How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Decide first
Stop before walking through town, or return for an onsen bath

The station is a little way from central Tsuwano, so your visit will differ depending on whether you stop first or end the day here.

If you want a meal
Iwami pork, wariko soba and Nagomi inari sushi

The restaurant generally serves until late afternoon on weekdays and into the evening on weekends and holidays. Hours may change because of weather or conditions at the facility.

If you want a sweet
Mamecha soft serve and Tsuwano Sabo cafe

Enjoy the aromas of mamecha and zaracha tea during a break in the car or after the bath.

If you want to shop
Genjimaki, mamecha, local sake, fermented foods and vegetables

Consider keeping purchases cool in summer and checking road conditions in winter; buy an amount that fits your journey home.

If you want to head out
Tonomachi Street, Taikodani Inari Shrine and Tsuwano Station

These are around 10 minutes away by car. Exploring the town is mostly on foot, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

Toma's stopover notes

Shop for Tsuwano flavors, then unwind in the bath.

Editor Toma Sawatari sees this station as a place to prepare for Tsuwano's food and town walk as well as to rest in a hot spring. Look over Genjimaki, mamecha, Iwami pork and local vegetables first, leaving more time for Tonomachi Street and the shrine. On the way back, rest at Asagiri no Yu and take home a sweet. That sequence makes the station a natural part of a day in Tsuwano.

Highlights

Michi no Eki Tsuwano Onsen Nagomi no Sato stands on Prefectural Route 13, a little outside Tsuwano's historic streets. In one stop you can use the natural radon hot spring Asagiri no Yu, a restaurant, Tsuwano Sabo cafe, a takeout shop, a farmers' market and a ground golf course. Shop for Genjimaki, a local rolled sponge cake with sweet bean filling, mamecha and zaracha herbal teas, local sake, fermented foods and Tsuwano-grown vegetables. Have Iwami pork or wariko soba, buckwheat noodles served in stacked bowls, for lunch, then relax in the bath before or after a walk through town. If you are heading to Tsuwano Station, Tonomachi Street or Taikodani Inari Shrine, decide when to eat here and whether to return for a break before setting out.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Add an onsen bath before or after a town walk

After walking Tonomachi Street and Taikodani Inari Shrine in central Tsuwano, return to Asagiri no Yu to warm up or wash off the sweat. Its large indoor bath, open-air bath, sauna, private family bath and free rest room make it easier for family members with different sightseeing plans to take a break.

02

Choose the restaurant, cafe or takeout to suit your time

Restaurant highlights include an Iwami pork tonkatsu set meal, tempura wariko soba and Nagomi inari sushi. Tsuwano Sabo, which opened in February 2026, is generally open 9:00–16:00; the takeout shop offers mamecha soft serve and yuzu juice. You can stop for lunch, a sweet after the bath or a small snack before driving on.

03

Start souvenir shopping with Tsuwano specialties

The farmers' market carries Tsuwano vegetables, Genjimaki, mamecha and zaracha teas, local sake, and fermented foods such as miso and soy sauce. It also sells Mamecha Uiro, a steamed sweet made in collaboration with a confectionery shop. You can pick up sweets that travel well by car alongside other local flavors.

04

An onsen complex with room for outdoor activities

Ground golf is generally available 9:00–18:00. Course use is free; a club-and-ball rental set costs ¥100 per person. Check the barbecue garden's booking requirements and operating season before planning a meal and outdoor activity on a fine day.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

For days when you arrive by car before noon

Get lunch and souvenirs before walking around Tsuwano

Eat Iwami pork or wariko soba at the restaurant and browse Genjimaki and mamecha at the farmers' market before heading to Tonomachi Street. Having lunch at the roadside station, where parking is easier, can leave more time for Taikodani Inari Shrine and the Japan Heritage Center than searching for a meal in town.

Lunch and a look at the shops at the roadside station → Tonomachi Street → Taikodani Inari Shrine

The restaurant can get busy on weekends, holidays and festival days. Keep your town-walk start time flexible so you can switch to takeout or Tsuwano Sabo if needed.

Before driving home after sightseeing in Tsuwano

Return in the evening for an onsen bath and a sweet

After walking Tonomachi Street or the shrine steps, wash off the sweat at Asagiri no Yu and rest in the free rest room. If you still have to drive, you might prefer a short stop for mamecha soft serve, yuzu juice or a sweet from the shop to a heavy meal.

Town walk → return to the roadside station → Asagiri no Yu → gift shop or takeout → depart

The onsen is generally closed on Thursdays, and final admission is at 20:15. The family bath and paid rest room require reservations.

