping visit. Seeing cabbages and other vegetables can be fun, but space for running around is limited.

Watch for water and steps if you add Ugakei Gorge.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The live dollarbird video, farm shop, and morning market can provide brief moments of discovery.

Birdwatching is more enjoyable once children can agree to watch quietly.

Elementary school children
★★★★☆

Connect lessons about where vegetables grow, local food, dollarbirds, and Ugakei Gorge.

Allow extra travel time for summer heat, autumn foliage crowds, and winter road conditions.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Cabbages stand out in autumn and winter

Travel sites and the tourism association highlight abundant cabbages around November, alongside processed foods, mochi rice cakes, sushi, and bread. In autumn and winter, an early stop for shopping is worthwhile.

Allow 30–60 minutes, longer for a meal

Visitors tend to use the farm shop, rest area, and restaurant together. Shopping alone can be quick; a meal at the restaurant or Shinanoya turns it into a longer lunch stop.

Limited portions and closed days matter for lunch

Kusagi greens over rice is listed as limited in quantity. The restaurant closes Wednesdays, while Shinanoya closes Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and public holidays, so check before setting out for a specific lunch.

A useful motorcycle or driving stop

Its National Route 429 location and parking make it a frequent rest stop for motorcycle rides and Kibi Highlands drives.

Watch dollarbirds quietly

The observation hut and live video make viewing possible, but considerate birdwatching shapes the experience. Families can plan it as a quiet activity.

Ugakei Gorge and hot springs extend the visit

For a longer outing, combine a station stop with nature at Ugakei Gorge or a visit to Komori Onsen or Yunose Onsen.
