Highlights

Roadside Station Kunino Matsubara Osaki on National Route 220 brings together Centro Land lodging and baths, a local produce shop, a restaurant, a dog run, an RV campsite, and the lawns of Osaki Fureai no Sato Park. Instead of rushing through a meal or shopping stop, stretch after parking, browse Osumi black-haired wagyu beef, black pork, vegetables, and souvenirs, then add a bath or park visit if time allows. Kunino Matsubara Campground and Yokose Kofun burial mound are easy extensions by car. The station suits breaks with children or dogs and time between ferry journeys. The facility called Asuparu Onsen is a heated-water bathhouse; the operator says its water is not from a natural hot spring.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A practical Route 220 stop with baths and meals

The grounds include a produce shop, baths, lodging, a restaurant, and a bathhouse canteen. Have lunch at the restaurant, use the canteen from the afternoon, or visit the baths in the evening; the options change with your arrival time.

02

Stretch your legs at the lawn park and dog run

Adjacent Osaki Fureai no Sato Park has an event square, a play area, and a Japanese garden; the operator also lists a dog run and event square. Families and visitors with dogs can make time outdoors instead of stopping at the shop alone.

03

Nearby pine groves, camping, and an ancient burial mound

Osaki Town describes the coastal Kunino Matsubara grove as white sand and green pines; there is a campground and the summertime Masumaru Pool. Yokose Kofun is a nationally designated historic site. You can fit a short history stop after the baths or spend half a day by the coast.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short break on National Route 220

Restrooms and shopping in 30 minutes

After parking, use the restroom, then briefly browse vegetables, processed foods, and souvenirs at the produce shop. Even outside meal hours, soft serve or takeaway items offer a taste of Osaki. This works well between Kanoya and Shibushi.

Parking → Restrooms → Produce shop → Departure

More vehicles may be staying during events and on Sunday at lunchtime. For a shopping-only stop, keep the visit short and plan the baths or park separately.

Adults taking a break or filling time before or after a ferry

Ease into half a day, from lunch to the baths

If you arrive in time, eat at the lunch restaurant first; if you arrive later, use the bathhouse canteen. Then warm up in the Asuparu baths and choose dinner supplies or souvenirs at the produce shop. The station can serve as a small base for a longer stop.

Restaurant or bathhouse canteen → Asuparu baths → Produce shop

Bath and canteen hours and closures can vary by day. Check same-day notices on the official site or social media before setting out.

Drives with preschoolers, elementary-school children, or dogs

Let children use the park and dogs use the dog run

Osaki Fureai no Sato Park adjoins the station and has a lawn, play area, Japanese garden, and event square. A few tens of minutes outside while waiting for food or after shopping can refresh children and dogs tired of the car.

Restrooms → Produce shop or meal → Lawn park and dog run

In summer, watch the sun and bring water; after rain, mind the ground. With dogs, follow the dog run rules and be considerate of others.

A half-day drive in fair weather

Add the pine grove and burial mound beyond the station

After a meal and restroom break, head toward Kunino Matsubara Campground for the sea breeze and pines, or visit Yokose Kofun for some Osumi history. Choose nature or history to suit your companions.

Roadside station → Kunino Matsubara Campground or Yokose Kofun → Return trip

Crowds around Kunino Matsubara change with the summer pool season and campground closures. Tourism information lists no parking at Yokose Kofun, so follow local signs.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a restroom break and brief shopping; decide on a longer stay based on heat and where to feed or change your baby.

The national roadside-station listing marks infant-care facilities. Check the current location and hours on site.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

If the car has become tiresome, the lawn and play area offer a short outdoor break.

Letting children move outside before returning to shop may be calmer than browsing for a long time inside.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

The rhinoceros beetle monument, park, and soft serve ice cream offer easy goals for a visit.

Masumaru Pool is another summer option. Check its operating season, breaks, and which parts of the pool are open beforehand.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Combine park play, pine-grove walks, or a history detour to Yokose Kofun.

Head to Kunino Matsubara on a sunny day, or to Yokose Kofun if history appeals. Choose after lunch.

Restrooms

Use them early on a long drive. On busy days, also check the route toward the park.

Outdoor play

The station and park adjoin each other, so children can move around briefly before or after a meal or shopping.

Rainy days

Skip outdoor activities and keep the visit shorter with bathing, food, and shopping.

With dogs

The dog run is described as a fenced lawn. Check the rules and crowding on site.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Choose a comfortable parking space

Many visitors use the baths, dining, and produce shop in one stop. On busy days, choose a space with an easy walk instead of insisting on one by the entrance.

  2. 2
Use the restroom and get water first

Osaki's summer sun can be strong. Bring water before heading out to the lawn or pines.

