Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Yuhi Park Hamada sits on a hill overlooking Hamada Port and the Sea of Japan. At Gochiso Market, browse Hamada dried fish, the Donchicchi Three Fish (a Hamada seafood brand), akaten (a spicy fried fish cake) and Iwami Kagura souvenirs. Eat at seafood restaurant Aizuya Hachiemon or noodle shop Yuhi-tei, then, if the timing works, wait for sunset on the observation deck. As a stop on the San-in Expressway and National Route 9, it offers Hamada food and views even on a short break. Families can visit Yuhi Park behind the station; adults can add the Hamada Castle Ruins or Hamada Fish Market. On a clear day, Iwami Tatamigaura and Iwami Seaside Park can turn the stop into a day in this port town.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A gateway to Hamada for food and shopping as well as sunsets

The sunset lives up to the station's name. A stop before or after a meal also brings together seafood from Hamada Port, dried fish, akaten and Iwami Kagura souvenirs. It is a place to enjoy several sides of Hamada in a short visit, with a fine view as well.

02

Enjoy choosing among nodoguro, akaten and dried fish

Gochiso Market carries the Hamada-branded Donchicchi Three Fish, dried fish, Hamada sweets and specialties from the wider Iwami area. Whether or not you sit down for a meal, choosing food for home or souvenirs can become part of the trip.

03

A park for children, port and sunset views for adults

Yuhi Park behind the station has play equipment, a gazebo and benches, making it a useful break while waiting for food or recovering from a drive. Adults can head for the observation deck and Hamada Port views while children spend time in the park; the station can accommodate both interests.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A midday break on the San-in Expressway or National Route 9

Make Hamada Port seafood the goal of lunch

Even on a journey, Hamada's seafood is worth making time for. Eat a port-town meal at Aizuya Hachiemon; on a shorter stop, choose Yuhi-tei or MOS Burger. Browse Gochiso Market afterward and lunch becomes a chance to shop for Hamada foods.

Park → eat → Gochiso Market → observation deck.

Food outlets can keep different hours from the main station. At lunchtime, leave room to visit the market or viewpoint first rather than relying on one restaurant alone.

An evening drive in Hamada

Fill the hour before sunset with shopping and sweets

Arrive a little before sunset to enjoy more than the view. Look at dried fish and akaten in Gochiso Market, have a snack, then go outside to see the port and horizon. Even if clouds hide the sun, the food and shopping still make the stop worthwhile.

Gochiso Market → food court → viewpoint → depart after sunset.

This coastal hilltop can be windy; on blustery days or in winter, dress for a shorter stay outside.

Families with preschool and elementary school children

Use the park behind the station as a family break

When food and shopping are not enough to keep children engaged, a break at Yuhi Park can reset the mood. It has play equipment renewed in 2021, benches and a gazebo, with plum and cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage later in the year.

Eat → Yuhi Park → toilets → shop for souvenirs.

The park is mostly outdoors, so keep the visit short in midday summer heat, rain or strong wind. With an infant, locate the nursing and diaper-changing facilities first.

Adults focused on shopping

Go on to the market for more of Hamada's fish

After looking at dried and processed fish at the roadside station, visit Hamada Fish Market for a deeper look at the port's produce. Go early for the intermediate wholesalers' building; the commercial building and food court suit midday or afternoon. Plan how to keep purchases cool for the trip home.

Yuhi Park Hamada → Hamada Fish Market, a short drive to the port.

The market's buildings have different hours and closing days. Pay particular attention to Tuesdays, Saturdays and market holidays.

Nature, photography and children of elementary school age or older

On a clear day, visit Iwami Tatamigaura and the seaside park

After food and shopping, explore the geological layers at Iwami Tatamigaura or the beach at Iwami Seaside Park for another side of Hamada's coast. Tatamigaura requires watching your footing, so it is better suited to older children and adults.

Yuhi Park Hamada → Iwami Tatamigaura → Iwami Seaside Park / Aquas.

Wind, waves, tides and heat affect coastal walks. In bad weather, Aquas or the market is an easier choice.

A short adult sightseeing stop or spring cherry blossoms

Add the history of Hamada Castle Ruins

Hamada Castle Ruins can be walked as Shiroyama Park, where stone walls remain. After looking over the port from the roadside station, look back across the town and sea from the castle site for a sense of Hamada's history as a port town.

