Yui Hayase's stopover note

Motsuni, rice and a footbath: choose what stays with you before or after the mountain road.

Yui Hayase sees this as a mountain-road rest stop with a clear reason to eat, rather than a large souvenir hall. Start with warm motsuni or a sweet snack, take home some Minamiuonuma rice or local sake, and use the footbath or Kaido-no-Yu to reset before the next leg. Its appeal is the short, simple route between eating, shopping and resting.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Mitsumata is a small mountain roadside station on National Route 17 as you climb from the Yuzawa interchange toward Gunma, before Kagura Ski Resort and Mikuni Pass. Its highlights are tender motsuni (simmered offal), Koshihikari rice from Minamiuonuma, local Echigo sake, sweets made with Mitsumata honey and a free hot-spring footbath. Add a bath at neighboring Kaido-no-Yu to unwind after skiing, hiking, autumn leaves or Fuji Rock before continuing. Parking is limited, so keep meals and shopping focused; on busy days, the footbath, cafe or bathhouse offer other ways to take a break.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Warm motsuni makes a welcome meal after the mountains

The restaurant mainly serves set meals, rice bowls and noodles made with Niigata ingredients; its signature is motsuni, several cuts of offal simmered until tender. Chashu pork rice bowls, miso chashu noodles and motsu curry are other options. On a cold day or around a drive, choose between a warming stew, a quick bowl or just a sweet snack.

02

Choose a short footbath or a longer soak at Kaido-no-Yu

The free footbaths indoors and outside are handy for a quick pause after removing your shoes. With more time, visit the neighboring public bath Kaido-no-Yu, which has an open-air bath and rest room. Official notices cover ski equipment and muddy hiking boots, so sort out your gear before entering after skiing or hiking.

03

A rest stop shaped by Route 17 and Mitsumata's seasons

This gateway from Kanto to Niigata works both as a first stop after crossing Mikuni Pass from Gunma and as a place to stock up before climbing from Yuzawa toward Kagura. Winter brings snowy roads and skiing; spring through autumn bring hiking, river outings and foliage. Check road conditions and closing times, and decide whether to do larger shopping around Echigo-Yuzawa Station first.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 45-minute break on a Route 17 drive

Pause for food and a footbath before or after Mikuni Pass

With few parking spaces, a focused stop works better than a long stay. Use the toilet, have motsuni or a chashu rice bowl at the restaurant, then visit the footbath. Warm up before descending toward the Yuzawa interchange or climbing toward Gunma.

Parking → toilets → restaurant → footbath → local products shop

Check Tuesday closures and seasonal hours. In winter or bad weather, prioritize road information; do any shopping needed after closing around Echigo-Yuzawa Station.

After skiing, hiking or trekking

Finish a day at Kagura with a bath at Kaido-no-Yu

Have a light meal or sweet snack at the roadside station, then bathe next door at Kaido-no-Yu before heading home. The bathhouse opens into the evening, so there is still a rest option after the station closes. Follow its rules on skis and muddy footwear; sorting your gear in the car first makes the visit easier.

Kagura → food and shopping at the roadside station → Kaido-no-Yu → Yuzawa interchange

Kaido-no-Yu is also normally closed Tuesdays. For public holidays, New Year and Obon, check its official information or the town website for schedule changes.

A seasonal Yuzawa drive

Come for autumn foliage and sweets, or winter supplies before snowy roads

In autumn, combine Naeba Dragondola, Tashiro Ropeway or Trekking Yuzawa 1 with food and a footbath here. Winter hours differ, and nearby convenience stores are scarce. Stock up on food, drinks and cold-weather essentials here, or shop around Echigo-Yuzawa Station before climbing.

Yuzawa interchange → roadside station → foliage or ski destination → bath or return trip

Autumn operations, ski lifts, snow and road conditions change from year to year. Check current conditions before fixing your plans around seasonal activities.

Travel for an event or overnight stay near Naeba

Separate supplies and rest stops on a Fuji Rock or Naeba trip

Shops around Mitsumata and Kagura are limited, and the roadside station closes in the evening. On your way to an event or accommodation, use it for extra drinks or snacks, toilets and road information. On the return trip, a footbath or bathhouse can offer a break before traffic.

