Natsuki's stopover notes

One Shirakawa tea, one keichan chicken item: even 30 minutes makes the stop memorable.

Natsuki Saegusa sees this as a station with separate places to eat and to play. Use Wakuwaku Park Area for a roadside-station stop. If you arrive during morning set or lunch hours, eat at Wakuwaku House; otherwise, choose Shirakawa tea and the keichan chicken series at the shop. Outdoor Area is for a day booked in advance. On a passing visit, finish with shopping and then continue your drive.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Seiryu Shirakawa Cuore no Sato lies on Prefectural Route 62 (the Gero–Shirakawa Line) in Shirakawa Town, Kamo District. It has two areas: Wakuwaku Park Area for meals and shopping, and Outdoor Area for camping and fishing. Official guidance directs roadside-station visitors to Wakuwaku Park Area. Natsuki Saegusa suggests eating a morning set or set meal at Wakuwaku House if the timing works; otherwise, choose Shirakawa tea and the locally made Kurokawa keichan series, seasoned chicken products, at the shop.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Use Wakuwaku Park Area for a roadside-station stop

The station has Wakuwaku Park Area (97-1 Izumi) for food and shopping, and Outdoor Area (181-1 Izumi) for camping and fishing. They are one minute apart by car. Official guidance says both can be used for a toilet break, but directs roadside-station visitors to Wakuwaku Park Area. Park there first on an initial visit to avoid confusion.

02

Take home Shirakawa tea and keichan chicken

The shop sells food and souvenirs including Shirakawa tea, a local specialty. The facility recommends its locally made Kurokawa keichan series, products based on Gifu's seasoned chicken dish. Even if you miss mealtime, you can take home a taste of Shirakawa Town from the shop. Hours are 9:00–17:00, sometimes ending at 16:00.

03

The menu changes with the time of day

Wakuwaku House serves morning sets 9:00–11:00 and lunch, including set meals drawing on local flavors, 11:00–16:00. Because it closes at 16:00 on weekdays and in winter, check the shop first on a late-afternoon visit rather than counting on a meal.

04

A destination station: reserve ahead for activities

Registered in autumn 2012 as Gifu Prefecture's 54th roadside station, the facility describes itself as a destination rather than just a stop along the road. The Outdoor Area, including trout fishing and water play, requires reservations for entry; visitors without one cannot enter. Think of a passing visit as a chance to shop or eat, and reserve ahead for a day of activities.

A short break while traveling on Prefectural Route 62

Take home Shirakawa tea and keichan in 30 minutes

Park in Wakuwaku Park Area, visit the toilets and information corner, then head to the shop. Choose Shirakawa tea or an item from the keichan chicken series to take a taste of Shirakawa Town along on your trip without staying long.

Park in Wakuwaku Park Area → toilets → information corner → shop → depart.

According to the facility, parking for a roadside-station visit (toilet break, dining or shopping) is free for about 30 minutes. Longer stays or overnight parking cost ¥400 per vehicle, for up to one night.

A day planned around a meal

Have breakfast or lunch at Wakuwaku House

Morning sets are served 9:00–11:00 and lunch 11:00–16:00. The lunch choices include set meals featuring local flavors; visit the shop afterward to combine dining and shopping in one stop.

Park → eat at Wakuwaku House → visit the shop → check the surrounding area at the information corner.

Closed Wednesdays (or the following day if Wednesday is a public holiday). It closes at 16:00 on weekdays and in winter; off-season hours may also be shorter.

A day to see a local event distinctive to this station

Visit for the nishikigoi auction

Ornamental nishikigoi carp have been bred in Shirakawa Town since around 1955. The auction is open to spectators, and an auction number ticket (¥1,000) lets you bid. It runs for about two to three hours from noon.

Visit the shop and eat in the morning → watch the auction from noon → head home.

Dates and the number of fish offered may change without notice. Smoking is prohibited at the auction market.

Families with children spending half a day or longer

Reserve the Outdoor Area before a day of activities

Sakana Wakuwaku Park's trout fishing and hand-catching, the grassy open area, camping and cottages are in Outdoor Area. A day-use cottage or bungalow plan also offers indoor space to rest, eat and leave belongings, with a stay from 9:00 to 16:00.

Book online in advance → check in at Outdoor Area → fish or play in the water → shop at Wakuwaku Park Area.

Entry is by reservation only; visitors without one cannot enter. Water play is only for facility users and requires a booking even for a day visit. Trout fishing and hand-catching may close suddenly depending on trout availability.

A day without driving

Travel by public transport

From Shirakawaguchi Station on the JR Takayama Line, take the Odekake Shirakawa (Shirakawa–Higashishirakawa Line) bus for about seven minutes to Cuore no Sato stop, then walk about one minute. The fare is ¥200 per ride; preschool children travel free and elementary and junior high school students pay half fare.

Shirakawaguchi Station → bus, about 7 minutes → Cuore no Sato stop → walk, about 1 minute.

Services are limited and some departures do not run on weekends or public holidays. If the times do not work, consider a reservation-based bus or a special service booked by the previous day.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

For the roadside station, start at Wakuwaku Park Area

Both areas can be used for toilet breaks, but official guidance directs roadside-station visitors to Wakuwaku Park Area. The areas are one minute apart by car and have different addresses and phone numbers, so set your navigation for 97-1 Izumi (和泉97-1).

Understand the parking charge before your visit

General parking in both areas costs ¥400 per vehicle for up to one night. A visit specifically for the roadside station is free for about 30 minutes when using the toilets, restaurant or shop. Plan a quick stop and a longer activity stay accordingly.

Stamp and commemorative ticket availability differ by area

Both areas use the same roadside-station stamp design. The stamp in the Outdoor Area lobby is available 24 hours; the one in Wakuwaku Park Area's information corner is available during opening hours only. Commemorative roadside-station tickets (¥200 each) are sold only in Wakuwaku Park Area.

Reserve activities; fishing also depends on trout availability

The Outdoor Area requires reservations; entry without one is not permitted. Water play is for facility users only and requires advance booking even for a day visit. Trout fishing and hand-catching may close suddenly if trout supplies are unavailable.

Check travel times before adding nearby stops

The official access guide lists Mito no Shidarezakura weeping cherry at 4 minutes by car, Mino Shirakawa Piacere and Yoiichi 41 Mino Shirakawa at 13 minutes, and Oyama Hakusan Shrine at 22 minutes. The former nearby Mino Shirakawa roadside-station hot spring closed in March 2022, so choose another facility if you plan to bathe.
