How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Decide first
Views and rides first?

On clear days, begin with the lift, lookout and slider. If the weather looks likely to turn, eat and shop first.

For play
Take the road train uphill to the play area

It takes about 10 minutes from the parking area to the clubhouse. The ride makes the climb easier with small children or a stroller.

For food
Restaurant Kami no Kura

Options include black pork dishes, udon, soba and a children's lunch. Plan around its Wednesday closure and last order time.

For shopping
Kami no Sachi and Yokamon Market

Pick up blueberry products, black pork miso, yuzu miso, persimmon vinegar and Kirishima souvenirs before leaving.

For a side trip
Kirishima Jingu Shrine or Kirishima Onsen Market

Visit the shrine before or after your stop; choose the onsen market on rainy or chilly days. For mountain walking, continue to Takachiho-gawara.

Mio's stopover notes

Head outside when it is clear; turn to food and hot springs when the weather changes. Kirishima makes it easy to switch plans.

Mio Miyasaka presents this highland stop as a base for adjusting to family energy and weather. Lining up play areas, restrooms, food, shopping and rainy day options helps make a relaxed stop before or after Kirishima Jingu Shrine, or on the way to the hot springs.

Use a clear spell for children to run around, and save food and souvenirs for the way back.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Kirishima is a highland roadside station on National Route 223, integrated with Kirishima Shinwa no Sato Park. At about 670 m above sea level, it offers views, a sightseeing lift and Super Slider, a restaurant serving Kagoshima black pork, a local products shop, and a summer blueberry garden. It deserves more than a drive past on the way to Kirishima Jingu Shrine. On clear days, start with the views and play areas; in rain or fog, switch to food, shopping and nearby hot springs for an easier family stop. Address: 鹿児島県霧島市霧島田口2583-22 (2583-22 Kirishima Taguchi, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture).

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A gateway to Kirishima's highland park as much as a roadside station

Instead of stopping at the shop, take the road train uphill to the play area, see Sakurajima and Kinko Bay from the lift or lookout, then head back. Even an extra hour before or after Kirishima Jingu Shrine gives children a chance to move around.

02

Black pork and local flavors for lunch; blueberries and Kirishima goods to take home

The restaurant offers black pork shabu-shabu hot pot, black pork tonkatsu, Saigodon set meals, and black pork udon or soba noodles. In the shop, look for blueberry juice and jam, black pork miso, yuzu miso, persimmon vinegar and Satsuma tinware.

03

A highland stop that changes with the weather

On clear days, the main draw is the view over Sakurajima and Kinko Bay toward Mount Kaimon. In fog or rain, favor the restaurant and shop, Kirishima Onsen Market, or a short walk near Kirishima Jingu Shrine over the lookout and outdoor rides.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 60 to 90 minute break with elementary school children

Enjoy the lookout and slider first on a clear day

After a restroom stop, take the road train toward the clubhouse. Ride the sightseeing lift, look out over Sakurajima and Kinko Bay, then descend on the Super Slider to turn a driving break into playtime.

Parking → restrooms → road train → lift and lookout → slider → shop

The Super Slider is for ages 4 and up. Children under 6 must ride with a parent, and children through second grade must be accompanied by an adult. Check for closures in rain or strong wind.

Adults, three generation groups and shorter sightseeing drives

Fit lunch and shopping around a visit to Kirishima Jingu Shrine

Make your shrine visit the anchor, then focus on a black pork lunch and the local products shop at the roadside station. If visibility is good, a short walk outside after eating adds a sense of Kirishima's highland setting.

Kirishima Jingu Shrine → lunch at the roadside station → souvenirs at Kami no Sachi → hot spring area via National Route 223

The restaurant is currently listed as closed on Wednesdays. At lunchtime, allow for noodle dishes or the shop if limited meals are sold out.

Family drives from early July through August

Make a short summer stop for the blueberry garden

In 2026 the blueberry garden opened on July 5, with announced opening days of Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Picking depends on weather and the crop, so check availability before visiting and include juice or jam from the shop in your plans.

Parking → blueberry garden → Yokamon Market → restaurant or shop

Admission is free; picked berries cost about ¥150 per 100 g. Bring a hat, long sleeves and protection against the heat.

