Sakurako's detour notes

Before going to the river, settle meals, toilets and places for dogs and children.

Sakurako Ichinose describes Michi-no-Eki Chikusa as a stop where the temptation to start playing makes a quick plan worthwhile. Check river levels, day-camp reception, the dog run and restaurant hours first. That makes summer river play, a rainy-day search for tsuchinoko merchandise and a winter break after the highlands easier for the whole family.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Chikusa is a small roadside station on Prefectural Route 72 beside the Chikusa River, especially useful for river play and a break with your dog. At the restaurant, choose from the Koi suru Tonkatsu pork-cutlet set meal, dango-jiru dumpling soup or dishes made with game meat. The shop has Chikusa manju sweets, local vegetables and tsuchinoko souvenirs inspired by a legendary creature. Sakurako Ichinose suggests checking the toilets and activity reception first, then choosing a meal or the riverbank and checking where children and dogs can play safely. A short break can become a summer half-day outing or a stop on a winter drive to the highlands.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A riverside break can become an outdoor outing

The station faces the Chikusa River, and the day campsite pairs naturally with river play and BBQ. Conditions depend on the weather and water level, but in summer it can be a half-day destination rather than just a toilet stop.

02

Clear places for visitors with dogs

The dog run, dog café and dog-friendly day-camping route make it easier to plan a visit. The shop also carries snacks and food for dogs, so they can share in the stop.

03

Tsuchinoko gives the stop a Chikusa character

Merchandise and menu items draw on tales of the tsuchinoko, a legendary creature associated with the former Chikusa town. For children it adds a small sense of discovery; for adults it is a local story to take away.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Passing through

A 30-minute riverside break

The car park, toilets, shop and a look at the river can refresh a mountain drive. If you skip the restaurant, browse Chikusa manju or tsuchinoko souvenirs briefly before leaving.

Car park → toilets → shop → view of the Chikusa River → departure

Before visiting, check official and city notices for Monday temporary closures and the usual Thursday closure.

A half day with children or dogs

Summer river play and day camping

Check in, confirm your site, changing area and river level, then start playing. Bring your own BBQ supplies and plan the cleanup. Children can use suitable shallow areas; dogs can enjoy the dog run or designated dog-friendly camping sites.

Reception → site check → river play or dog run → restaurant or BBQ → shop

If the river is high, there is lightning or the heat is extreme, focus on the restaurant and shop instead of the water.

A drive with your dog

A meal with your dog

Let your dog exercise in the run, then wash its paws, offer water and move on to the dog café or an area where dogs may accompany you. Food and treats for dogs give them something to enjoy too.

Dog-run reception → run → paw wash → dog café or dining area → shop

On breed-specific event days or busy days, check reception and site limits early.

A seasonal drive

Continue to Chikusa Kogen

In spring or autumn, head toward the highlands or the waterfall; in winter, toward Chikusa Kogen Ski Area. Using the station for toilets and a meal before the mountain road helps families break up the drive.

Michi-no-Eki Chikusa → Chikusa Kogen or Mimuro Falls → E-gaiya Chikusa onsen

Check snow and icy roads in winter and the early sunset in spring and autumn; leave enough time for mountain driving.

When river play is off the plan

Local stories on a rainy day

If you cannot enter the river, turn to the restaurant, shop, tsuchinoko merchandise and nearby onsen. Decide in advance what to enjoy indoors if you had planned an outdoor day.

Restaurant → shop → tsuchinoko merchandise → E-gaiya Chikusa onsen

After rain, the current may be stronger than it looks. Watching from the bank can be the safer choice.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★☆☆☆

Toilets and a shop visit work well, but making the river or BBQ the main event means more gear and safety checks.

Locate a changing spot, shade and a place to nurse before you start, and keep the visit short if that is easier.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Looking at the shallows, making a quick shop purchase and resting at the restaurant suit this age.

River play depends on water depth and footing. Bring enough adults to keep full attention on the waterside.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Summer river play, day camping and hunting for tsuchinoko merchandise offer plenty to enjoy.

Bring life jackets, spare clothes, towels and shade for a more comfortable stay.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

River play, BBQ, helping at the dog run and a detour toward Chikusa Kogen can turn the stop into a half-day trip.

Explain no-swimming areas, rising water and slippery stones before play begins.

Toilets and changing

Information on the day campsite lists toilets and a changing area. Locate them before entering the water.

Rainy days

Switch to the restaurant, shop, tsuchinoko merchandise or a nearby onsen.

With dogs

There is a dog run, dog café and a route through the dog-friendly day-camping area. Confirm reception and conditions of use on the day.

