Mio's Itoman notes

Take care of the children's toilets first, then shop for vegetables, fish, and souvenirs. Simply choosing the order makes it easier.

Mio Ichinose recommends Michi-no-Eki Itoman as a southern market where a family can manage different interests. Take a break at the information center, look at seasonal vegetables and fruit at Umanchu Market, then choose lunch at the Fish Center or Yukura. You can switch to indoor plans when it rains or go on to Bibi Beach when it is clear, making room for children's needs and adults' shopping in the same day.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Itoman brings together Umanchu Market, Okinawa's first JA farmers' market, Itoman Fish Center, the Yukura Itoman local products center, and an information center. Browse freshly harvested vegetables, mangoes and passion fruit, sashimi and seafood rice bowls made with nearby-caught fish, Okinawa soba, and sweet souvenirs. It works especially well for lunch and shopping before heading home, as well as a break on a southern Okinawa drive. A nursing room, diaper-changing station, ostomate-equipped toilet, and covered dining space help families pace a visit in rain or heat.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Produce, seafood, and souvenirs in one place

Umanchu Market sells local specialties including bitter melon, carrots, acerola, passion fruit, and mangoes. At the Fish Center, choose among sashimi, seafood rice bowls, nigiri sushi, and tempura made with nearby-caught fish. Yukura has Okinawa souvenirs and a food court, so family members with different interests can stay close together.

02

Lunch choices beyond seafood

Whether you eat sashimi or a seafood rice bowl at the Fish Center, you can switch to Okinawan dishes, ramen, tempura, or light meals at Yukura. Sales areas and seats can get busy at lunchtime on holidays, so choosing a child-friendly option in advance makes the visit easier.

03

Plan your southern Okinawa outing at the information center

The information center provides visitor and road traffic information and leaflets. It also has a nursing room, diaper-changing station, accessible toilet, ostomate facilities, and wheelchairs. Families driving with children can use the toilets and plan their next stop before shopping.

04

Continue to Bibi Beach, Kukuru Itoman, or Himeyuri

After eating and shopping at the station, head to Bibi Beach on a clear day, Kukuru Itoman when rain or heat makes indoor plans preferable, or the Himeyuri Peace Museum for a learning visit. These stops let you combine Itoman's sea, food, and peace history at a manageable pace.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

The last day of a trip, before returning a rental car

Shop for Okinawan food and souvenirs before returning to the airport

About 20 minutes from Naha Airport by ordinary roads, the station is an easy final stop after sightseeing in southern Okinawa. Choose fruit and vegetables at Umanchu Market, sweet souvenirs at Yukura, and seafood to eat on site at the Fish Center, gathering both meals and take-home items in one visit.

Information center toilets → Umanchu Market → Yukura → Fish Center → toward the airport

For fresh or chilled food, consider cooling, your flight departure, and the rental-car return time.

Families and groups of friends visiting for lunch

Make seafood lunch the focus, with seating and relief from the heat in mind

At Itoman Fish Center, enjoy choosing sashimi, seafood rice bowls, nigiri sushi, or tempura from different shops. On busy days, consider takeout, covered tables, or Yukura's food court so children need not wait too long.

Park → browse lunch options at the Fish Center → if seating is difficult, go to Yukura → souvenirs

Sales areas and seats tend to be busy at holiday lunchtimes, during summer vacation, and on event days.

Families with infants or toddlers; rainy days

With children, start at the information center and break the visit into short stages

The information center has a nursing room, diaper-changing station, and ostomate-equipped toilet. Settle practical needs there before shopping. Rather than planning a long play session at the station, alternate short spells of shopping, eating, and resting; if everyone still has energy, continue to Bibi Beach or Kukuru Itoman.

Information center → brief visit to Umanchu Market → meal → indoor venue or seaside

The event plaza is exposed to sun, rain, and wind. In summer, favor indoor stops.

Elementary-school children and older; adults driving in southern Okinawa

Combine Itoman's sea and peace history in half a day

After lunch and shopping at the station, spend the afternoon at the Himeyuri Peace Museum or Peace Memorial Park. A lively market visit and time to learn about Itoman's history make for a more thoughtful visit to the south.

Roadside station → Himeyuri Peace Museum → Peace Memorial Park

The museum calls for a quiet visit. Keep the visit shorter with small children.

Families with children aged 4 or older; a seaside break

Add outdoor time at Bibi Beach on a clear day

Bibi Beach Itoman is a short drive from the station. After eating and shopping, you can walk by the sea, swim during the swimming season, or reserve a barbecue for more time outdoors in southern Okinawa.

Lunch at the station → Bibi Beach → souvenirs at Yukura before heading home

Check the swimming season and hours, parking fees, strong winds, and thunderstorms before deciding.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The tourism association lists hours by facility and parking capacity

The information center, Umanchu Market, Fish Center, Yukura, and Bannai have separate hours; check the time for the particular facility you plan to visit.

JA introduces Umanchu as Okinawa's first farmers' market

Local production and consumption, freshly harvested produce, and regional specialties are central to Umanchu Market. It is a farm-direct market close to local everyday cooking, as well as a place to shop for gifts.

Fish Center hours and closing days vary by shop

The Okinawa Prefecture Fisheries Federation lists 10:00–19:00, New Year closures, and Monday closures for some shops. The tourism association also lists 9:00–18:00 on weekdays and 9:00–19:00 on weekends and public holidays. Check the individual shop before a seafood-focused visit.

Okinawa Story notes possible weekend queues at Umanchu Market

Queues may form even before opening on weekends. Go in the morning if farm-direct produce is your priority, and keep an alternative in mind if you are visiting mainly for lunch.

Visitor reviews often describe a half day of seafood, produce, and souvenirs

Travel reviews praise the range of seafood, sashimi, tempura, vegetables, and souvenirs, while also mentioning summer heat and holiday crowds. Break up your visit with rests and moves between areas rather than assuming a long uninterrupted stay.

The information center also has a nursing room and road traffic information

With children, stop at the information center before meals and shopping. Its information can also help when rain, an approaching typhoon, or road restrictions affect plans.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Umanchu Market is easier to visit early on weekends.
  • Hours and closing days differ among Fish Center shops; check official information if seafood is the main purpose of your visit.

  • When a typhoon approaches or heavy rain is forecast, check road traffic information and temporary changes at each facility.
  • Before a peace-history visit, eat and use the toilets at the roadside station so you can travel on calmly.