Yuhi Park Hamada → Hamada Castle Ruins and Hamada Castle Museum.

There are stone steps and slopes. Keep the walk short in heat or if footing is a concern; in rain, focus on the museum.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a short stay using the nursing space, diaper-changing area and indoor rest area. On windy days, favor the indoors over the viewpoint.

Avoid peak meal times and locate the toilets and rest area first.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Yuhi Park's play equipment offers a good change of pace. Fit outdoor play between eating and shopping.

The park is mainly outdoors; keep visits short in midday summer heat, rain or strong wind.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Children can enjoy the park, views, snacks and choosing souvenirs. On regular Iwami Kagura performance days, they can also experience local culture.

Kagura can be loud and intense; if a child may be frightened, sit near an exit.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Add a geological walk at Tatamigaura, Aquas or Hamada Castle Ruins to the park. Food, nature and history can fill a day.

Watch your footing at Tatamigaura and the castle ruins; comfortable walking shoes help.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A visit is more satisfying when sunset is not the only goal

The official site lists sunset times and viewing spots, but clouds and wind can change a coastal sunset. Arrive a little early, shop and have a snack before heading to the viewpoint; even a muted sunset can leave you with a taste of Hamada.

Seafood at lunch; shops and views later in the day

Traveler reviews mention shop hours and shorter weekday service. If lunch is your main purpose, arrive early; later in the day, focus on Gochiso Market and the viewpoint to keep plans flexible.

The parking area is large; knowing the shared two-direction access helps

The Hamada City Tourism Association says the facility serves both directions. Drivers on the downbound carriageway pass beneath the main road to reach the facility on the upbound side. On the San-in Expressway Hamada Bypass, follow signs and watch the approach.

A park break helps children recover from the drive

Yuhi Park is behind the roadside station. The tourism association lists play equipment renewed in 2021, a gazebo and benches. Time waiting for food or shopping can become time for children to move outdoors.

Leave time for food and parking on Kagura days

The station hosts a free regular Iwami Kagura performance on the second Sunday of each month, with no reservation required. You may stay longer than on an ordinary rest stop, so leave time for food and shopping around the performance.

Choose the market, Tatamigaura or Aquas according to the weather

On a clear day, visit Iwami Tatamigaura or Iwami Seaside Park for coastal nature. In rain or strong wind, Aquas or Hamada Fish Market lets you continue exploring Hamada's connection to the sea indoors. The station makes a useful starting point for either plan.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Hours differ among the main station, food outlets, rest area, parking and toilets. If you plan to eat in the evening, check the individual restaurant's hours first.

  • Drivers on the downbound carriageway pass beneath the main road to reach the facility on the upbound side. Watch the signs and approach when entering from the San-in Expressway Hamada Bypass.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Sit down for seafood

Aizuya Hachiemon

A seafood restaurant using fish landed at Hamada Port and produce from the mountains. The view also makes it a good lunch destination.

Open 11:00–15:00 (last orders 14:30); closed Wednesdays. The restaurant also hosts groups and meetings, so allow time at lunch.

Eat something light

Noodle Shop Yuhi-tei / MOS Burger

Useful when you want a lighter meal than seafood, food children may find easier to eat, or a quick stop while driving.

Yuhi-tei: 9:00–18:00, irregular closing days. MOS Burger: weekdays 10:00–20:00; weekends and public holidays 9:00–20:00. Check official or in-store notices later in the day.

Buy food to take home

Gochiso Market dried fish / Donchicchi Three Fish / akaten

These are distinctive Hamada foods to take home. Combining chilled and processed products can extend the trip to your dinner table.

A cooler bag gives you more flexibility when shopping.

Pause for sweets and tea

Misumi yokan / Sekishu Hamada tea / sea-salt chocolate

Even without a restaurant meal, sweets and tea make characteristic Iwami gifts. They work for the car or as presents.

Selections change with the season and deliveries.

Explore local culture

Iwami Kagura souvenirs / Hamada sweets / original products

Beyond the fish, Iwami Kagura souvenirs and Hamada sweets give a fuller sense of the area. Kagura is a traditional theatrical dance of the Iwami region.

Performance and event days can change how busy the shop and parking are.