  3. 3
Rest before driving after a bath

If using the Asuparu baths, take a short break at the canteen or produce shop afterward before driving home.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Event square

On the Osaki Fureai no Sato Park side, a coliseum-like square suits town gatherings and outdoor events.

Lawn

An outdoor space for children's breaks, visits with dogs, and waiting during events.

Event hall

The official site lists this facility for meetings, exhibitions, and residential training.

Asuparu-side parking area

The Old Car Festa notice places the venue in the Asuparu-side parking area, not the roadside-station-side area. Parking routes change on event days.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Check current hours for each facility

Roadside-station listings can retain older hours such as 7:00–19:00 for the shop and 8:00–22:00 for the baths. The operator and Osumi tourism information give approximately 9:00–18:00 for the produce shop, 11:30–14:30 for the restaurant, and 14:00–21:00 for the bathhouse canteen. Check the official site and social media before departure.

Sunday lunch can overlap with ordinary rest stops

Official Instagram and tourism information have listed a Sunday lunch buffet. If lunch is your main reason for visiting, arrive early. If it is busy, leave room for the bathhouse canteen, produce shop, or soft serve ice cream. Check whether the buffet is running on your date.

Dedicated facilities for dogs and RV stays

The operator lists an RV campsite for five vehicles with 30A power, Wi-Fi, toilets, and water, plus a dog run on fenced lawn. For an overnight stay or a visit with dogs, check availability and rules for these dedicated facilities instead of planning a long stay in ordinary parking.

The park changes from spring into the rainy season

Cherry blossoms, irises, and hydrangeas are seasonal highlights at Fureai no Sato Park. Spring suits blossom viewing; from around mid-May to June, look for irises and hydrangeas. Plan for shade and water in summer even on the same lawn.

Plan separately for pine walks and summer swimming

Kunino Matsubara is a pine grove extending about 7 km. The campground is listed year-round, while Masumaru Pool is listed for July and August. A walk needs different preparation from camping or swimming; check closure days and pool breaks.

Check parking arrangements on event days

For Old Car Festa, the official notice puts the venue in the Asuparu Osaki-side parking area and says temporary general parking nearby has limited capacity. Even for an ordinary rest stop, checking whether an event is on can make entry and exit easier.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Approximate hours: produce shop 9:00–18:00; restaurant 11:30–14:30 (last order 14:00); bathhouse canteen 14:00–21:00 (last order 20:30); day-use baths 13:00–21:30 (last admission 21:00). Match the facility to your arrival time.
  • Day-use baths close Mondays except holidays, and after the holiday period if holidays run together. The bathhouse canteen closes Mondays, or Tuesdays if Monday is a holiday. Listed bath prices are ¥600 for adults (junior-high age and older), ¥400 for elementary-school children, and free for preschoolers. Private family baths are ¥2,200 for one hour, with reception from 13:00 to 20:00. Check the official site or social media if visiting for bathing or food.
  • A tourism site lists 100 free car spaces, while roadside-station and map listings give other capacities. Follow on-site parking guidance during events.
  • With children, use the restroom first, then visit the lawn park or play area. Break up a longer shopping trip with outdoor play.
  • With dogs, check the dog run; for sleeping in an RV, check the campsite's availability. Do not assume ordinary parking is suitable for a long stay.
  • For a summer outing to Kunino Matsubara or Masumaru Pool, plan water, hats, a change of clothes, and the pool's break times.
  • Tourism information lists no parking at Yokose Kofun. If driving there, watch for local guidance and a lawful place to stop.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Make lunch the main event

Restaurant lunch and Sunday lunch buffet

Usually 11:30–14:30. Time your visit for locally sourced Osumi seafood, Osaki eel, and Kagoshima beef dishes.

Official news listed the Sunday lunch buffet for Sundays in September 2026 only. Check the official site or social media for October onward. If the wait is long, leave room to switch to the bathhouse canteen or sweets at the produce shop.

Arriving in the afternoon

Udon, soba, curry, and light meals at the bathhouse canteen

The canteen offers a food option from 14:00 after restaurant lunch hours. It suits a light meal before or after bathing. Udon and soba are Japanese noodle dishes.

The bathhouse canteen usually closes Mondays. A notice says it closes Tuesday instead if Monday is a holiday.

Buy food to take home

Seasonal vegetables, black-haired wagyu and black pork products, processed foods, shochu spirits, and souvenirs

Visiting the produce shop at the end helps with cooling and loading purchases. Pick up Osumi Peninsula ingredients for dinner.

Fresh produce may be scarce late in the afternoon. Look earlier if you have a particular item in mind.

A brief break in the car

Soft serve ice cream and rotating seasonal flavors

When a full meal feels too much, a sweet treat makes a short stop and can lift children's spirits.

Pair with the baths

A light snack, drinks, and takeaway items from the produce shop after bathing

After bathing, pause for a drink and short rest before a long drive home.
