How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First, on arrival
Take a break at the toilets and tourist products shop

Parking is listed at about 74 passenger cars and five large vehicles. On a long drive, finding the toilets and a place to rest before shopping makes the stop easier.

If the railway is running
Make Rikubetsu Railway the main event

It operates seasonally from spring to autumn. Rides and pedal trolleys are easy to enjoy even on a short visit; check reservation slots in advance for the train driving experience.

For a sweet break
Head to the soft serve ice cream shop

Seasonal operation is generally from late April to the end of October. Mondays are normally closed, so a day that works for the railway may not work for ice cream.

On a rainy or cold day
Learn about the town at the Seki Kansai Museum

Because it is inside the station building, this detour is less affected by weather. You can learn about Rikubetsu's settlement history in a short visit.

If staying until night
Continue to the Galaxy Forest Observatory

It is about a 10-minute drive from the roadside station. Hours change by season, and Mondays and Tuesdays are normally closed. The live camera can help you assess the sky.

In winter in Rikubetsu
Plan for the cold

Around the Shibare Festival, plan for road conditions, clothing, and the time needed to return. The roadside station can anchor your breaks. Shibare refers to the intense local cold.

Highlights

Aurora Town 93 Rikubetsu is not a roadside station defined by the amount of shopping it offers. The former Rikubetsu Station building brings together a tourist products shop, Aurora House lodging, the Rikubetsu Railway, and the Seki Kansai Museum. A rest stop on National Route 242 can become an experience distinctive to Rikubetsu. Summer brings soft serve ice cream and railway activities; at night there is the Galaxy Forest Observatory; in winter the biting cold itself becomes a travel memory. Start with parking and the toilets, then check opening hours to plan anything from a short break to a half-day detour.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A break at the former station immediately feels like Rikubetsu

This hub makes use of the former Rikubetsu Station on the Furusato Ginga Line. Even a brief stop at the shop puts the tracks and rolling stock close by. If the timing works, you can move on to a Rikubetsu Railway ride or a pedal trolley. The roadside station and railway sharing one site is its clearest distinguishing feature.

02

Shopping and sweets are modest in scale, but the reason to stop is clear

This is not a sprawling farm market. It suits a stop to choose Rikubetsu souvenirs at the tourist products shop and, from spring through autumn, add a sweet break at the soft serve ice cream shop. Rather than aiming only for a meal, combine shopping and a break before or after a railway visit or a trip to the observatory.

03

The night sky and winter deepen the impression of Rikubetsu

A short drive uphill takes you to the Galaxy Forest Observatory. Summer nights bring stars; in winter, the severe cold itself becomes a focus of the trip. Rikubetsu is known as Japan's coldest town, so even for a brief winter stop, check your clothing and the road surface before setting out. Preparation is part of enjoying the visit without overdoing it.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive toward Ashoro or Kitami

Turn a break on National Route 242 into a railway memory

Instead of making this only a toilet stop, look at the platform and rolling stock around the former Rikubetsu Station before going into the products shop. Even on a short visit, a quick look around the shop and station building is worthwhile.

Parking lot → 24-hour toilets → tourist products shop → station building and surroundings.

This stop works best when you combine rest, local products, and a railway visit rather than expect a large dining facility.

Rail enthusiasts, children who like vehicles, and elementary school age visitors and older

From spring through autumn, make the Rikubetsu Railway the purpose of the trip

On days with train rides, pedal trolleys, and driving experiences, the roadside station becomes a destination in itself. Short rides and trolley trips are approachable for families; plan driving experiences around available slots and eligibility rules.

Check your timing at the tourist products shop, then head to the Rikubetsu Railway by its registration time.

The railway operates seasonally. The operator lists Tuesday closure except during Golden Week, while the town's roadside station guide also lists Wednesday. Weather and events can change the schedule, so check the railway calendar before a railway-focused visit.

A short cultural detour or a day when the weather turns

On rainy days or an adults' trip, discover local history at the Seki Kansai Museum

The museum devoted to Seki Kansai, known as a pioneer of Rikubetsu's settlement, is inside the station building. Adding around 20–30 minutes to a shopping and toilet stop gives the town's reputation for cold a human history.

Tourist products shop → Seki Kansai Museum → station building and surroundings.

It is generally closed Mondays, the day after public holidays, and over New Year.

Stargazing, astronomy, and a summer evening detour

If you can stay until night, continue to the Galaxy Forest Observatory

After arranging food and a toilet break at the roadside station, drive about 10 minutes to the Galaxy Forest Observatory. It opens until 22:30 in summer, making an evening at the station followed by a night at the observatory possible.

Aurora Town 93 Rikubetsu → Galaxy Forest Observatory.

Stargazing depends on the weather. Mondays and Tuesdays are normally closed, and event days can change both crowd levels and opening hours.

The Shibare Festival and a winter drive in eastern Hokkaido

In winter, choose a warm retreat before seeking out the cold

Rikubetsu's winter cold is itself a travel talking point. On days heading to the Shibare Festival or the observatory in winter, use the roadside station for toilets, a warm place, and a break before or after meeting up.

Break at the roadside station → event grounds or Galaxy Forest Observatory.

Even short distances can take unpredictable time on winter roads. Prioritize daylight for the return, suitable clothing, and vehicle equipment.

Weather may cause cancellations.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or under
★★☆☆☆

A toilet break and brief look around the station building can work well.

At this age, prioritize plans for warmth, feeding, and diaper changes rather than make the railway experience the main aim.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Seeing the trains up close can be a welcome change of pace.

