Aquarium and Misaki Park

Depending on the weather and the children's energy, extend your Onahama outing to half a day.

Family route

Check the toilets and play area before eating to make the day easier

Seafood is central to Onahama's port character. With a family, though, it helps to locate the toilets and Wanpaku Hiroba play area, consider meal options, then plan the market and next stop in one building. In fine weather, add the port and Misaki Park; in rain, choose the building and aquarium. Being able to change plans is a strength here.

1

Before eating

Locate the toilets and seats, and plan for the children's wait.

2

After eating

Visit the market last to shorten the time chilled souvenirs need to be kept cool in the car.

3

While watching the weather

Choose between a port walk, cruise, aquarium and indoor exhibition according to conditions.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Iwaki La La Mew stands directly in front of Onahama Port. In one building, you can visit the seafood market, eat seafood dishes, shop for Iwaki souvenirs, take children to the indoor Wanpaku Hiroba play area, explore Live Iwaki Mewseum, and reach the departure point for the Onahama Day Cruise. It opened as a Michi-no-Eki, or roadside station, in September 2025, adding parking and toilets available 24 hours a day. In good weather, walk by the port and extend your outing to Aquamarine Fukushima or Misaki Park. In rain, combine a meal, shopping, children's play and an exhibition about the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake indoors. Editor Shunsuke Hozumi recommends it as an Onahama base where families with different interests can rearrange lunch, a toilet stop, playtime and their next stop from the same building.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Eat, buy and send seafood from one building

Seafood Market Street, Seafood Gourmet Street and the souvenir street are together, so you can decide on lunch, dried fish for dinner and Joban-mono souvenirs in one visit. If buying chilled goods, it is easier to return to the market at the end.

02

An indoor option for children when it rains

Combine the indoor Wanpaku Hiroba play area, dining, souvenirs and Live Iwaki Mewseum to keep your visit going when the coastal weather turns. With young children, locate the toilets and play area first to make moving around easier.

03

Extend the port visit to an aquarium or cruise

The adjacent Onahama Day Cruise departure point, Aquamarine Fukushima within walking distance, and Misaki Park a short drive away offer more than a view of the sea. Spend fine days outdoors; in rough weather, switch to the building and aquarium.

04

A useful Onahama base since becoming a roadside station in 2025

After its grand opening as a Michi-no-Eki, or roadside station, 24-hour toilets and parking were added, making it more useful as a driving base for the Joban Expressway and Onahama area.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Lunch break in Onahama

Choose a seafood lunch and leave shopping until just before departure

On arrival, choose a few places to eat, then have a seafood rice bowl, sushi or a local seaside set meal before the lunch rush. Walk around the building afterward and choose chilled goods or dried fish at the market just before leaving, reducing the time they need to be kept cool and the time you carry them.

Parking → toilets → Seafood Gourmet Street → souvenir street → Seafood Market Street.

Expect a lunch rush and popular items to sell out; having several meal options makes the visit easier.

Families with children and bad-weather days

Plan a rainy day around the building and Aquamarine Fukushima

Keep the seaside walk short. Eat, shop, play indoors and visit the earthquake exhibition at La La Mew before heading to Aquamarine Fukushima. Parking where you can return to the car for umbrellas or jackets also makes children's changes of clothes and bags easier to manage.

Roadside station → Wanpaku Hiroba play area → lunch → Aquamarine Fukushima.

Aquarium parking can also fill in busy periods. Arriving early is sensible during major holidays and summer vacation.

Days to enjoy the sea breeze

In fine weather, continue to the port, a cruise and Misaki Park

Eat in the building, then check whether the Onahama Day Cruise is operating before heading to the port. If the timing does not work, visit Shioimidai lookout or Marine Tower in Misaki Park for another angle on the sea.

Roadside station → Day Cruise departure point → Misaki Park.

The cruise runs irregularly, and Shioimidai lookout can be windy.

Adults and primary-school-aged children or older

Make time for earthquake history, even on a short visit

Go beyond dining and shopping to Live Iwaki Mewseum on the second floor, where the Onahama coast connects with memories of the Great East Japan Earthquake. For primary-school-aged children and older, it can add a learning experience to the aquarium or port views.

Meal → Live Iwaki Mewseum → walk around the port.

The subject may feel heavy for young children, so consider starting with a short visit.

