Mugine's Nanae notes

Parking and toilets around the clock; shopping and snacks until 18:00. An easy stop to plan into a Hakodate drive.

Editor Mugine Sawatari sees Nanairo Nanae as an especially easy rest stop to fit into a trip between Hakodate and Onuma. Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station is about 10 minutes away by car, parking and toilets are available 24 hours, and the farm stand and Tōgeshita Terrace operate from 9:00 to 18:00. With those three things in mind, you can choose shopping or a snack to suit your arrival time. Guarana soft serve and apples give you a reason to taste Nanae itself.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Guarana soft serve is available only at this station

Co-up Guarana, a soft drink popular in Hokkaido, is made by Obara in Nanae. The company's guarana soft serve is a signature item at Tōgeshita Terrace. Nanae apple soft serve and Nanae milk soft serve are also ¥350 each.

02

Choose seasonal fruit and vegetables at a farm stand in apple country

Nanae was the first town in Japan to practice Western-style farming and cultivate Western apples. The farm stand carries local vegetables, rice, and apples (in season from around October). The souvenir area stocks gifts from Nanae, southern Hokkaido, and the wider region, plus the station's original apple curry and long green onion curry.

03

Parking and toilets are open around the clock, even on night drives

Parking for 148 cars and 23 large vehicles, and the toilets, are available 24 hours. Indoors are free Wi-Fi, a kids' area, a nursing room, and a diaper-changing area. The women's toilets have a powder area.

04

The neighboring THE DANSHAKU LOUNGE makes this a two-part stop

Next to the station is a complex named for Baron Ryokichi Kawada, associated with the Danshaku potato variety. It has about 500 exhibits, a wood-fire restaurant, a shop, and takeaway food. You can shop at the station and walk next door for a meal.

Travel via Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station

Stop before or after a Shinkansen trip

About 10 minutes by car from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. Pick up souvenirs and a snack before heading to Hakodate or Onuma, or buy Nanae apples and vegetables on the return trip.
