Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Higashiura Terminal Park is on National Route 28, a few minutes via Prefectural Route 460 from Higashiura Interchange on the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway. It adjoins Higashiura Bus Terminal, served by express and local island buses; toilets, parking and public telephones are available 24 hours. On site are the Floral Island farm shop, Higashiura Souvenir Hall “Yume no Hama,” and Yamataka, known for whole pressed octopus. Awaji City Pottery Center and the Minoru Nakahama Cat Art Museum are a short walk away, as is Ura Kenmin Sun Beach, which opens for swimming only in summer. Shops and facilities keep different hours and closing days, so check each venue's information if you plan to eat or take part in an activity.

Rinta Kobayakawa's Higashiura notes

Rest first. Then decide whether to shop, try an activity or take a walk.

Higashiura Terminal Park need not be a long stop. Toilets and parking are available 24 hours, and the bus waiting room is open 6:00–23:00. After a rest, choose among the farm shop, souvenir hall, pottery center, cat museum and seafront according to your time and energy. Pick one extra activity for today instead of trying to cover everything; that is an easy way to use this stop.

1

Check the hours first

Opening times differ by venue. The farm shop opens at 9:00, Yamataka and the cultural facilities at 10:00, and rental bicycles must be returned by 17:00. What you can do depends on your arrival time.

2

Change your plan on Mondays

The pottery center and cat museum close on Mondays. On a closure day, focus on shopping, resting and the coastal scenery.

3

Know which shop has what

Floral Island has vegetables and flowers; “Yume no Hama” has souvenirs; Yamataka has octopus and onions. You can go directly to the right shop.

4

Set your walking distance before you leave the car

The pottery center, cat museum and seafront are all within walking distance, but visiting all three adds up. Decide how far to go before setting off.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A useful base by bus or car

Higashiura Bus Terminal connects with Kosoku Maiko, Sannomiya, Shin-Kobe and Iwaya; its waiting room is open 6:00–23:00. Toilets, parking and public telephones are available 24 hours, with 109 standard-car spaces, 10 large-vehicle spaces and 4 accessible spaces.

02

Choose a shop for what you want to buy

Floral Island sells vegetables, cut flowers, fresh fish and processed foods; “Yume no Hama” has souvenirs such as fukimodoshi blowout toys and processed onion products; Yamataka sells whole pressed octopus and onions. Separate shops for each purpose make a short stop easier to navigate.

03

Walk from the parking area to culture and the seafront

Awaji City Pottery Center (Ura 668-1) and the Minoru Nakahama Cat Art Museum (Ura 668-2) are in the same area, with Ura Kenmin Sun Beach next door. You can add a brief activity or walk to a shopping stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive between the Iwaya and Sumoto areas

Take a 20-minute break while travelling on National Route 28

Parking and toilets are available 24 hours, making this a rest stop at any time. When the farm shop is open, pick up a drink and fruit; when it is closed, use the toilets and information corner, then continue. A simple stop makes the next leg easier to plan.

Park → toilets → information corner → farm shop → depart

Shops on site keep different hours. If shopping is your aim, roughly 9:00–17:00 is the most reliable window.

Travel to or from Sannomiya and Kosoku Maiko

Use the wait for an express bus to shop and rest

The Higashiura Bus Terminal waiting room is open 6:00–23:00, so you can wait indoors for early or late buses. During the day, a circuit of the farm shop and souvenir hall fits a modest wait.

Bus arrival → waiting room → farm shop and souvenir hall → board

The waiting room and shops have different hours. For a late bus, plan on the waiting room and toilets rather than shopping.

A day when you want to try one Awaji Island specialty

Come around lunchtime for whole pressed octopus

Yamataka is open 10:00–17:00. Its signature dish presses one whole common octopus. Afterwards, choose souvenirs at “Yume no Hama” and vegetables at Floral Island to combine food and shopping in one stop.

Park → Yamataka → Yume no Hama → Floral Island → depart

A notice says sales of dried octopus have stopped. If you want a particular item, call ahead to check availability.

Rainy or hot days, and families with primary-school children or older

Spend half a day indoors with pottery and cat art

Awaji City Pottery Center opens 10:00–18:00; registration for activities ends at 16:00. Children below primary-school age can join clay work or painting with an accompanying adult, while the electric potter's wheel is for junior-high-school students and older. Combine it with the nearby Minoru Nakahama Cat Art Museum (adults ¥620, junior- and senior-high-school students ¥310, primary-school children ¥210) for a half-day independent of the weather.

Park → pottery activity → cat museum → souvenirs at the hall

Both venues close on Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a public holiday). Choose a different plan for that day.

A day planned around cycling

Cycle along Awaji Island's east coast

Bicycle Hub Awaji, inside Higashiura Souvenir Hall, is open 8:30–19:00. You can park at the roadside station, rent a bicycle and ride towards the coast along National Route 28. The souvenir hall is also convenient after your ride.

Park → rental desk → ride the east coast → return bicycle → souvenir hall

Return rentals by 17:00, or 16:30 from late November through February. Confirm opening days and stock when booking.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

There is a multipurpose toilet; a short toilet, shopping and rest stop is manageable with a very young child.

Places to spend a long time indoors are limited. This works best as a break or transfer stop rather than a long visit.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Keep the visit in small stages: look around the farm shop and souvenir hall, then take a short walk outside.

Conditions by the sea change with the season and weather. In summer, choose a time to avoid the strongest sun.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Children below primary-school age can try clay work or painting at the pottery center with an accompanying adult.

Activity registration ends at 16:00. The center closes on Mondays, so check the day when planning a pottery visit.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

Options include pottery, the cat museum (¥210 for primary-school children), bicycle rental and a seaside walk.

The electric potter's wheel is for junior-high-school students and older. For rental bicycles, plan backwards from the return deadline: 17:00, or 16:30 in the winter period.

Day of the week

The pottery center and cat museum close on Mondays (the following weekday if Monday is a public holiday). On a closure day, focus on shopping and resting.

Time

Pottery activity registration ends at 16:00 and bicycles must be returned by 17:00 (16:30 in the winter period). Plan your arrival accordingly.

Food

Yamataka is open 10:00–17:00. If you arrive early in the morning or late in the day, plan to eat elsewhere.

Seafront

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Eat something light

Yamataka's whole pressed octopus

Open 10:00–17:00. A way to try one Awaji Island specialty without planning a large meal.

It is a whole octopus, so the portion is substantial. Sharing it can leave room for the rest of your food plans.

Shop to take home

Awaji Island onions, seasonal vegetables, cut flowers, fresh fish and ikanago no kugini (small fish simmered in sweet soy sauce)

Floral Island is listed as open daily from 9:00–18:00 and is useful for choosing ingredients to use after your trip.

Produce and fresh fish depend on deliveries. The selection may be smaller late in the day.

Choose souvenirs

Fukimodoshi blowout toys, onion dressings, soups and sweets, Awaji Island noodles, and cat merchandise

“Yume no Hama” is listed as open 9:00–17:00. Consider it for a range of familiar Awaji Island souvenirs.

Some items, including large takoyaki octopus balls, are sold only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The weekday selection differs.

Add an activity

Pottery, cat museum, bicycle rental and seaside walk

After 10:00, you can add a pottery activity or museum visit; on a cycling day, rent from Bicycle Hub Awaji.

The pottery center and cat museum close on Mondays. Return bicycles by 17:00 (16:30 in the winter period).
