How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First, on arrival
Decide whether to eat or head for the lake first

Meals at Porotopia are served from 10:00 with last orders at 15:00. If lunch is the goal, eating first makes the rest of the visit easier.

If you want to eat
Shijimi ramen made with Lake Ogawara clams

Shijimi soup and processed clam products let you take a taste of the lake home, too.

If you want to shop
Nagaimo yams, garlic, local vegetables, and processed lake foods

Farm produce and local products are generally sold 9:00–17:00. Shop earlier for a better choice of seasonal items.

With children
Make a short sequence of toilets, koi pond, footbath, and food

The footbath is free and open 10:00–16:00. Bring a towel to dry off before returning to the car.

In fair summer weather
Visit Ogawarako Park for swimming and shijimi gathering

Swimming is listed for July 1–August 31, 9:00–17:00. Shijimi must be gathered by hand only.

In rain or winter
Focus on indoor shopping and the adjacent hot spring

Fureai Village has different operating conditions in winter, and use of its play equipment is restricted. An indoor plan is more comfortable than forcing outdoor play.

The order of a family visit

Decide when to eat, and the day falls into place

At Ogawarako, the restaurant, farm shop, footbath, and lakeside activities are close enough to make choosing among them difficult. Decide first whether to have lunch or go to the lake. Give children a short break at the koi pond or footbath. Then extend the visit to the park in summer, a hot spring in rain, or Fureai Village on a camping trip, according to everyone's plans.

1

Food

Make shijimi ramen and the farm shop your first reasons to stop.

2

With children

Link the koi pond, footbath, toilets, and soft serve into a short break.

3

Lakeside

In fine summer weather, extend the visit to Ogawarako Park or Fureai Village.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Ogawarako makes it easy to eat, shop, and play a little on a lakeside drive through Tohoku Town. At Restaurant Porotopia, try ramen made with Yamato shijimi clams from Lake Ogawara. The farm shop offers nagaimo yams, garlic, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, shijimi clams, shirauo icefish, wakasagi smelt, and more. Families can take a short break at the koi pond or footbath, then visit Ogawarako Park, Ogawarako Fureai Village, or the hot spring at the adjacent Lake Ogawara Exchange Center if time allows. In fair summer weather, swimming in the lake and gathering shijimi are also options. Snow and cold change the plan in winter, when a stop inside the station and a hot spring visit make an easier combination.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Shijimi ramen tastes like a lake-country specialty

Restaurant Porotopia's main attraction is shijimi ramen made with Yamato shijimi clams from Lake Ogawara. It also offers a set meal of rice with raw egg, beef tongue curry, children's dishes, and soft serve, so family members with different tastes can eat together. Lunch orders end relatively early; decide whether to eat before or after lakeside activities.

02

Shop for local vegetables and lake produce together

Alongside local nagaimo yams, garlic, carrots, tomatoes, and spinach, the farm shop stocks lake foods and processed products centered on shijimi clams, shirauo icefish, and wakasagi smelt. It is useful for planning dinner at home as well as buying souvenirs.

03

For a short break, try the koi pond and footbath with children

Feeding the koi in the pond on the grounds is popular, and the Shijimi-yu footbath and handbath are free to use. These are short-stop facilities; even about ten minutes outside between the toilet, shopping, and a meal can refresh a drive.

04

With more time, add Ogawarako Park or a hot spring

Around the station are Ogawarako Park for lake swimming and shijimi gathering, Ogawarako Fureai Village for camping and play equipment, and a natural hot spring at the adjacent Lake Ogawara Exchange Center. Extend the station stop into lakeside activities according to the weather and children's energy.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Lunch stop on Prefectural Route 8; drives around Kamikita, Misawa, and Noheji

For lunch, go from shijimi ramen to the farm shop

Head first to Restaurant Porotopia. Have shijimi ramen made with Lake Ogawara clams, a rice-and-raw-egg set meal, or beef tongue curry, then look for nagaimo yams, garlic, and processed lake foods at the farm shop. If you miss meal service, the station becomes mostly a shopping stop, so the order matters around lunchtime.

