Taketo's stopover note

Before heading up to Shinhotaka, get your shopping and rest break sorted here.

Taketo Miyasaka sees this as a place to shop and rest before travelling farther into Okuhida. The shop closes at 17:00 from April to October and 16:30 from November to March. You might return too late to buy anything, so pick up sansho pepper and wasabi on the way in. Knowing the parking and toilet arrangements also makes the drive ahead easier to plan.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Shopping and meals together in the heart of Okuhida Onsengo

Near Tochio Onsen on National Route 471, the shop, two restaurants, and car campground share the same site. On the route from Hirayu toward Shinhotaka, you can shop, eat, and take a toilet break in one stop.

02

Okuhida sansho pepper and fresh wasabi are the main draws at the shop

The shop carries Okuhida sansho pepper, Okuhida wasabi, pickled red turnips, Okuhida gohei mochi, and Hida sake; local vegetables are also sold in summer. Sansho, a citrusy Japanese pepper, is available in products such as miso, soy sauce, salt, and dressing to use after your trip.

03

Two restaurants with different regular closing days

Ichisuke serves salt grilled and sliced raw river fish, wild vegetable tempura, Okuhida ramen, and grilled dumplings. Tanuki serves Okuhida shamo chicken and Hida beef dishes. Ichisuke is normally closed Wednesdays, except that it opens daily in summer; Tanuki is normally closed Tuesdays. Often, one of the two is open.

04

Practical details for a rest stop

Parking has 28 car spaces, 6 large vehicle spaces, 1 designated accessible space, and a cycle rack. In addition to separate men's and women's toilets, there is an accessible toilet equipped for ostomates. A smoking area and information corner make this a useful stop before or after a long mountain drive.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A day exploring Okuhida Onsengo

Stock up before heading to Shinhotaka

Buy sansho pepper and wasabi at the shop and eat before heading farther up the valley. You may return after closing time, so shopping on the way in is the safer plan.

Station (shopping and meal) → Shinhotaka area → return journey.

The shop closes at 16:30 from November through March. Weather and road conditions can change travel times in the mountains.

A day when you want lunch at the station

Choose between the two restaurants before you arrive

For river fish, wild vegetable tempura, or Okuhida ramen, choose Ichisuke; for Okuhida shamo chicken or Hida beef, choose Tanuki. Ichisuke is normally closed Wednesdays and Tanuki Tuesdays, so checking the day of the week helps you decide.

Park → restaurant → shop → depart.

Ichisuke opens 10:00–19:00 from April to October and 11:00–17:00 from November to March. Tanuki opens 10:30–17:00 from April to October and 11:00–14:00 from November to March; in winter both open later and close earlier.

A 30 minute stop while passing through

Use it for a brief break on a long mountain drive

Park, use the toilet, check local information at the information corner, and have freshly brewed coffee or a gohei mochi rice cake. An accessible toilet equipped for ostomates is available, and there is a separate smoking area.

Park → toilet → information corner → shop → depart.

Official information does not specify toilet access hours. If you plan to use them late at night, check the signs on site.

An overnight stay in Okuhida

Make the adjoining campground your base

Okuhida Onsengo Auto Campground adjoins the station. Check in starts at 13:00 and check out is by 11:00. You can also add supplies from the station shop to your shopping.

Station (supplies) → campground reception → hot spring areas of Okuhida Onsengo.

In 2026, the campground is open for stays from April 18 through the night of November 7. Reservations are accepted by phone or fax (0578-89-3410) and through its website; website reservations are available around the clock from the relevant booking start date. There are no online reservation slots for Golden Week (spring holidays), summer vacation, or Obon (a midsummer holiday period), so the operator recommends booking early by phone or fax for those periods.