Major shopping near Echigo-Yuzawa Station → extra supplies at the roadside station → Naeba area

Traffic and parking patterns change during major events. Plan to obtain your main food supplies elsewhere.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Suitable for a short toilet stop and a supervised footbath visit.

The station is compact and is not a place for extended play. In winter, snow, wet floors and taking shoes on and off add effort; choosing one goal, such as a meal or shopping, makes the stop easier.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

The footbath and sweets can be fun, but watch the route through the parking area beside Route 17.

Check the footbath temperature and wet surfaces; a change of clothes and a towel help. Decide what to eat before going around the shop to keep the stop short.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Soft serve, the footbath and a bathhouse make an easy travel break.

A good reward stop after skiing or autumn foliage. Combine a warm meal, footbath and nearby bath rather than coming for playground equipment.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Good prompts for talking about snow-country roads, mountains, hot springs and local food.

Kagura Ski Resort, Kiyotsu River, Dragondola and Kaido-no-Yu can turn a simple stop into a seasonal outing. In winter, plan for wet shoes and gloves.

Event

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Free hot-spring footbath

As a guide, both indoor and outdoor footbaths are available May–November, and only the indoor one December–April. A short warm-up after a meal is easy, but in winter plan for wet footwear and socks.

Kaido-no-Yu bathhouse

The adjacent public bath is generally open 10:00–21:00, with final admission at 20:30. It remains an option after the roadside station closes, especially after skiing, hiking or autumn foliage.

Seasons for nearby activities

From spring through autumn: Mount Naeba, Mount Tairappyo, river outings and foliage; in winter: Kagura Ski Resort. Before or after these trips, the station offers food, a footbath, road information and extra supplies.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The footbath is central to a quick stop, but available locations vary by season

The Yuzawa tourism guide lists two locations, indoors and outside, for May–November, and indoors only for December–April. Visitor reviews also often mention a footbath after eating; in winter or rain, a towel and protection against wet feet help.

The compact parking area rewards a focused visit on busy days

The official overview gives 13 standard-car and 3 large-vehicle spaces as a guide. When skiing, foliage and Fuji Rock visits overlap, choosing between a meal, shopping and the footbath makes a stop easier than planning a long stay.

Few shops around Mitsumata make late shopping difficult

The Kagura-Mitsumata Tourism Association advises shopping around Echigo-Yuzawa Station before heading up: there are no nearby convenience stores and the roadside station closes in the evening. For an overnight stay, hike or event, use this stop for extra supplies.

Kaido-no-Yu can extend a short station stop into a longer outing

Kaido-no-Yu is generally open 10:00–21:00, with final admission at 20:30, so a bath remains possible after the station closes. After skiing, hiking or foliage viewing, bathing before the drive to Yuzawa interchange can make the journey calmer.

As the seasons change, so does the station's role

Spring through autumn bring Mount Naeba, Mount Tairappyo, river outings and foliage; winter brings Kagura Ski Resort and snowy roads. The station's official activity guide covers foliage, trekking and skiing seasons, with this stop serving for supplies and rest around each trip.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
A warming lunch

Motsuni rice bowl, motsuni set meal, kenchin-style vegetable soup dishes

Good choices after mountain or snowy roads and skiing. Offerings change with season and supplies, so allow alternatives to the restaurant.

A quick filling meal

Chashu pork rice bowl, miso chashu noodles, motsu curry

If seating or lunchtime crowds are a concern, a bowl or noodles can make for a shorter stop before the next destination.

A break for sweets only

Honey soft serve, rich soft serve, coffee

An easy light stop with the footbath or shopping. It also works when you miss lunch or children are not ready for a full restaurant meal.

Take something home

Minamiuonuma Koshihikari rice, Echigo-Yuzawa Koshihikari rice, Echigo sake, pounded mochi rice cakes

Choose souvenirs of rice-growing Yuzawa. In summer, consider cooling and the temperature inside the car; in winter, consider how easily items can be loaded.

Supplies before hiking or an event

Water from Mount Tairappyo, rice-flour oyaki stuffed buns, drinks, outdoor supplies

Useful for forgotten items, but shops nearby are few; do major shopping around Echigo-Yuzawa Station.