Parking area → Restaurant Porotopia → farm produce and local products → information desk

Last orders for meals are at 15:00. Allow time for seating and ordering on busy holiday afternoons, with soft serve or shopping as alternatives.

Families with preschool or elementary-school children; breaks on long drives

With children, change the mood with ten minutes outside

After the toilet, visit the koi pond, footbath and handbath, then have soft serve. This is a convenient quick break rather than a station for extended play on large equipment. For more active play, head to Ogawarako Park or Fureai Village.

Outdoor toilets → koi pond → footbath and handbath → soft serve

The suggested footbath visit is about ten minutes per person. Bring a towel for wet feet, supervise young children, and watch your footing in winter.

Family summer holidays; a half day by the lake

In summer, continue to swimming and shijimi gathering

After lunch and shopping at the station, go to Ogawarako Park. In July and August, lake swimming, gathering shijimi by hand, canoe experiences, and fireworks at the Lake Festival make the lake the focus. Pack changes of clothes and towels in the car to make moving between station and shore easier.

Roadside station → Ogawarako Park → swimming and shijimi gathering → hot spring

Follow the designated swimming area, lifeguards' instructions, weather, and wind conditions. Tools are not allowed for shijimi gathering.

Rainy drives, winter breaks, or trips with grandparents

On rainy or winter days, finish with a hot spring

When staying outdoors is difficult, shop for shijimi products and vegetables at the station and have a warm meal. Then consider the natural hot spring at the adjacent Lake Ogawara Exchange Center or another day-use hot spring in town. Fureai Village often has conditional winter operations, so check reservations and facilities before adding it.

Roadside station → Lake Ogawara Exchange Center → hot spring in town

Closing days, prices, and last admission vary by hot spring. On snowy days, give priority to parking and the drive home rather than adding too many stops.

Stays at Ogawarako Fureai Village, camping, or cabin use

On camping days, plan provisions and a hot spring first

Before heading to Fureai Village, pick up vegetables, processed foods, light snacks, and tourist brochures at the station. Decide when to visit a hot spring around check-in at the cabins or campsite so the evening feels less rushed. Water supply and toilet conditions change in winter; the station and hot spring make practical supply stops.

Roadside station → Ogawarako Fureai Village → hot spring → return to the station for extra shopping

Fureai Village has conditions for operating seasons, reservations, pets, and winter facilities. Check its official calendar for your stay.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Suited to toilets, preparing for nursing or diaper changes, and a short break

Keep meals and shopping brief rather than spending a long time at the station. At the footbath, take care when carrying a baby and guard against falls.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Refresh with the koi pond, soft serve, and footbath

Supervise children near the water and footbath. Keep a towel and spare clothes easy to reach.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Settle in at the station, then continue to Ogawarako Park or Fureai Village

Summer swimming, shijimi gathering, and camping are strong options for this age group. On rainy days, a hot spring can be a better choice.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

Turn swimming, shijimi gathering, camping, and a hot spring into a half-day outing

Do not use tools to gather shijimi. Follow the designated swimming area and lifeguards' instructions, and watch the wind and water temperature by the lake.

Toilets

A good first stop on a long drive. Watch your footing on the outdoor route in winter or at night.

Meals

Children's curry and children's lunch sets provide choices besides shijimi dishes.

Outdoor play

The koi pond and footbath suit a short stop. For extended play, go to the park or Fureai Village.

Rainy days

Instead of lingering outdoors, combine the station with the Lake Ogawara Exchange Center or another hot spring in town.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Check restaurant hours first

If lunch is the purpose, plan your arrival around the 15:00 last order.

  2. 2
Buy heavy items at the farm shop last

If buying nagaimo yams or processed foods, waiting until after a lakeside walk makes them easier to manage in the car.

  3. 3
    Finish with a hot spring

Adding the Lake Ogawara Exchange Center or another hot spring in town before the drive home makes a rainy or winter visit more satisfying.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Community hall

This indoor gathering space hosts limited-time shops, sales, art displays, and local fairs. You may come across an event even on a rainy day.