Before returning to the Joban Expressway

Stop for souvenirs and toilets in the evening

Return after sightseeing to use the toilets, buy drinks and pick up Joban-mono seafood souvenirs. Buying chilled goods at the end also avoids leaving them in the car for long, especially in summer.

Nearby sightseeing → souvenirs at the roadside station → toward Iwaki-Onahama Interchange.

Check closing times and individual shop hours for the day.

People move quickly through the seafood market; avoiding the lunch rush makes carrying a baby easier.

Ages 2–3

Children can move around in Wanpaku Hiroba, making the time before or after a meal easier.

Watch for vehicles and the water on the port side. An indoor-focused visit is more resilient in rain.

On an aquarium day, using the roadside-station toilets and having a snack first makes the trip easier.

Primary-school age
★★★★★

Live Iwaki Mewseum, Aquamarine Fukushima and a sightseeing cruise connect learning with experience.

See the earthquake exhibition with a parent and relate it to the port as it looks today.

Toilets and diaper changes

As a roadside station, it has 24-hour toilets, and there are also facilities for families with children inside the building.

Rainy days

Dining, shopping, indoor play, the earthquake exhibition and a visit to the aquarium provide ways to spend the day.

Strollers

Strollers can be used inside, but the market and dining areas get crowded at lunchtime; shifting your visit time can help.

Waterside

Keep a close watch on children while walking by the port or near the cruise departure point, and mind the wind and footing.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Park near the entrance and use the toilets

The building is large, and you will walk between dining, market and exhibits, so identify a place to rest first.

  2. 2
    Choose a meal before noon

With many seafood choices, pick your first restaurant option before it becomes busy.

  3. 3
Take a short exhibition or port-view break

If you are tired of walking, visit Live Iwaki Mewseum; in good weather, spend a little time by the port.

  4. 4
Buy souvenirs at the market last

Buying chilled goods just before departure makes them easier to handle and shortens the time they need to be kept cool in the car.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

West Plaza

An outdoor venue for events such as monkey performances and Jangara Nenbutsu Odori, a local Buddhist folk dance. Events may change or be canceled in rain or strong wind.

South Rest Area

Sometimes used for Minatomachi Pro Wrestling and stage events. On busy days, allow for crowded walkways and competition for places to rest.

First-floor Information Desk

Often the pickup point for gifts, shopping vouchers and discount vouchers. Arrive early for first-come offers.

Citizens' Gallery

See exhibitions in a short visit; easy to include on a rainy day or after a meal.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Keep more than one lunch option in mind

Many visitors come for seafood, and choosing a restaurant can be difficult at lunchtime on weekends. Consider sushi, set meals, barbecue or snacks as well as seafood rice bowls, so hungry children need not wait while you decide.

Return to the market last for easier shopping

Buying fresh seafood or chilled gifts early means keeping them cool in the car for longer. Walk around the building first, then return to the market street just before leaving.

Indoor options matter most in rain or extreme heat

The port and Misaki Park are pleasant in good weather, but wind, rain and summer sun can make lingering outside difficult. La La Mew's indoor play area, dining, souvenirs and exhibitions let you shorten the outdoor part of the trip.

Plan parking early on an aquarium day

Official guidance notes that parking around Aquamarine Fukushima can get crowded during major holidays and summer. If you eat a leisurely meal at the roadside station before moving on, allow for parking waits and the aquarium's afternoon last-admission time.

Even a short visit to the earthquake exhibition is worthwhile

Alongside food and souvenirs, second-floor Live Iwaki Mewseum shows memories tied to Onahama's coast. Consider a short visit together, suited to the children's ages.

Event days change the best shopping order

For anniversary events and Fish Day offers with receipt thresholds and first-come gifts, when you buy things affects which benefits you can receive. If an event is your goal, read the entrance notices before eating or shopping.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Basic opening hours are 9:00–18:00, but restaurants, the indoor play area and cruise have different hours or operating days.
  • Full-building closure days in 2026 are set month by month. Check official opening information before visits around summer vacation, public holidays or New Year.
  • Parking is listed for 430 vehicles in total. Allow extra arrival time on major event days or when the aquarium is busy.
  • If buying chilled or frozen souvenirs, leave a cooler bag in the car before visiting the market street.
  • Portside walks, the cruise and Misaki Park are affected by wind. With young children, leave room to shorten outdoor time.
  • Live Iwaki Mewseum is an easy place to add a short learning stop between eating and shopping.
