Nearby
Yokoyama Fudoson or Yanaizu Kokuzoson

These temples are a short drive from the station, connecting Tsuyama's woodcraft with its cedar-lined temple grounds.

Kashiwagi Tabito's detour notes

Decide the order of play, restrooms, food and woodcraft first.

A rushed shopping stop would miss much of this station. With children, use the restroom on arrival, head to the wooden play equipment if the weather is clear, then eat at Kiriguchi or shop at the farm stand, and finish with woodcraft at Mokumoku House. On a rainy day, shift the route indoors and you can still enjoy Tsuyama cedar and Tome flavors.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Tsuyama, known as Mokumoku Land, is a woodcraft-focused roadside station on National Route 45. Browse arrow-feather-patterned crafts made from Tsuyama cedar at Mokumoku House, choose wasabi and seasonal vegetables at the farm shop, and try aburafu-don or hatto hot pot at Kiriguchi. Aburafu is dried, deep-fried wheat gluten served over rice; hatto is a local dish of hand-stretched flour dough. Large wooden play equipment and an outdoor square let children burn off energy while adults take turns shopping. The station is easy to reach from the Monou-Tsuyama interchange on the Sanriku Expressway and makes a useful stop before or after a drive toward Minamisanriku, or on a short Tsuyama outing to Yokoyama Fudoson or Yanaizu Kokuzoson.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Woodcraft is a reason to visit, not just a souvenir

Tsuyama is a town of forests and cedar. At Mokumoku House, browse arrow-feather-patterned crafts, wooden toys and household goods made from Tsuyama cedar. Even on a short stop, locally made objects beyond food leave a lasting impression.

02

Children can play while adults take turns shopping

The outdoor rural park has large wooden play equipment and a square. On a clear day, letting children use some energy before eating or shopping can make the drive more comfortable. Restrooms, food and play equipment are all on the same site, which is useful for families.

03

Find Tome flavors in both the restaurant and farm shop

Kiriguchi offers aburafu rice bowls and hatto hot pot; the farm shop offers seasonal vegetables, wasabi, pickles, okowa sticky rice and simple sweets. Even without eating at the restaurant, you can take home a taste of Tome from the farm shop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short break on National Route 45

In 30 minutes, circle the restrooms, farm shop and woodcraft

After parking, use the restroom, browse woodcraft at Mokumoku House and choose a vegetable or pickle at the farm shop. Even without time for a meal, you can experience both Tsuyama cedar and Tome flavors.

Parking → restrooms → Mokumoku House → farm shop → departure.

The farm shop and Tokimeki Shop may close earlier on some days. If you arrive late in the afternoon, shop first.

A break for toddlers through elementary-school children

With children, visit the play equipment before eating

On a clear day, start with the large wooden play equipment in the rural park. Then go to Kiriguchi for an aburafu rice bowl or noodles, or pick up a snack at the farm shop, so children spend less time sitting.

Restrooms → wooden play equipment → Kiriguchi or farm shop → Mokumoku House.

The outdoor play equipment is exposed to sun, wind and rain. Bring water in summer, dress warmly in winter, and focus on woodcraft and food when it rains.

Days when outdoor play is impractical

On a rainy day, focus on woodcraft and local food

When you cannot spend long in the rural park, make Mokumoku House's woodcraft and wooden toys and Kiriguchi's local food the main stops. You can still enjoy the warmth of wood indoors.

Mokumoku House → Kiriguchi → farm shop → car.

Craft classes and workshops take place only on certain dates. Check the official blog and events listings if one is your main reason to visit.

An adult walk or a short family outing

With half a day, connect the cedar town to Yokoyama Fudoson

Eat and shop at the station, then drive to Yokoyama Fudoson. After seeing Tsuyama cedar crafts, the cedar-lined approach and historic temple add another dimension to your visit to Tsuyama-cho.

Michi-no-Eki Tsuyama → Yokoyama Fudoson → return to National Route 45.

Temple visits involve steps and outdoor walking. With small children or after rain, keep the visit short and do not overexert yourselves.

A drive on the Sanriku Expressway and National Route 45

Shop before heading toward Minamisanriku

Close to the Monou-Tsuyama interchange, the station is a convenient break before or after heading toward Minamisanriku. Use the restroom, pick up a snack and organize your woodcraft souvenirs before continuing toward the coast.

Monou-Tsuyama interchange → Michi-no-Eki Tsuyama → National Route 45 or the Sanriku Expressway.

Lunch can take longer on holidays, and events may keep the parking area and play area busy. If you are in a hurry, focus on the farm shop and restrooms.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Restrooms, indoor shopping and short breaks are practical. Outdoor play mostly means carrying the child.

The outdoor square is exposed to sun and wind. Keeping meals brief and combining farm-shop snacks with a break in the car may ease the visit.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

A short run around the wooden play equipment and square is possible.

