How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First thing on arrival
Look for lily bulb sweets and bread

The Pure White Lily Bulb range, croquettes, and Pao Pao Bakery make a short stop worthwhile.

For lunch
Choose a snack or the hotel restaurant

You can eat at the shop or head next door for lily bulb kakiage soba at the restaurant.

With children
Add the museum or park

The Naumann elephant exhibits and, in season, outdoor play in the park offer a break from driving.

In winter
Plan for shorter hours and snowy roads

The roadside station closes at 17:00 from December through March. Check operating information if adding the onsen or ski area.

Exploring nearby
Start with places within walking distance

The museum, onsen, and park are close; Maruyama Observatory and Shirogindai Ski Area are additional drives.

Michika's detour notes

After lily bulb sweets, go one step farther for the Naumann elephant or onsen.

Michika Shiraishi sees Chūrui as a station that offers several small reasons to eat. It is not a large market, but cream puffs, daifuku, and croquettes made with lily bulbs, bread, Doro-buta pork, and the onsen restaurant suit different appetites. With the Naumann elephant museum and onsen so close, it feels a shame to stop only for the restroom.

Sweets

The Pure White Lily Bulb series is a way into Chūrui's story. First see what the shop has today.

Lunch

For a light bite, choose bread and a croquette; for a sit-down meal, head to the Hotel Arco restaurant.

Extra time

The museum, onsen, and park are close enough to extend your stay according to weather and children's ages.

Highlights

Roadside Station Chūrui, near National Route 236 and the Chūrui Interchange of the Obihiro–Hiroo Expressway, makes it easy to eat, shop, play a little, and finish with a hot spring bath in one area. At the shop, look for the original Pure White Lily Bulb cream puffs and daifuku (soft mochi sweets), croquettes, Doro-buta pork products, and fresh bread from Pao Pao Bakery. Tokachi Naumann Onsen Hotel Arco is next door; the Chūrui Naumann Elephant Museum and Naumann Park are within walking distance. Editor Michika Shiraishi recommends it as a South Tokachi driving stop where you can pick up sweets, a hot spring bath, and a story about the Naumann elephant together.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Take home Chūrui lily bulbs as sweets or savory snacks

Chūrui's lily bulbs appear not only as produce but also in easy-to-try Pure White Lily Bulb cream puffs and daifuku, shiratama zenzai soft serve (soft serve with mochi balls and sweet red beans), and croquettes. Even on a brief stop, you can choose a taste distinctive to this station.

02

Bread, hot snacks, and an onsen restaurant give you lunch options

Choose among Pao Pao Bakery inside the shop, the takeaway counter, and Restaurant Kyōri Chūrui in the neighboring Hotel Arco. You can also keep lunch light with just bread and sweets instead of planning entirely around the restaurant.

03

An elephant museum and onsen can turn a short stop into half a day

The Chūrui Naumann Elephant Museum, Naumann Park, and Tokachi Naumann Onsen are within walking distance. Allow about 20 minutes for shopping, an hour if you add the museum, or half a day with the onsen or park.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Travel between the Obihiro and Hiroo areas

A sweets break on a South Tokachi drive

Along National Route 236, with ample parking, you can quickly choose lily bulb sweets, bread, and hot snacks. Even without a full lunch, you can take home a taste of Chūrui.

Chūrui Interchange or National Route 236 → roadside station shop → restrooms and nursing room → back on the road.

In winter the station closes at 17:00. The selection of limited items and bread changes with the time of day.

Primary school children, rainy days, very hot days

An hour to make the Naumann elephant memorable for children

After buying sweets at the shop, walk to the Chūrui Naumann Elephant Museum. The story runs from the accidental 1969 fossil discovery to a reconstructed skeleton. It also works when rain or heat makes the park less appealing.

Roadside station → Chūrui Naumann Elephant Museum → shop for gifts.

The museum is generally closed on Tuesdays; last admission is 15 minutes before closing.

