How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Check first
How busy the market and restaurant are

Around lunchtime, decide whether bonito, pizza or sweets will be your main stop.

For food
Bonito, pizza and strawberry sweets

Choose bonito for a full lunch, pizza to share, or strawberry sweets after a meal or during a short break.

For shopping
Nichinan farm, seafood and livestock products, and shochu

Browse local ingredients, boxed meals and prepared dishes, shochu and station-exclusive products; choose with your journey home in mind.

With children
Inclusive playground beside the lawn

Playground hours are around 9:00–18:00. Keep outdoor time short in heat or rain and switch to the information center or hot spring.

Where next
Kitago Onsen, Inohae Valley and Hanatate Park

A hot spring finish, a forest walk or cherry blossom viewing each makes a different half-day trip beyond the station.

Mio’s notes on eating and shopping

Make bonito your lunch choice, with pizza and strawberries as alternatives.

Mio Seto sees this station as a place to choose Nichinan ingredients on the road. Bonito may be the star of lunch, but there is pizza to share with family, seasonal strawberry sweets, and shochu and prepared dishes to enjoy after getting home. If one place is busy, another option can make a weekend drive easier.

Look beyond a single restaurant: pizza, sweets and the market all help you enjoy Kitago.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Kitago is just off Prefectural Route 28 from Nichinan-Kitago IC, with plenty of food and outdoor play. Its restaurant serves locally landed bonito; other choices include authentic oven-baked Neapolitan pizza and strawberry sweets made with Kitago water and its day-to-night temperature swings. The market sells local farm, seafood and livestock products as well as shochu, so it is easy to spend time both eating and shopping. On the lawn side is inclusive play equipment described as among the largest in Kyushu. A day-use hot spring and Inohae Valley are nearby, making the station useful for anything from a short break to a half-day drive.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Just off the expressway, from Nichinan seafood to Kitago mountain produce

A few minutes by car from Nichinan-Kitago IC on the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway, the station brings together bonito, Nichinan chicken, local vegetables, strawberries and shochu. Whether you are heading from Miyazaki City toward the Nichinan Coast or going on to Obi or Kitago Onsen, it is an easy place to decide where to eat and what to buy.

02

More than one option for lunch

Katsuwo Specialty Restaurant, Kitago Branch serves bonito boat bowls and bone-in chicken nanban, fried chicken dressed in a sweet-and-sour sauce and tartar sauce. Lady Go Land makes oven-baked pizza with Nichinan basil and local vegetables, while Minami Ichigo offers seasonal strawberry parfaits and shaved whole strawberries. At a busy lunchtime, keep the restaurant, pizza, sweets, and the market’s boxed meals and prepared dishes in mind as alternatives.

03

Outdoor play for children, shopping for adults

The inclusive park beside the lawn has six types of play equipment, and the information center has spaces for nursing and changing diapers. You can stay longer for the playground or give children 15 minutes to move around after a meal, making a weekend drive easier for the whole family.

04

On hot or rainy days, use the information center and hot spring

The information center and toilets are open 24 hours, with tourist brochures and a rest area. If outdoor play is difficult, make a shorter stop for shopping and food, then drive a little farther to the day-use hot spring at Sun Cherry Kitago for a half-day outing less dependent on the weather.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 60–90-minute stop before heading into Nichinan

Lunch and shopping just after the interchange

Close to Nichinan-Kitago IC, the station lets you pause at the toilets and information center first, then have lunch at Katsuwo Specialty Restaurant, Kitago Branch or Lady Go Land. If you know when you will head home, choose vegetables, prepared dishes, shochu and sweets at the market.

Parking → toilets and information center → bonito or pizza → market → departure

Restaurant hours are around 11:00–15:00. At the lunchtime peak, leave room to switch to pizza, sweets or takeaway from the market.

Families with preschool and elementary-school children

Reset the drive with time for children to play

Visit the inclusive park beside the lawn before or after eating. Its six types of play equipment give children a short chance to move around and change the mood in the car. Adults can browse the market while the children focus on the playground.

Parking → get ready at the information center → playground → meal or sweets → market

The equipment is outdoors. Check the sun at midday in summer and footing on rainy days; favor a short visit over a long stay.

An afternoon drive for adults

Finish gently with sweets and a hot spring

Enjoy a parfait or shaved strawberries at Minami Ichigo and shop at the market, then drive to Sun Cherry Kitago. Reopened as a day-use hot spring in 2024, it has a sauna and family baths and makes a good finish after eating.

Sweets and shopping at the station → Sun Cherry Kitago → journey home

Sun Cherry Kitago closes on the second and fourth Mondays, among other closure days; family baths require a phone reservation.

A fine day when you have walking shoes

Extend the trip to Inohae Valley on a forest-walking day

Eat lightly and get drinks at the station before heading to Inohae Valley. The path toward Gojū Falls is about 3 km each way, a substantial walk through moss and evergreen broadleaf forest. If you are dressed for a meal rather than a walk, choose the hot spring or Hanatate Park instead.

Station → prepare drinks and a light meal → Inohae Valley → hot spring or journey home

In the valley, consider footing after rain, heat, insects and the time needed to return. Plan it as a walking destination, beyond a quick station break.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★★☆

The information center’s nursing and diaper-changing facilities make short stops easier.

A short stop for toilets, nursing, diaper changing, sweets or shopping may work better than making the outdoor playground the main destination.

2–3 years
★★★★☆

Children can move around on the lawn and equipment, but keep visits short in heat or crowds.

Playing for just 15–30 minutes before or after eating can refresh a car journey. Watch children closely around the many products in the market.

4–6 years
★★★★★

Inclusive play equipment, pizza and strawberry sweets make a good combination.

At this age it is easy to build a visit around play, sharing pizza and resting over sweets. In rain, switch to the hot spring or a more indoor break.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Extend beyond the playground to the Next Cruiser or a valley walk.

If the station alone is not enough, choose Sun Cherry Kitago, Inohae Valley or Hanatate Park according to the weather and everyone’s energy for a half-day trip.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

At lunch, keep several options besides bonito in mind

The official facility listings and food experiences make the Katsuwo boat bowl a strong reason to visit. Pizza, strawberry sweets, and boxed meals and prepared dishes from the market also offer choices. On a holiday lunchtime, plan around your group’s ages and how busy each place is.

A new timber building makes for a pleasant break

Opened in 2023, the new station draws favorable comments for its information center, toilets and wood-rich building. Before heading into Nichinan, you can combine a toilet break, nursing or diaper changing, and a look at tourist brochures.

Play equipment works for both long visits and quick breaks

The inclusive park has six types of equipment and is popular with families whose children want to play. In midday summer heat or rain, keep outdoor play brief before or after eating to make the drive easier.

At the market, look beyond fresh produce to shochu and station exclusives

Alongside local farm, seafood and livestock products, boxed meals, prepared dishes, alcohol and sweets, the market lists seabed-aged Kokuzojima sake and station-exclusive products. Separating food for your table at home from Nichinan souvenirs makes shopping easier.