The equipment is large, so adults should stay close when children climb up or down. On rainy days, switch to looking at wooden toys and crafts.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Large wooden play equipment, grass and a snack make an especially useful combination at this age.

Playing before eating may help children settle at the table. Check whether the equipment is hot in summer and how cold the wind feels in winter.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

They can enjoy the equipment and extend their interest to woodcraft and Yokoyama Fudoson.

A woodcraft workshop or storytelling event, when scheduled, adds to the visit. Wear shoes suited to walking if you also visit a temple.

Restroom route

A multipurpose restroom is listed. Using the restroom soon after arrival before heading to the play area avoids doubling back.

Outdoor play

The wooden play equipment and square are the main attractions. In rain, strong wind or extreme heat, focus on indoor woodcraft and food.

Food

Kiriguchi's local food is appealing, but it closes on Wednesdays and its hours may change or end early. Farm-shop snacks offer another option with children.

Shopping

The site makes it easy for one adult to stay by the play equipment while others browse woodcraft and the farm shop.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Wooden play equipment anchors a family break

Reviews and family-travel information often praise the outdoor equipment and square. During a long drive, some families may find that a short run before eating makes shopping and meals easier.

The restaurant offers Tome dishes; the farm shop offers seasonal flavors

The restaurant is the place for aburafu rice bowls and hatto hot pot. Wasabi, wild vegetables, summer vegetables, new rice and pickles bring the seasons into the farm shop. Separating lunch from shopping makes even a short stop satisfying.

On holiday lunchtimes, allow for more than a restaurant visit

With the play equipment, woodcraft and farm shop, you can change the order if there is a wait at the restaurant or closing time is near. With children, leave room for play; adults can head to woodcraft and the farm shop.

On rainy days, plan around indoor woodcraft and food

When outdoor play is difficult, make a short circuit of Mokumoku House, the restaurant and farm shop. Wooden toys and dishes give you something to see indoors.

Knowing about the rebuilding after the 2019 typhoon adds context

Mokumoku Land was damaged by the October 2019 East Japan Typhoon, operated from temporary premises for more than three years, and reopened in renovated form in 2023. The restored woodcraft facilities and park also reflect the community's resilience.

Follow seasonal products through summer and winter farm-shop packs

The official blog announced a summer vegetable pack in July 2026. Corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant and pickles make seasonal shopping a reason to visit.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The station-wide basic hours are 9:00–17:00. Kiriguchi restaurant is listed as 10:00–16:00 and closed every Wednesday; Tokimeki Shop is listed as 10:00–16:00.
  • Tome City lists 128 car spaces, 10 large-vehicle spaces and two spaces for disabled drivers. The official facility guide also lists 140 spaces for 24-hour parking, so use the city figures as a planning guide.
  • A separate listing says the Tokimeki Yasai farm shop closes on Thursdays. Check the latest official or city information when going specifically for vegetables.
  • The wooden play equipment is outdoors. Watch for direct summer sun, winter wind and the ground after rain; if conditions are poor, switch to indoor woodcraft and food.
  • The station is a short detour from the Monou-Tsuyama interchange via National Route 45. It suits a restroom, snack and souvenir stop before or after a trip toward Minamisanriku.
  • When adding Yokoyama Fudoson or Yanaizu Kokuzoson, consider the ground underfoot and children's energy, and use the station restroom first.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A Tome-style meal at the restaurant

Aburafu rice bowl, hatto hot pot, handmade soba noodles

Consider Kiriguchi if you will be here at lunchtime. The aburafu rice bowl is a recognizable Tome specialty, while hatto hot pot suits cold or rainy days.

The official facility guide lists Kiriguchi as open 10:00–16:00 and closed every Wednesday from November 2025. It may close early for operational reasons.

Seasonal finds at the farm shop

Spring wild vegetables, wasabi, summer vegetables, autumn new rice and winter root vegetables

Tome City's local-produce information describes distinct seasonal crops. Buying one vegetable to use at home lets the journey linger.

Another listing says the Tokimeki Yasai farm shop closes on Thursdays; check the latest information when shopping for vegetables is your main purpose.

A flexible option for children

Okowa, miso rice balls, simple sweets and soft serve

If children are too young to settle at a restaurant, a quick meal or snack from the farm shop or light-meal counter may make it easier for the family to return to the play area.

For gifts

Arrow-feather-patterned woodcraft, Tokimeki packs and wooden toys

This station offers woodcraft as gifts as well as vegetables. Check the shop's guidance for shipping and stock.

Change the order when busy

Woodcraft browsing, farm shop and outdoor play

You can rearrange woodcraft, the farm shop and playtime instead of relying on the restaurant alone. If children get restless, visit the play area first; adults can take turns shopping.
