How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First thing when you arrive
Look at the toilets and direct sales store first

The parking area has space for 44 standard cars. On busy days, choose a parking spot before making a short circuit of the facilities. Toilets are available 24 hours.

If you want to buy it and take it home
Uryu rice and seasonal agricultural products

As a station known for its rice production, it sells both rice itself and processed rice products. Summer is also the time to see melons, corn, and watermelons.

If you feel hungry
Uryu Rice-age, rice ice cream and yakitori

Wait a few minutes for a freshly fried snack, cool off with ice cream, or add something savory with yakitori, grilled skewers. You can enjoy the station without a long stop.

If heading to the wetland
Check the nature museum and trail information first

The wetland opening date, bridge, boardwalk work, parking and drinking-water conditions can change. Follow the town’s latest hiking information.

If you are bringing children
Shop briefly, enjoy a sweet treat, then head to a park

The station does not center on large playground equipment, so it suits a short break. If children need to run around, continue to Uryu Town Memorial Park.

To refresh before heading home
Bathe at Ikiiki-kan

After a wetland visit or town event, Ikiiki-kan, a few minutes away by car, offers a place to wash off sweat and ease fatigue.

Asakura's note

This station works best when you choose the order of your stops

At Denen no Sato Uryu, start with the toilet, then browse the farm shop. If you want a snack, choose fried fish cake or ice cream; if heading for the wetland, visit the nature museum. Checking the size of the car park, seasonal hours and changing wetland conditions first helps you get more from this small station.

short time

Take a 20-minute break for the toilet, processed rice products, and ice cream or Uryu Rice-age.

shopping

Browse new rice, rice flour, rice crackers and seasonal vegetables, then take heavy purchases back to the car.

wetland

Highlights

Denen no Sato Uryu is no sprawling, showy roadside station. Yet its Uryu rice, Shokan melons, Uryu rice ice cream and freshly fried Uryu Rice-age speak naturally of a town shaped by rice farming and wetlands. It makes an easy restroom stop on National Route 275 when driving from the Sapporo or Takikawa direction. Visitors heading for Uryunuma Wetland can first get a sense of its seasons and trails at the nature museum. It is a practical place to combine a break, shopping, a snack and wetland information.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Shopping reflects the character of a rice-growing town

The farm shop sells rice flour, senbei rice crackers, noodles and sweets made with Uryu rice. The focus shifts from wild mountain vegetables in spring to watermelon, corn and Shokan melon in summer, then pickling vegetables and newly harvested rice in autumn. Even a brief shopping stop offers a taste of the season.

02

Freshly fried snacks and ice cream make a satisfying short stop

Suzuki Kamaboko Shop says it fries Uryu Rice-age, a rice-enriched fried fish cake, after each order. At Aisu-kan, Uryu rice ice cream and seasonal melon flavors are attractions. Even without sitting down for a restaurant meal, it is a satisfying break along the highway.

03

The nature museum introduces Uryunuma Wetland

At the Uryunuma Nature Museum inside the station, photographs and exhibits show the wetland through the seasons. The experience of hiking there varies greatly with the season and road and trail conditions. Even before setting out, the museum helps you understand the landscape you are going to see.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Driving from the Sapporo or Takikawa area toward Hokuryu or Numata

Turn your break on National Route 275 into rice shopping

It is worth doing more than using the restroom. Look for Uryu rice and processed rice products in the farm shop, plus melons and corn in summer. Even without time for a large attraction, you can take something characteristic of Uryu Town home.

Along National Route 275. The location makes it easy to incorporate from the Takigawa IC direction.

With space for 44 standard cars, choosing a spot that allows a quick visit helps on event days and during harvest season.

Taking a snack break, taking children with you, driving outside of lunch time

Enjoy fried snacks and ice cream without a sit-down meal

Uryu Rice-age, shrimp and octopus fried fish cakes, rice ice cream, melon ice cream and yakitori make the stop memorable even without a full meal. The driver can choose something savory, the children ice cream, and the household processed rice products.

Browse the farm shop, then visit Aisu-kan, Suzuki Kamaboko Shop and Yakitori Club.

Fried food and outdoor snacks depend on opening hours, regular closures and sellouts. Check official information when you have a particular item in mind.

Wetland hikes, flower-season drives and nature reconnaissance

Gather information and prepare your mind before heading to Uryunuma Wetland

Uryunuma Wetland is a substantial mountain destination farther inland from the station. Viewing the photographs and displays at the station’s Uryunuma Nature Museum makes this stop an introduction to the town that protects the wetland, rather than just a waypoint on the drive to the trailhead.

Denen no Sato Uryu → Uryunuma Nature Museum → Uryunuma Wetland Gate Park.

In 2026, the wetland opened June 22; boardwalk work began in August. The trail from Mount Minami-Shokanbetsu toward Mount Shokanbetsu is closed this season. Follow the town’s current hiking information.

People who want to buy rice and people who want to attend local events

Make the station your destination during the New Rice Festival and Autumn Harvest Day

The Autumn Harvest Thanksgiving and New Rice Festival gives rice shoppers a reason to make the station their destination. This usually quiet highway stop takes on a different character on event days, with shopping, activities and stalls.

On event days, check the official event page and the town's event announcements, and it will be easier to shop if you go in the morning.

Dates, hours and activities may change with weather or organizer announcements. After an event has ended, plan an ordinary shopping visit instead.

