Akari’s stopover notes

Browse vegetables, try farm ice cream, and glimpse Towada craftsmanship.

Akari Tsukioka sees this station as a stop for Towada produce, sweets, and workshops together, as well as lunch. Browse the seasonal farm shop, pause for farm ice cream, and, if time allows, visit the Takumi workshops or downtown Towada. A Route 4 rest stop naturally becomes a chance to take something local home.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Towada is a roadside station on the Towada Bypass where a rest stop can include direct-from-farm vegetables, farm ice cream, Towada soba, Restaurant Shiki, Nanbu sakiori weaving, and kimigara slippers. To enjoy its mix of farming, food, and craftsmanship, browse seasonal produce, pause for a sweet, then visit the Takumi craft workshops or outdoor play area if time allows. It suits a drive through Towada City or from Hachinohe or Shichinohe-Towada, rather than a lakeside stop just before Lake Towada.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

See Towada produce and sweets in a short visit

The Center House farm produce section is generally open 9:00–19:00. Browse nagaimo yams, garlic, apples, seasonal vegetables, and processed foods, then try farm ice cream made with Towada-grown Osuzu soybeans and Masshigura rice. Even a short rest stop can include a taste of the area.

02

Choose a restaurant, soba, or food counter for lunch

Typical hours are 11:00–15:00 for Restaurant Shiki, 10:30–15:00 for Towada Soba, and 11:00–17:00 for the Shunkashuto food counter. Choose a seated lunch, a quicker bowl of soba, or a more takeaway-oriented stop.

03

Add craft workshops and outdoor play to your shopping stop

Nanbu sakiori weaving, kimigara slippers made from corn husks, and processing of local produce into dumplings, tofu, and bread can be hands-on options when advance booking and day-of-week conditions allow. Outside are a large playground, a park with benches, 24-hour toilets, and parking—useful for a break with children.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short 20–40 minute break

Pick up vegetables and farm ice cream on a Route 4 break

After parking, use the 24-hour toilets, then browse seasonal vegetables and processed foods in the farm shop. Even outside meal times, farm ice cream is generally available 10:00–17:00, so shopping and a sweet stop can bring a little Towada flavor to your journey.

Parking → toilets → farm shop → farm ice cream → departure

When buying fresh produce in summer, consider the temperature inside your car and the time until you get home. A cooler bag widens your choices.

A lunch break from Hachinohe or Shichinohe-Towada

Time your stop for lunch and enjoy Towada food in one place

Keep Restaurant Shiki, Towada Soba, and the food counter in mind so you can adjust to lunchtime crowds and your companions’ appetites. Afterward, visit the farm ice cream counter, Café GRIN, and the local specialty shop for food and shopping in one stop.

Parking → meal → farm ice cream or café → local specialty shop → farm shop

Restaurant Shiki is generally closed on Thursdays; Café GRIN on Mondays and Thursdays. Adjust your meal choice to the day.

Families with preschool and elementary-school children

Let children play and reset during the drive

The large outdoor playground and park with benches let children play before a meal or after eating and before returning to the car. In wet weather, switch to the free indoor rest area and shopping.

Toilets → playground → meal or farm ice cream → farm shop

In winter or rain, plan around indoor rest and a short shopping stop rather than relying on outdoor play.

A half-day detour or an adult stroll around Towada

Explore local crafts, then continue to downtown art

When conditions suit, Nanbu sakiori weaving, kimigara slippers made from corn husks, and local food processing can make this a hands-on craft stop. Even without an activity, look around the Takumi workshops before heading to the Towada Art Center or Towafuru for a route linking farming, crafts, and art.

Activities differ by day, time, group size, and advance booking requirements. Check official details when making them part of your itinerary.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★★☆

The nursing room, diaper-changing table, and rest area make a short care stop easier.

Aomori Prefecture tourism information lists a nursing room, diaper-changing table, baby carts, baby chairs, and children’s tableware. Keep nursing, changing, and shopping together in a short stop.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Outdoor play can break up travel fatigue; use indoor rest in rain or winter.

The large playground is a strength in fine weather. Watch children’s hands among the many farm-shop displays, then move on to farm ice cream or a short meal.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Play equipment, farm ice cream, and watching crafts offer variety.

Children can play outside before a meal, then have farm ice cream afterward. Add a hands-on activity only when its booking conditions fit.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Nanbu sakiori weaving and kimigara slippers offer a way to discuss local crafts.

The history of horse breeding in Towada City and local food processing can add regional learning to the shopping stop. For a half day, continue to Komakko Land.

Craft events are sometimes held in spring in the roadside station parking area. Dates change each year; check Aomori Prefecture tourism information or the official social media for current details.

Sweets and coffee fairs

Official news has reported past Towadapia Sweets Fair and Towada Coffee Festival events. On food-event days, stalls and limited products add shopping options alongside the usual meals.

Autumn harvest and anniversary events

Harvest and anniversary celebrations have been held in autumn, when the farm shop has seasonal produce. On busy days, consider a lighter meal and focus your purchases on vegetables, sweets, or processed foods.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A Route 4 food and shopping stop, not a lakeside base just before Lake Towada

The address is in Denpoji (伝法寺) in southern Towada City, some distance from the shore of Lake Towada. Plan to pick up vegetables and sweets while traveling between Hachinohe, Shichinohe-Towada, and central Towada, rather than expecting a lakeside rest stop.

Farm ice cream works well when you miss meal hours

Farm ice cream is generally available 10:00–17:00 and uses Towada-grown soybeans and rice. If restaurant lunch hours do not fit, or children cannot wait until a meal, it makes a short sweet break.

Plan workshop activities in advance

Nanbu sakiori weaving, kimigara slippers, and local produce processing have different days, times, capacity limits, and advance application rules. On an unplanned visit, focus on browsing or shopping; arrange an activity ahead when it is a purpose of the trip.

Snow and heat change how to use the outdoor areas

In southern Aomori winters, account for snow and icy roads and make toilets, rest, and shopping the focus rather than outdoor play. In summer, take care with fresh produce and car temperatures; autumn is a good season for harvest shopping.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Sales areas are generally open 9:00–19:00, while meal areas are broadly 11:00–15:00. Individual outlets have different hours and closing days.
  • Restaurant Shiki is generally closed Thursdays, and Café GRIN Mondays and Thursdays. Check the day if lunch is your main purpose.
  • Nanbu sakiori weaving, kimigara slippers, and local produce processing activities differ in booking times, capacity, and advance application rules.
  • Do not assume the station is on the shore of Lake Towada. Plan it as a stop for central Towada or a Route 4 drive.
  • In summer, a cooler bag helps when taking home nagaimo yams, garlic, fruit, and vegetables.
  • In winter, prioritize road conditions and a short rest rather than making outdoor play the main purpose.
