A weekend drive crossing Kagoshima and Miyazaki on Prefectural Route 2
Take a lunch break while driving between Miyakonojo and Kirishima
Arrive during Restaurant Kirara's lunch service for a filling meal such as simmered pork cartilage, fried chicken, or chicken nanban. If you miss lunch, choose deli dishes, bread, fukuregashi steamed cake, and yuzu products at the farm shop, separating car snacks from things to take home.
A stop on Prefectural Route 2 linking Sueyoshi-Takarabe Interchange, Takarabe Station, and the Miyakonojo area.
Relying only on the restaurant makes timing critical. If you expect to arrive around 14:00, plan a shopping break instead.
A day for buying dinner ingredients, gifts, and local foods to take home
Do your Takarabe shopping first
Takarabe rice, vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, tea, Kurobuta pork, Japanese Black beef, yuzu drinks, and seasonings give you plenty of local food to take home. Produce labeled with growers' names and homemade deli dishes feel closer to everyday shopping than standard tourist souvenirs, and are useful once home.
Circle the farm shop on arrival; leave heavy rice and meat purchases until last.
Popular deli dishes and seasonal goods can run low as the day goes on. Morning to late morning usually offers more choice.
Summer waterside time, a short walk outdoors, and a change of pace for children
Cool off at Okawara Gorge after eating
After eating and shopping, head to Okawara Gorge for its valley, Kirihara Falls, and the waterside at the campground, a taste of Osumi's scenery. Families who would spend only a short time at the station can turn the trip into a half-day outing.
Allow about 20–30 minutes by car from Michi-no-Eki Takarabe toward Okawara Gorge.
Follow seasonal, closure, and restricted-area notices for the campground and river. After rain, check footing and water levels and do not push on if conditions are poor.
A short adult sightseeing trip, photography, and a cool detour
Make a borderland nature circuit of a cave and waterfall
Mizonokuchi Cave is an imposing large cave shaped by groundwater in the Shirasu volcanic plateau, with a different atmosphere even in hot weather. Cross the prefectural border to Sekinoo Falls to see the waterfall and the upstream pothole formations—rounded hollows carved into the riverbed. This route adds the landscape itself to your food and shopping stop.
Michi-no-Eki Takarabe → Mizonokuchi Cave → Sekinoo Falls.
Some ground inside and outside the cave and around the falls can be slippery. Choose walking shoes over sandals.
