Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Shitara brings together Shitara Town's food, shopping, and culture along National Route 257. On the first floor are Seirei Market, selling local produce and processed foods; Seirei Dining Hall for lunch; and gohei mochi, a local grilled rice cake from Okumikawa. The second floor houses Sekiya Brewery's Horaisen Sake Lab and the Shitara Town Tourism Association. Next door, the Okumikawa Local History Museum even displays a wooden Moha 14 train car from the former Toyohashi Railway Taguchi Line. For a short break, try the market and gohei mochi; for lunch, the dining hall; for half a day, add Damine Castle or Damine Kannon; or head into the woods at Kirara Forest in the Dando Uradani old-growth forest. Eat and shop here, then choose where to go next in Okumikawa's mountain villages.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Eating and shopping lead straight to a taste of Shitara

Seirei Market offers local vegetables, rice, konnyaku, tomatoes, and local sake. Plan around Seirei Dining Hall's short lunch service; Okumikawa's gohei mochi is another reason to stop.

02

Sake Lab and the museum reveal mountain-village life

Sekiya Brewery's Horaisen Sake Lab offers sake-making experiences by reservation. The Okumikawa Local History Museum has folk exhibits and a wooden train car from the former Toyohashi Railway Taguchi Line, connecting the food here with the area's history.

03

A useful planning stop on National Route 257

The station is convenient on the way into Shitara from Shinshiro. Rest and gather information before branching toward Damine Castle, Damine Kannon, Nagura, Tsugu, or Dando Lake.

04

Food takes center stage on event days

Official news covers events such as the ayu sweetfish festival, anniversary programs, and mochi pounding. Check the dates for limited-time events; on an ordinary day, build your visit around the market, dining hall, and gohei mochi.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Short break

Take home a little Shitara in 30 minutes at the market and gohei mochi stand

After parking, browse Seirei Market and pick something from the vegetables, rice, konnyaku, tomatoes, or local-sake souvenirs. If it is outside dining-hall hours, stop for gohei mochi so the break is more than a restroom stop.

Park → Seirei Market → gohei mochi → check your onward route at the tourism association.

Selection changes toward evening, so arrive earlier if shopping is your main aim.

Lunch and rainy days

Make Seirei Dining Hall the lunch stop, then see the museum

If you can arrive before noon, center the visit on Seirei Dining Hall. After eating, visit the Okumikawa Local History Museum and the former Taguchi Line train car display for a taste of Shitara even on a rainy day.

Seirei Dining Hall → Okumikawa Local History Museum → Taguchi Line train car → Seirei Market.

The museum closes on Tuesdays; last admission is around 16:30. Allow for the dining hall's short lunch service.

Weekend drive for adults

Reserve Horaisen Sake Lab for an adult-oriented outing

Sekiya Brewery's Sake Lab offers a sake-making experience by reservation. Decide who will drive, and fit the market and dining hall around your experience time to make the station a destination.

Confirm reservation → Seirei Market → Horaisen Sake Lab → dining hall or nearby sights.

Confirm experience dates, group size, fees, and collection terms in advance.

History lovers and adult travelers

Add mountain-village history at Damine Castle and Damine Kannon

After eating and shopping at the station, head to Damine Castle and Damine Kannon. Some road sections are narrow; visiting in daylight after lunch makes for a calmer trip than squeezing them in toward evening.

Roadside station → Damine Castle → Damine Kannon → roadside station or toward Shinshiro.

Damine Castle closes on Mondays and the day after a public holiday, and is open until 16:00. Allow extra time to drive the mountain roads.

Nature walks

Continue to Kirara Forest for fresh leaves or autumn colors

Kirara Forest in the Dando Uradani old-growth forest is a nature destination for walking among beech trees and by Dando Lake. Lunch and drinks from the station make time in the mountains easier.

Roadside station → north on National Route 257 → Kirara Forest and Dando Lake.

The elevation rises, so watch for winter cold and road conditions. In severe weather, focus on the museum instead.

Minato's notes on eating and shopping

At this station, you may want to browse the market before lunch.

Minato Kosaka sees Shitara as a place to choose Okumikawa food before deciding where to go next. Browse vegetables and local sake at Seirei Market, have gohei mochi for a small snack, and go to Seirei Dining Hall if it is lunchtime. From there, choose the museum, Sake Lab, Damine Castle, or Kirara Forest; shopping becomes part of planning the drive.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for the market, restrooms, and a short food break. Keep the museum visit brief, mainly for the adults.

Avoid the lunch rush; some parts of the visit may be easier carrying a child than using a stroller.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Gohei mochi and the market are easy to enjoy, but attention may fade in the exhibits.

Keep the visit to eating, seeing the train car, and a quick circuit of the market.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

A short stop at the former Taguchi Line train car and the museum adds a memory beyond the meal.

On rainy days, stay mostly indoors; in fine weather, a short station visit may be easier than heading toward Damine.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

Extend the learning to the Okumikawa Local History Museum, Taguchi Line, and Damine Castle.

For a hilltop castle or forest trip, allow time and wear walking shoes.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The official site lists Seirei Dining Hall, Seirei Market, Sake Lab, and the Okumikawa Local History Museum as major facilities

This supports presenting the station as a combined destination for meals, shopping, sake-making experiences, and the museum.

Seirei Dining Hall mainly serves lunch; Seirei Market is listed as open from 9:00 to 17:00

The dining hall's hours may not suit every arrival, so the market and gohei mochi provide alternatives.

The Okumikawa Local History Museum and former Taguchi Line train car display are cultural highlights at the station

They give rainy-day and adult visits an option beyond food.

The Shitara Town Tourism Association lists Damine Castle, Damine Kannon, Kirara Forest, and Tsugu Highland as nearby routes

This supports separate onward routes for history, forest, and highland trips.

Official news carries changing information about the ayu festival, anniversary programs, and mochi pounding

Keep event dates current through the watchlist while using the market and dining hall for ordinary visits.

Several visitor accounts describe narrow roads around Damine Castle

The advice for a hilltop-castle day is to travel in daylight, allow driving time, and check the route at the station.

Kirara Forest calls for different plans in the fresh-leaf and autumn-color seasons and in winter cold

Nature visitors should consider the season and elevation and use the museum as an alternative in severe weather.
