How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

For a short stop
Shop at Yakuro and take a toilet break

Farm-direct sales generally run 9:00–17:00. Look for Yoshika vegetables, processed foods and kaku-zushi, a local pressed sushi, to take away.

If you arrive at lunchtime
Lunch at Vanvert no Mori

Lunch runs 11:00–14:30, with last orders at 14:00. Public dinner service is reported as unavailable, so lunch is the safer choice if you are coming to eat.

If you are tired
Recharge in the hot spring

The hot spring is open 10:00–21:00, with last admission at 20:00. A soak after driving is one of the station's chief attractions.

On a rainy day
Enjoy the hot spring and indoor art

Hanae Mori's tapestry and the building's architecture give you something to enjoy even when the weather turns bad.

On a clear day
Visit Suigen Park and Fukatani Bridge

Suigen Park is about 10 minutes by car, and Fukatani Bridge about 15 minutes. Fresh green foliage, autumn leaves and winter scenery each change the view.

If visiting at night
Check bath admission and meal times first

The shop and hot spring admissions both generally end at 20:00. Plan dinner elsewhere rather than counting on a late meal at the station.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Muikaichi Onsen deserves more than a quick transit stop. Browse Yoshika vegetables and kaku-zushi, a local pressed sushi, at Yakuro direct-sales and souvenir hall; then eat a lunch made with local rice and handmade tofu at Vanvert no Mori. After a stiffening drive, unwind in free-flowing spring water, an outdoor bath and a mist sauna. Near Muikaichi Interchange on the Chugoku Expressway, it also fits a route from Hiroshima or Yamaguchi toward Tsuwano, Masuda or Fukatani Gorge. With the parking, toilets and opening hours in mind, even a short break can become a small taste of Yoshika.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

An easy break just off the interchange

Close to Muikaichi Interchange, this is an easy first stop when entering western Shimane from Hiroshima or Yamaguchi. The hot spring, restaurant and farm-direct shop are separate, so choose Yakuro for a short stop, the restaurant for lunch or the baths when you need a longer rest.

02

Shop at Yakuro, relax at Yu-ra-ra

The appeal lies in the pairing of Yakuro direct-sales and souvenir hall with the Yu-ra-ra hot spring. Look for fresh vegetables and Yoshika local dishes at Yakuro, then rest in Yu-ra-ra's free-flowing spring water and outdoor bath. There is time both to buy something to take home and to sit down and relax.

03

Extend your trip into the town of the river's source

By car, you can also reach the Takatsu River's Suigen Park, its lone cedar, Fukatani Bridge and seasonal flowers. On a clear day, head toward water and forest; in rain or toward evening, choose the hot spring. The station makes a convenient starting point for Yoshika's natural attractions.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Drives into western Shimane from Hiroshima or Yamaguchi

Get settled just after leaving Muikaichi Interchange

Just off the expressway, you can start with the toilets, shop and farm-direct hall. During a long drive, decide on site whether to eat, shop or add a hot spring visit.

Muikaichi Interchange → Michi-no-Eki Muikaichi Onsen → Tsuwano or Masuda

The hot spring, restaurant and direct-sales hall have different hours. For dinner, consider places outside the station too.

Stops around lunchtime and drives focused on shopping

Combine lunch and farm-direct shopping, then take Yoshika flavors home

At the restaurant, choose dishes made with mountain-village ingredients such as Yoshika-grown rice and handmade tofu from Muikaichi soybeans. At Yakuro, browse vegetables and kaku-zushi, the local pressed sushi, for something to take home after the meal.

Shop at Yakuro → lunch at Vanvert no Mori → extra souvenirs at the shop

Lunch last orders are at 14:00. If lunch is your main goal, do not arrive too late.

Long drives and walks along mountain roads or gorges

Finish with a hot spring break after driving

Free-flowing spring water, an outdoor bath and a mist sauna make this a place to loosen up after driving. Return after a walk at Fukatani Gorge or Suigen Park to combine nature and a bath.

Suigen Park / Fukatani Bridge → Muikaichi Onsen Yu-ra-ra

There are monthly closure days. If the bath is your main purpose, check the official notices first.

Unpredictable weather or trips with older companions

On rainy days, slow down indoors

When the outdoor views are poor, spend less time heading to the gorge and more time in the hot spring, restaurant and indoor art displays. The glass-rich building and lobby exhibits offer more to enjoy than a bath alone.

Yakuro → inside Yu-ra-ra → hot spring

The direct-sales hall and hot spring have different hours. Check closing times even if you are stopping to escape the rain.

Adults wanting a short nature walk and families with elementary-school-age children or older

On a clear day, add the source of the Takatsu River

Add Suigen Park's lone cedar, Orochi-ga-ike Pond and the views from Fukatani Bridge for a sense of Yoshika as a town of water. Lunch and shopping at the station followed by one natural attraction in the afternoon make a comfortable plan.