Families with preschool and elementary-school children

With children, eat here before seeing the locomotive at Tsuwano Station

Use the toilets and get a meal and a sweet at the roadside station, then head to the displayed steam locomotive and turntable near Tsuwano Station. This gives children something specific to look forward to. The roadside station also has ground golf and outdoor facilities, but pairing it with the railway and town walk adds more variety to the day.

Meal at the roadside station → Tsuwano Station and locomotive display → short walk along Tonomachi Street

In summer, plan for sun and drinking water; in winter, check mountain roads and the road surface. The station's play facilities alone may not fill a long visit.

For a July traditional event or an evening performance

On Sagimai or evening kagura days, check current event details first

The Sagimai ritual dance moves through town; Tsuwano evening kagura performances and the station night market are held at particular times. The roadside station offers a place for food or a bath away from the busiest central streets, but dates, times and wet-weather arrangements can substantially change your route.

Check the tourism association's same-day notice → eat or bathe at the roadside station → travel to the town center

On event days, parking, roads and restaurant waits may differ from normal. A focused stop for just a bath or shopping may be easier.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

The nursing room and diaper-changing area can be combined with a rest near the baths.

Keep the visit light: toilets, nursing, the shop and a short break may be easier than making a long meal or bath the main activity.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Meals and sweets are convenient, but this is not a place for hours of play on its own.

Ground golf and outdoor facilities require adult supervision. If you walk around town, keep heat and walking distance in mind.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Combine mamecha soft serve, the steam locomotive display and streets with carp-filled waterways for variety.

Eat at the station, then head to Tsuwano Station or Tonomachi Street for a change from eating to looking and walking.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Extend the visit to the locomotive, Taikodani Inari Shrine and the Japan Heritage Center for learning stops.

The town offers different experiences on Sagimai days in summer, steam-train operating days and station night-market days. Check the tourism association's schedule in advance.

Facilities for infants

The tourism guide lists a nursing room and diaper-changing area among the facility information.

Hot spring baths

The family bath costs ¥1,000 for 60 minutes plus the bathing fee, and requires advance booking.

Outdoor play

There is ground golf, but pairing it with places around town works better than planning a long stay for large playground equipment.

Town walk

Tonomachi Street and the shrine are mainly visited on foot. Watch for summer heat and winter road surfaces and mountain weather.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Sagimai ritual dance

A traditional event held around Tsuwano on July 20 and 27 each year. Since 2025, the route has generally begun around 16:00; in rain, it may move to the Town Residents' Center gymnasium.

Tsuwano evening kagura and town events

The tourism association announced a special Tsuwano evening kagura performance for July 18, 2026, and a Tsuwano Station night market for August 1. On an evening-event day, the roadside station can be a convenient place for a meal or bath away from the town center.

Barbecue garden and ground golf

Outdoor facilities at the roadside station. Check the barbecue season and reservation requirements. Ground golf is generally available 9:00–18:00; course use is free, and a club-and-ball set costs ¥100 per person to rent.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The onsen can end your day or be the main stop on a rainy one

The operator lists a natural simple radioactive cold mineral spring, a large indoor bath, open-air bath, sauna, family bath and rest rooms. Much of a Tsuwano town walk is outdoors, so planning the bath for later in the day can make rain, heat or cold easier to manage.

Include the cafe and takeout in your meal plan

The restaurant features local ingredients and Iwami pork, while Tsuwano Sabo and the takeout shop serve at different times. At weekend lunchtime, tourists and local diners may overlap; if the restaurant has a wait, a sweet or the shop can keep your town walk from starting too late.

Pick up Tsuwano specialties in a short shopping stop

The farmers' market brings together Genjimaki, mamecha and zaracha tea, local sake, crafts, Tsuwano vegetables and fermented foods. Even if you cannot browse shops in town at length, you can buy characteristic Tsuwano gifts here.

Plan a separate drive to central Tsuwano

Tsuwano Station is described as about 10 minutes away by car; Tonomachi Street and Taikodani Inari Shrine are in the town-center area. Choosing whether to use the roadside station before a meal, after sightseeing or before driving home makes the switch between driving and walking smoother than repeated trips back and forth.

On locomotive and Sagimai days, follow the town's schedule

The tourism association posts information about the SL Yamaguchi steam train, Sagimai ritual dance, Tsuwano evening kagura and the station night market. On event days, town-center timings shape your itinerary; use the day's information to decide whether the bath, meal and shopping come before or after the event.

Mountain roads change with the season and weather

Tsuwano lies among mountains, and routes from the Chugoku Expressway use national and prefectural roads. The shrine's official site links to road and snow information. In winter or bad weather, check mountain passes and travel around town as well as the bath's opening status.