For pedal trolleys and train rides, check operating days and the requirement for an accompanying adult, and keep the visit comfortably short.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Children who like vehicles can get a lot out of the former station and pedal trolley.

There will be time outdoors, so consider sun exposure in summer and gloves and footing in winter.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

This is an age at which it is easy to include a Rikubetsu Railway ride, pedal trolley, Seki Kansai Museum, and observatory.

The S-course train driving experience is for elementary school age visitors and older and has a height guideline, so check its eligibility conditions.

Stroller

It can work mainly inside the station building. Carrying a child or walking may be easier around the tracks or outdoors in winter.

Rainy day

Instead of insisting on an outdoor railway activity, a short visit to the products shop and Seki Kansai Museum is more practical.

Winter day

Even a short walk outside can feel severe. Get children's gloves, hats, and footwear ready first.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Choose parking early

The roadside station lists 74 passenger car spaces, but attractions cluster around the station building. On a busy day, prioritize walking distance and safe footing rather than wandering through the lot.

  2. 2
    Toilets and products shop first

During a long drive, finding the toilets and somewhere warm before shopping makes the stop more comfortable.

  3. 3
    Keep outdoor walks short

Railway visits and winter events are enjoyable but exposed to wind and cold. Walk with a return to the station building in mind.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Former Rikubetsu Station grounds

A center for spring-to-autumn events and activities such as Rikubetsu Railway rides, driving experiences, and pedal trolleys.

Galaxy Forest Observatory

The place to look for night events centered on the sky, including astronomical observing sessions and the Starlight Festival.

Rikubetsu Town Event Grounds

The winter Shibare Festival venue. Plan to drive from the roadside station and check cold-weather preparations and traffic information.

Tourist products shop

A base for the stamp, tourist information, local products, and rest. It is also useful for meeting up or filling time before and after events.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Seen as a small roadside station, its appeal is easy to understand

This is a place to connect the former station building, local products, toilets, and railway activities in a short visit, rather than a large farm market or dining facility. A visit may be brief without a specific goal but much longer with a railway activity or museum stop.

For railway fans, arriving at the station can itself mean reaching the destination

Rikubetsu Railway offers more than viewing: train rides, pedal trolleys, and driving experiences. Families can start with short activities that do not require booking, while adult railway enthusiasts can center a trip on a reservation-based course.

Even with many parking spaces, where you park changes the visit

The station lists 74 passenger car spaces, but visitors cluster near the station building and tracks. On busy or event days, think about walking distance in advance. At night or in winter, also consider footing and which way the car faces.

For sweets, pay attention to the seasonal schedule

Visitors often mention the soft serve ice cream, but the shop operates from late April to the end of October and is listed as closed on Mondays. If you are coming for ice cream, check its hours separately from the railway's schedule.

A satisfying night depends on including the observatory, not just the roadside station

Rikubetsu is strongly associated with stars and low temperatures. Before visiting the observatory, use the roadside station for toilets and drinks; then you can wait comfortably until dark. On a cloudy day, leaving room for another activity may make the trip more enjoyable.

In winter Rikubetsu, even a short outdoor walk affects the itinerary

Events such as the Shibare Festival celebrate the cold, but on winter roads it is better to judge a trip by time and energy than distance. The roadside station can serve as a break before and after an event; plan warm clothing and the return journey first.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The tourist products shop closes at different times in April–October and November–March. Stamp use follows the shop's hours.
  • In 2026, Rikubetsu Railway operates seasonally through October 31, and the operator lists every Tuesday as closed. Rides and pedal trolleys run mainly on the second and fourth weekends; check booking arrangements for driving experiences, as the S course gives priority to reservations but may also accept same-day applications. Match the activity and date on the operating calendar before planning your visit.
  • The soft serve ice cream shop operates from late April to the end of October and is generally closed on Mondays. Check before setting out if sweets are a main reason for your visit.
  • Galaxy Forest Observatory is about a 10-minute drive from the roadside station. Stargazing depends on the weather, so check its live camera or updates and leave time to switch to the museum or a rest stop if it is cloudy.
  • In winter, road surfaces and wind matter as well as temperature. For the Shibare Festival or a night visit to the observatory, decide on warm clothing, gloves, shoes, and return timing in advance.
  • The EV rapid charger and Michi-no-Eki SPOT Wi-Fi are listed as available 24 hours a day. Allow about 30 minutes per charging session.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Make it a sweet break

Soft serve ice cream shop

On a spring-to-autumn drive, it is an easy way to add a taste of Rikubetsu without making a full meal stop.

It operates seasonally and is generally closed on Mondays. The guide gives longer opening hours in August.

Buy something to take home

Rikubetsu souvenirs at the tourist products shop

This is a stop for choosing local goods quickly rather than browsing a large farm market. It fits easily before or after the observatory or railway.

The selection varies with the season and time of day.

Use a little waiting time before the railway

Products shop / soft serve ice cream / station waiting area

These give companions a place to rest before or after registration for the Rikubetsu Railway.

The railway's operating days and the soft serve ice cream shop's closing days are different.

Get ready before an evening at the observatory

Toilets / drinks / warm clothing

This is a good final break before the observatory. The shop may be closed at night, so get what you need earlier.

In winter or at night, keeping time outside the car short can make the visit easier.

Plan meals separately in the surrounding area

Town restaurants / accommodation / a meal along the route

Rather than count on the roadside station alone for lunch, plan a meal in town or along your route and use the station as a base for rest and activities.

Restaurants in Rikubetsu may have limited opening days and hours.