Roadside station → Suigen Park → Fukatani Bridge, or reverse the route and finish at the hot spring

Road conditions and views around Fukatani Gorge change with the season and weather. Keep plans flexible in winter and after heavy rain.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or under
★★★☆☆

A nursing space and multipurpose toilet are listed, making a short break practical. If you also plan to bathe, check closures and crowds and keep the day manageable.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

The station works better for toilets, a little shopping and a short meal break than for a long stay centered on large play equipment. Reaching Suigen Park requires a drive.

Ages 4–6
★★★☆☆

This station suits children old enough to enjoy the baths and direct-sales hall together. For more outdoor play, add just one stop such as Suigen Park or a seasonal flower site.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Combine the hot spring, Suigen Park and Fukatani Bridge for nature and learning. Weather changes the feel of the river and gorge areas, so a clear-day half trip works well.

Toilets

A multipurpose toilet and Western-style toilets are listed; toilet use is permitted even for people who are not facility customers.

Nursing

Shimane Tourism Navi lists a nursing room or nursing space.

Outdoor play

Rather than spending a long time playing at the station, choose Suigen Park or another seasonal nature stop.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Park and orient yourself to the separate facilities

Yakuro, Yu-ra-ra and the restaurant keep different hours. Decide which you want first to avoid unnecessary walking between them.

  2. 2
    Aim to eat before 14:00

Restaurant last orders are at 14:00. Later in the day, the shop and hot spring may be easier options than a meal.

  3. 3
Check bath closures and admission times

Closures are irregular and announced by month. Last admission is 20:00, so check timing before an evening visit.

  4. 4
    Choose just one nature stop

Suigen Park and Fukatani Bridge are appealing but require driving. Picking one to match your energy makes for a slower-paced trip.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Yakuro direct-sales and souvenir hall

Seasonal events such as a cyclamen fair are sometimes advertised. Visit for farm-direct goods and changing flowers.

Muikaichi Onsen Yu-ra-ra notices

Look here for changes to monthly closures, prices, restaurant service and lodging plans. Check these notices before a bath-focused visit.

Yoshika Town nature sites

Seasonal sites for dogtooth violets, weeping cherry trees, rhododendrons, red spider lilies and red buckwheat are listed about 5–25 minutes away by car.

Suigen Park and the Takatsu River basin

Water and local culture meet at events such as the Suigen Festival. Check the town or tourism association for the current year's schedule.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A quiet night break near the interchange

Visitor reports on the roadside-station network mention the convenient position near Muikaichi Interchange for night breaks. If stopping after dark, check bath admission, shop closing time and parking-lot lighting, and rest at a comfortable pace.

The hot spring is a reason to stay longer

The official site lists free-flowing spring water, an outdoor bath and a mist sauna. Shimane Tourism Navi classifies the water as a simple weakly radioactive spring and lists its indicated benefits. If the bath is your goal, allow more time than a shopping stop.

For families, combine a short stop with one nature site

For children, use the toilets, nursing space, lunch and a little shopping, then extend to Suigen Park if their age suits it. With younger children, keep the stop manageable rather than trying to fit in every activity, including a bath.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The station is near Muikaichi Interchange; published travel estimates are about 75 minutes from Hiroshima Interchange and about 60 minutes from Yamaguchi Interchange. It is an easy first break after leaving the expressway.
  • Parking is listed for about 120 regular cars, three large vehicles and three vehicles for disabled drivers or passengers. On busy days, park with your chosen bath, shop or restaurant visit in mind.
  • The surrounding natural sites change with the season and weather. Around Fukatani Bridge and the gorge, check road conditions after rain or in winter, and allow for crowds during autumn foliage season.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

For lunch

Vanvert no Mori

With local rice, handmade tofu from Muikaichi soybeans, sushi lunches, set meals, rice bowls and noodles, the restaurant offers options for different tastes in your group.

Lunch is 11:00–14:30, with last orders at 14:00. Notices say dinner service is unavailable to non-overnight guests.

To take home

Farm-direct vegetables / processed foods / kaku-zushi pressed sushi

Yakuro is a place to bring a taste of Yoshika home. Browse local kaku-zushi pressed sushi, seasonal vegetables and processed foods, making the stop about more than the hot spring.

Farm-direct stock changes with the season and time of day. Arrive early if you have something specific in mind.

A small morning or evening purchase

Yu-ra-ra shop

Open 7:30–20:00, the shop offers a place for small purchases outside the direct-sales hall's hours. Pick up drinks or souvenirs before or after your bath.

For a full meal, plan around the lunchtime restaurant.

After the bath

Drinks / sweets / souvenirs

After bathing, take a little time to rest, then collect a drink or small souvenir at the shop before driving on.

Last bath admission is 20:00, when the shop also closes. Buying first may work better in the evening.

For a seasonal visit

Cyclamens / seasonal mountain-village vegetables

Yakuro sometimes advertises seasonal events such as a cyclamen fair. Flowers and vegetables give the same station a different appeal at different times of year.

Seasonal events have limited dates. Check the latest official website or Facebook announcements before visiting.