Spacious grounds

Outdoor events such as food truck festivals have been held here. On event days, allow more time for parking and meals.

Ogawarako Park

The lakeside area takes center stage in summer, with the Lake Festival, swimming, shijimi gathering, and canoe experiences.

Ogawarako Fureai Village

A base for camping or outdoor play, with cabins, broad lawns, play equipment, and weekend winter operations.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

At peak lunch time, leave options besides shijimi ramen

Shijimi ramen is the draw, but the restaurant's last order is at 15:00. On a busy day, eating first, shopping while you wait, or taking a light break with soft serve gives the family more flexibility.

The farm shop brings field vegetables and lake foods together

Alongside Tohoku Town vegetables such as nagaimo yams and garlic are processed shijimi, shirauo icefish, and wakasagi smelt products. The mix gives a sense of the region. If buying chilled products, decide whether to shop before or after lakeside activities.

Treat the footbath as a short break

The footbath and handbath are free, with a suggested visit of about ten minutes. They are for a quick change of pace with children or a break from driving, rather than a long hot spring soak. Keep a towel easy to reach in the car.

Summer by the lake rewards preparation

Ogawarako Park offers swimming and shijimi gathering in July and August. A bag for wet items, spare clothes, sun protection, and a plan for windy days make it easier to move between the station and lakeshore.

On rainy days, switch from outdoor play to a hot spring

Tohoku Town has many day-use hot springs, and the Lake Ogawara Exchange Center immediately next to the station is one option. A short route of meal, shopping, and hot spring is easier for families with children or grandparents than staying outside.

Fureai Village has different conditions in winter

Winter operating days, available facilities, toilets, and play equipment at Fureai Village differ from the green season. Snow play and winter camping may appeal, but the roadside station is a practical place for supplies and a switch to a hot spring.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • If visiting for lunch, plan your arrival around the restaurant's 15:00 last order.
  • On a footbath day, keep a towel where you can reach it quickly.
  • For swimming or shijimi gathering, pack a bag for wet items, spare clothes, and sun protection in the car.
  • Gather shijimi only with bare hands; do not use tools.
  • Fureai Village's operating days and facility conditions change in winter. For lodging or snow play, follow its official guidance.
Food

Eating and shopping

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Taste the lake's specialty

Lake Ogawara shijimi ramen / special shijimi ramen / shijimi clam soup

The best way to taste what sets this station apart. If you came for the flavor of shijimi clams, compare a bowl of ramen with take-home clam soup.

Last orders for meals are at 15:00, with service from 10:00. If arriving outside mealtime, switch to soft serve or shopping.

Find choices for the whole family

Rice with raw egg set meal / beef tongue curry / fried chicken set meal / children's curry / children's lunch set

These choices help families eat together when a child dislikes shijimi or an adult wants a substantial meal. They also make a short meal stop easier to arrange.

At busy times, leave room to shop or use the footbath before or after eating rather than relying on a quick restaurant visit.

Take a sweet break

Aoi Mori milk soft serve

Even without a full restaurant meal, soft serve offers a short break with children. It is an easy stop before or after lakeside play.

Soft serve is generally sold 9:30–17:00. In winter or rough weather, consider when to return to the car.

Shop to take home

Nagaimo yams / garlic / carrots / tomatoes / spinach / shijimi clams / shirauo icefish / processed wakasagi smelt

Bring home produce from Tohoku Town's fields and Lake Ogawara. If you plan to cook dinner, look at vegetables and processed lake foods together to plan the meal.

The farm shop is generally open 9:00–17:00. Stock varies with the season and time of day.

Pick up supplies before camping

Local vegetables / processed foods / prepared dishes / drinks / snacks before or after the hot spring

Useful for extra supplies before going to Fureai Village or the lakeshore. Filling gaps at the station before entering the campground means less driving in the evening.

Plan another shop for full camping equipment or late-night supplies; do not rely entirely on the station.
