Mio’s detour notes

Think about shopping for the return trip before choosing a meal.

Kushima is more enjoyable when you look around the cafeteria, sushi restaurant, potato stand and market before deciding on lunch. Even if you are hurrying to Cape Toi, take note of something to buy on the way back while stopping for the toilets and a drink. The drive through southern Miyazaki then includes a chance to bring home a taste of Kushima.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Kushima is a town-center roadside station near JR Kushima Station in Miyazaki Prefecture’s southernmost area. Browse Kushima’s farm and seafood products at Umiyama Marche, then choose the buri (yellowtail) rice bowl at Umiyama Shokudo, Sushi Tora, or sweet-potato treats at POTATO STAND. With little time, shop and use the toilets; with more, walk to the Former Yoshimatsu Residence; with half a day, continue to Cape Toi, Kushima Onsen, or Dolphin Land. Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Combine a break with a town walk near the station

Close to JR Kushima Station, this roadside station is also easy to spot at an intersection along National Route 220. Park, use the toilets, check destinations at the information center and walk to the nearby Former Yoshimatsu Residence. A stop here lets you spend a little time in Kushima itself before moving on.

02

Several choices for a meal

There is Umiyama Shokudo’s Buri Puri rice bowl, Sushi Tora for lunch or dinner, POTATO STAND’s fried sweet-potato sticks and soft-serve ice cream, and local sweets at Umiyama Marche. If lunch is busy, a snack or some shopping gives you another option. Keeping eating and shopping separate can make your driving schedule easier to plan.

03

Replan your southern Miyazaki outing here

Cape Toi, Kōjima Island, Koigaura, Kushima Onsen and Dolphin Land each call for different amounts of time and different footwear. Tourist information and 24-hour toilets at Michi-no-Eki Kushima make it easier to weigh the weather, heat and children’s energy before choosing the coast, a hot spring or a short walk nearby.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short break on National Route 220

With just 20 minutes, start with the toilets and market

Use the 24-hour toilets, then pick a drink, sweet or piece of fruit at Umiyama Marche. Brochures for Cape Toi and Nichinan at the information center can help you choose your next stop.

Parking → 24-hour toilets → Umiyama Marche → information center → departure.

The market and information center are generally open 9:00–18:00. Early mornings and evenings are mainly for a toilet break.

Lunch with family, friends or during a work trip

If stopping for lunch, keep several options open

Try for the Buri Puri rice bowl at Umiyama Shokudo, while keeping Sushi Tora, POTATO STAND or a market snack in mind. The range helps when companions want different sized meals.

Check arrivals at the market → cafeteria or Sushi Tora → dessert at POTATO STAND → shopping.

Umiyama Shokudo is listed as closed on Thursdays, and last orders differ by shop. Check the latest notices when your visit is for a meal.

Adults who want a break from driving

See a little of town within a 30-minute walk

The Former Yoshimatsu Residence, about a two-minute walk from the station, offers a glimpse of Kushima’s history beyond the market. Admission is free, making it a quiet, short detour before the coast.

Roadside station → Former Yoshimatsu Residence → shop at the market → departure.

The residence closes on Tuesdays and at New Year, among other days. In hot weather, keep the walk short and return to the station’s rest area.

A destination for a southern Miyazaki drive

For half a day, add either Cape Toi or the hot spring

On a clear, calm day, consider the Misaki horses and sea views at Cape Toi. On a rainy or tiring day, Kushima Onsen Ikoi no Sato may be an option, subject to its current bathing status. Eat and shop at the station first, then add one destination to keep travel manageable.

Roadside station → Cape Toi PAKALAPAKA or Kushima Onsen → return journey.

Check Cape Toi gate hours, lighthouse visiting hours, and wind or typhoon conditions. Kushima Onsen announced a reopening after renovation on August 29, 2026; check current operating notices.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Town-center location makes a short stop easy

Near JR Kushima Station and easy to find along the national road. Reviews mention the large building, range of goods, cafeteria, sushi restaurant and dog run; visits before or after sightseeing often fit within an hour.

When the cafeteria is busy, try snacks and shopping

Alongside interest in the restaurant, some visitors buy local sweets or desserts at the market and eat them outside. At lunchtime, including POTATO STAND or the market gives you options beyond Umiyama Shokudo.

Events change the atmosphere of the plaza

The official site describes the event plaza as a place for small live shows, markets, family lunches and children’s dance practice. Events can make the stop more rewarding, but allow for parking and food waits.

Weather and timing shape a Cape Toi visit

Cape Toi offers views of the Pacific and Misaki horses, but gate and lighthouse visiting hours, strong winds and typhoons affect plans. Eat and use the toilets at the station, then decide whether to go while it is clear or turn to an indoor activity or hot spring if it rains.

The hot spring has reopened; check its current status

Kushima Onsen Ikoi no Sato is within driving range of the station. Its large bathing area, previously closed for renovation, reopened on August 29, 2026, according to the operator. Check current official notices before planning a hot-spring visit.