Riverside safety

Check for rising water, lightning, footing and no-swimming signs; be ready to stay out of the water.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Check the opening day after parking

The station normally closes on Thursdays, and the city announces temporary Monday closures. Confirm the day before making a trip mainly for a meal.

  2. 2
Decide whether to go down to the river

The riverbank is pleasant, but footing and water level affect how much effort it takes. Viewing it from above is also a good break.

  3. 3
Finish the return trip at the onsen

On a day with little walking, drive to E-gaiya Chikusa onsen to round off a mountain-area outing.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Day campsite

An outdoor area for BBQ, river play and dog-friendly sites. In summer, reservations and water-level checks matter.

Dog run

A hub for breed-specific events and meeting other dog owners. Check paw-washing, water and bench facilities too.

Under the eaves and in front of the shop

A venue for sheltered markets and small sales events. Check official notices to see whether events proceed in rain.

Tsuchinoko hub

A place for tsuchinoko merchandise, participatory projects and crowdfunding news that shares Chikusa's local lore.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

On busy summer days, plan for reception and crowds even if you only want the river

The tourism association and visitor accounts describe site limits and capacity controls at the day campsite, which can fill in summer. If river play is the main goal, check reservations, reception and water levels in that order.

With a dog, the visit can include a meal and shopping as well as the run

The dog run, dog café, dog food and dog-friendly day camping mean you can plan more than a brief exercise stop. On hot days, prioritize rest and water over river play.

The restaurant mixes practical mountain fare with local themes

Koi suru Tonkatsu, dango-jiru, game meat and tsuchinoko-themed dishes can be a meal before river play or the focus of a rainy visit. Published hours differ, so check the official site if a meal is your main reason to go.

Tsuchinoko gives children a reason to explore the shop

Merchandise and projects draw on tales of the tsuchinoko from the former Chikusa town. Even when the river is off limits, children can look for and choose something connected to the local legend.

The riverside feels cool but depends on shade and water levels

Visitor accounts recommend planning shade and checking which areas permit swimming. Bring a tarp, spare clothes, suitable shoes and life jackets; after rain, be prepared to stay out of the water.

The station serves a different purpose each season

Spring brings mountain vegetables, summer river play, autumn foliage, and winter skiing and hot meals. In winter, check both road conditions toward Chikusa Kogen and restaurant hours.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • In addition to the usual Thursday closure, Shiso City announced temporary Monday closures from April 7, 2025, until further notice. If you are going for the restaurant or shop, check official and city notices before leaving.
  • For river play or day camping, reservations, reception, site allocation, weather and water levels make a big difference. An early start is easier to plan on summer weekends.
  • Bring and clean up your own BBQ supplies. Follow signs about taking rubbish home, disposing of charcoal and permitted swimming areas.
  • With a dog, plan for paw washing, drinking water and shade after the run. Check the official Instagram account for breed-specific events and busy days.
  • For children at the river, even shallow water can have slippery stones and a sudden rise in level. After rain or with lightning forecast, choose the shop, restaurant or onsen instead.
  • When continuing toward Chikusa Kogen in winter, check ice, snow and sunset time. Use the station's toilets and restaurant before entering the mountain road.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Meal
    Koi suru Tonkatsu set meal
A restaurant favorite: a pork-cutlet set meal. Check the restaurant for current availability.
  • Meal
    Dango-jiru set meal

  • Meal
    Game-meat dishes

    Tsuchinoko merchandise
Possible mementos include commemorative tickets, key rings and hand towels featuring the legendary creature.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Eat before river play

Koi suru Tonkatsu set meal, dango-jiru, udon

If you arrive before lunch, eat at the restaurant first. That makes changing clothes and handling bags easier before heading to the river.

Check the official restaurant information for opening hours, last orders and temporary closures.

Bring what you need for a BBQ

Local vegetables and shop products

You can browse vegetables and sweets in the shop, but plan to bring your own main BBQ ingredients.

Follow the day-campsite guidance on taking rubbish home, site allocations and charcoal disposal.

A travel treat for the dog

Venison dog food and dog treats

After the dog run, look in the shop for dog products to take along.

A quick taste of the area

Chikusa manju and tsuchinoko merchandise

Even without a restaurant meal, a sweet or a tsuchinoko souvenir makes a short stop feel distinctive to Chikusa.

Returning from the highlands in winter

Hot meals and a nearby onsen

After a trip to Chikusa Kogen or the ski area, restaurant hours determine whether to eat at the station or head toward E-gaiya Chikusa's hot spring.