Bringing preschoolers, elementary school students, traveling long distances

Keep the station stop short, then let children play in a park

The station is strong on shopping and snacks. For longer play, a park is easier. After a sweet snack, head toward Uryu Town Memorial Park or Ikiiki Genki Village for a change of pace for both parents and children.

The park closes or is affected by snow in winter. Check the season before planning outdoor play.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★☆☆

A baby changing bed is listed inside the women’s toilet, which can help with a short break.

This is not a large indoor play center. Plan around feeding, changing diapers and resting in the car.

2-3 years old
★★★☆☆

Ice cream and a short shopping stop can provide a change of pace at this age.

For active play, leave room to move to a nearby park instead of staying at the station too long.

4-6 years old
★★★☆☆

You can have fun choosing what you want to eat, such as melon, ice cream, and fried foods.

Uryunuma Wetland involves a real mountain hike. Consider each child’s stamina and the weather before adding it.

Primary school children
★★★★☆

Viewing the wetland, plants and animals at Uryunuma Nature Museum before exploring nearby gives the stop an educational angle.

If adding a hike or park visit, plan for drinks, suitable shoes, insect protection and perhaps a bath on the way home.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Park in a location where you can easily return to your car in a short time.

The station has spaces for 44 standard cars. On event days or when shopping may take longer, parking near the facilities can reduce the walking load.

  2. 2
See restrooms and opening hours first

Toilets are available 24 hours, but shops and snack stands close at different times by season. In winter, aim to arrive before the general 16:00 closing time.

  3. 3
Plan heavy purchases, starting with rice

Rice and melons are heavy to carry. It's easier if you decide how much to buy first and then move on to ice cream and fried foods.

  4. 4
Add a bath on the way back from the wetland

Ikiiki-kan is a few minutes away by car. Bathing and resting before heading home can ease fatigue after a wetland hike or event.

Event

Spaces used for events

Roadside station event space

The station hosts shopping and food events including Uryu Marche, the Oishii! Early Summer Festival, the Autumn Harvest Thanksgiving and New Rice Festival, and anniversary celebrations.

Specialty product direct sales facility

New rice, processed rice foods and seasonal vegetables come to the fore here. Watch for seasonal arrivals and sales even outside event days.

Uryu Town Memorial Park

Venue for Uryu Shokan Festa. On days with stage shows and fireworks, shop at the roadside station before continuing into town.

Uryunuma Wetland Gate Park

Trailhead area for wetland hikes. Opening dates, parking, drinking water and trail work directly affect whether a visit is possible.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

It is used as a small roadside station surrounded by rice fields.

Reviews give the impression that the station is located a little away from the center of town, along the national highway, and in a rice field area. It's not too big, but it has a museum and direct sales facilities, and it's a place where you can easily get a feel for Uryu even if you take a break for less than an hour.

Rice crane games and rice events give the station character

Official social media and town promotional videos feature activities involving Uryu rice and rice scooping. The station turns the character of a rice-growing area into something playful, beyond simply selling vegetables.

Fried kamaboko is a break, including the waiting time.

Suzuki Kamaboko Shop says it fries items after they are ordered. Uryu Rice-age, shrimp and octopus fried fish cakes can be the focus of a short break. Waiting a few minutes and eating them hot suits the station better than rushing to eat in the car.

A wetland is not an extension of a station, but requires preparation for a mountain.

Uryunuma Wetland is compelling, but cannot be visited before the mountain season opens, and boardwalk work, trail closures and drinking-water conditions vary by year. Enjoy the museum at the station, but base any hike on the town’s current trail information.

The reason for visiting changes in summer and fall.

Summer brings ice cream, melons, the wetland and Shokan Festa; autumn brings new rice and harvest events. The reason to stop changes with the season, and event days can make the station a destination.

A bath and park make family visits easier

Instead of trying to play at the station for a long time, move to Ikiiki-kan or Memorial Park for a bath, rest or outdoor play. With eating and shopping at the station and active time nearby, the day has more variety.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The official site lists general facility hours of 9:00–17:00 in March–July and September–October; until 18:00 on May 2–6, July weekends and holidays, and in August; and 10:00–16:00 in November–February.
  • The Hokkaido Roadside Station Association lists parking for 44 standard cars and 10 large vehicles and says the station stamp is available around the clock.
  • The official site says its EV rapid charger ceased operation on April 1, 2026 because of aging equipment and that there are no plans to install a replacement.
  • Before heading to Uryunuma Wetland, check the town’s official page for opening dates, trails, parking, drinking water, vending machines and bear reports.
  • For 2026, Uryunuma Wetland opened June 22. The first parking lot closed July 27 but reopened August 6. Boardwalk repairs were scheduled to start August 17. The trail from Mount Minami-Shokanbetsu to Mount Shokanbetsu is closed for the 2026 season. Check the town’s latest notice.
  • On summer event and New Rice Festival days, expect the station car park and nearby roads to be busier than usual; arriving early helps.
  • If children want extended active play, move on to Uryu Town Memorial Park or Ikiiki Genki Village instead of lingering at the station.

The focus of the farm shop changes from spring through autumn: melons and corn in summer, newly harvested rice and pickling vegetables in autumn.

make a meal

On days when you have time, you can also sit down at a restaurant instead of having a snack. This is a way to enjoy rice at a roadside station with your meal.

The restaurant's business hours are different from those of the roadside station itself, and the business hours are shorter in the winter.