Kirishima drives with uncertain weather

Switch to hot springs and short indoor stops in rain or fog

At this highland station, views and outdoor rides depend on the weather. In poor visibility, eat and shop here, then head to the footbath and steamed food at Kirishima Onsen Market or the visitor rest area at Kirishima Jingu Shrine.

Meal and shopping at the roadside station → Kirishima Onsen Market → accommodation or hot spring district

In heavy rain, avoid gorges and walking trails; stay with indoor places, paved routes and the hot spring district.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Restrooms and meals are useful; keeping outdoor rides off the plan may be easier.

The road train has a carriage advertised with a stroller ramp. As sun, wind and fog change quickly in the highlands, a short visit centered on the shop and restaurant can work well.

Ages 2 to 3
★★★☆☆

The road train and children's play area suit this age; adults should lead on the slopes.

Many children this age are too young for the slider or need to ride with an adult. Keep watching, riding and eating in short stages, and lower expectations for rides in rain.

Ages 4 to 6
★★★★☆

The lift, slider, play area and blueberries offer several ways to plan a visit.

The Super Slider is for ages 4 and up. Children under 6 must ride with a parent, and those through second grade must be accompanied by an adult. On clear days, play first, then return to the restaurant or shop as children tire.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Enjoy the views, slider, putter golf and the area's mythological setting.

Adding Kirishima Jingu Shrine or Takachiho-gawara can bring volcanoes, myths and nature into the day. Summer blueberry picking is another possible goal.

Spaces used for events

2026 blueberry garden

Opened July 5, 2026, with Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday opening days announced through August. Weather or crop size may end the season early. Admission is free; picked berries cost about ¥150 per 100 g.

Sakura gathering

A spring event timed to the park's roughly 500 cherry trees. The March 29, 2026 program advertised Kirishima Kumen Taiko drumming, puffed rice and the local sweet nettabo. Check official notices for a future spring event.

Kirishima Autumn Leaves Festival

A recurring fall event with Kirishima Kumen Taiko drumming and complimentary offerings. An event was announced for November 30, 2025; for an autumn visit, check current details alongside the foliage on National Route 223.

Seasonal events in the Kirishima hot spring area

Updates around the onsen market include the Tenson Korin Kirishima Festival and trail events. If continuing from the roadside station into the hot spring district, check dates and possible traffic congestion.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The road train helps families reach the play area

The road train climbs from the parking area to the clubhouse, helping small children and grandparents reach the rides. Because the slider has age rules, plan supervision and an accompanying adult for preschoolers; older children can add the slider and putter golf.

Summer blueberries are fun, but check heat and the crop

For 2026 the blueberry garden announced opening from July 5 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Entry is free and picked berries are sold by weight, but a small crop can end the season early. A hat, long sleeves and heat precautions are advised; a short morning visit suits families.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

  • Roadside station and park facilities generally open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Watch the restaurant's Wednesday closure and last order time.
  • Kirishima City lists the parking area and restrooms as open 24 hours. Overnight, use the site for a rest stop rather than for shopping or dining.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Try a limited set meal

Saigodon set meal

For a little of several local dishes, including Kirishima black pork, house-made satsuma-age fried fish cake, Kirishima tofu and Satsuma pork and vegetable soup. Only 10 meals are offered daily, so arrive early for lunch.

Make black pork the main course

Black pork shabu-shabu hot pot set meal, black pork tonkatsu set meal, black pork katsu curry

Good for adults and elementary school children wanting a substantial meal after sightseeing, with highland views while seated.

Eat quickly with children

Children's lunch, black pork udon or soba, fried chicken set meal

Options when you do not want a long wait around playtime. Find seats and visit the restroom first, allowing for hot noodles and movement on stairs.

Take something for the car or home

Blueberry juice, blueberry jam, black pork miso, yuzu miso, persimmon vinegar

Take home Kirishima flavors even if you skip the restaurant. In summer, mind cooling needs and the temperature inside your car.

Continue toward the hot springs

Steamed food, onsen manju buns and footbath at Kirishima Onsen Market

An option when a full lunch here feels too heavy or when it rains. Combine it with a short break in the hot spring district.