Long drives, before or after camping, winter breaks

A half-day detour ending at the onsen

Add a day-use bath at Tokachi Naumann Onsen Hotel Arco and the shopping stop can become the end of your outing. Lily bulb kakiage soba or a Doro-buta pork dish at the restaurant lets you combine food and rest in one area.

Roadside station → Restaurant Kyōri Chūrui → day-use onsen bath.

Check the official updates for bath reception deadlines, restaurant last orders, and temporary closures.

Days when children need to move around

Choose the park in summer or Shirogindai in winter

Naumann Park offers play equipment, water play, and lawns; in winter, the sledding competition and slope information at Shirogindai Ski Area become seasonal draws. Switch outdoor destinations with the season.

Roadside station → Naumann Park or Shirogindai Ski Area → onsen.

The park, campground, and park golf course have operating seasons. Check road conditions in winter too.

Clear weather, photos, a short scenic stop

Add a viewpoint before heading home

At Maruyama Observatory, you can briefly see Chūrui's townscape, the Hidaka Mountains, and toward the Pacific Ocean. A short drive up after eating gives a broader view of South Tokachi than the roadside station alone.

Roadside station → Maruyama Observatory → return to National Route 236.

The town guide says the road is narrow and steep and the entrance hard to find. Avoid pushing on after sunset or in bad weather.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

Restrooms, a nursing room, and vending machines are available 24 hours a day, making this suitable for a short break. Keeping to the shop and a rest is easier than trying to fit in the museum and onsen too.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

There are familiar light foods such as bread, soft serve, and croquettes. The park's water play and equipment are appealing in season; watch for road crossings and weather, and keep the visit short.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

The large Naumann elephant exhibit, park equipment, and sweets work well together at this age. Eating and then moving around a little can break up a dull drive.

Primary school age
★★★★★

Explore the 1969 fossil discovery, reconstructed skeleton, mammoth tooth, and fossil footprints. In winter, Shirogindai Ski Area and the sledding competition can also be destinations.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Bread is prominent and offers an option outside lunch hours

Pao Pao Bakery has its own introduction on the official site, and travelers' comments also highlight the bread selection. It works when restaurant hours do not fit, when children want a snack, or for buying breakfast for the next day.

The museum is a good alternative on rainy or very hot days

The Chūrui Naumann Elephant Museum has a reconstructed skeleton, the excavation story, and even an elephant theme in the building. Within walking distance of the station, it offers an indoor destination when outdoor play is difficult. Primary school children and older can explore the excavation story too.

The onsen and restaurant extend a stay, but their hours differ

Hotel Arco's day-use baths remain open into the evening, while the restaurant closes between lunch and dinner. If you want to shop, eat, and bathe in one visit, decide the order first to avoid arriving during a break.

Maruyama Observatory suits clear days, not nights or bad weather

The town guide praises the view but also says the road is narrow and steep and the entrance hard to find. It is a nearby scenic detour from the station whose suitability depends on the weather and daylight.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Look at the shop soon after arrival for lily bulb sweets and bread. Expect fewer choices later in the day.
  • The roadside station opens 9:00–17:00 in winter. If adding the onsen or restaurant, check bath reception and restaurant last orders too.
  • For a museum visit, check the usual Tuesday closure and last admission. There are exceptional openings during Golden Week and local school summer holidays.
  • Naumann Park's water play and campground are seasonal. Bring spare clothes in summer; consider Shirogindai Ski Area in winter.
  • The road to Maruyama Observatory has narrow, steep stretches; make it a brief detour in clear daylight.

Sweets distinctive to Chūrui

Useful if you arrive outside lunch hours or children cannot wait for the restaurant. Bread has a prominent place in the shop and is also part of local shopping.

A full meal

Restaurant Kyōri Chūrui / lily bulb kakiage soba / Doro-buta hamburger curry

A lunch or dinner anchor when visiting the onsen. The restaurant closes between lunch and dinner, so plan your timing.

Choose local products and Naumann elephant souvenirs at the same shop. Consider your journey home when buying frozen or limited products.
