How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First on arrival
Locate the toilets and browse the shop briefly

This is a practical stop before driving into the mountains. With children, locate the outdoor toilets and check the route through the shop first.

What to buy
Seasonal fruit, vegetables, prepared foods, and boxed meals

Early peaches, persimmons, kumquats, and mandarins vary by season. Come earlier in the day if you have something particular in mind.

What to eat
Hanaya restaurant, or a light boxed meal and ice cream

The Kyushu Regional Development Bureau lists Hanaya (八七八) as open 10:00–16:00. Leave room in the plan for snacks or prepared foods instead.

With children
A break before or after the drive, rather than long play

Come for the toilets, drinks, light food, and a quick shop rather than playground equipment. Add ETO Land if the children need time to play.

Before heading outdoors
Stock up before Mount Hiei or Shishigawa Gorge

The mountain roads toward the gorge and campgrounds can be long. Drinks, a snack, and a toilet stop here make practical sense.

For seasonal produce
New tea, peaches, Chinese lantern plants, Jiro persimmons, and Japanese mountain yams

The facility website lists local-product events from spring through winter. Check its calendar or social media for the next confirmed date.

Highlights

Kitakata Yocchimiroya is a michi-no-eki, or roadside station, just beside Kurata Intersection, where the Kyushu Chuo Expressway and National Route 218 meet. It is not a large complex, but it packs in the flavors of Kitakata: local vegetables and fruit, boxed meals, processed foods, and ice cream made with Chiyohime peaches. On the drive from central Nobeoka toward Takachiho or Hinokage, it is an easy place for a light meal, food to take in the car, and a toilet stop before entering the mountains and gorges.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A useful stop before Takachiho and Hinokage

Just beside Kurata Intersection, the station is convenient both before heading from central Nobeoka into the mountains and after returning from the mountain roads. It is better suited to a quick toilet stop and supplies of drinks, boxed meals, and fruit than to a long stay for playgrounds or bathing. Pausing here before a trip to the mountains or gorges can make the rest of the day easier to plan.

02

Kitakata fruit and prepared foods make the trip memorable

Fruit growing thrives in Kitakata-cho, making use of the area’s differences in elevation. The shelves change with the seasons: Jiro persimmons, kumquats, satsuma mandarins, grapes, strawberries, and early peaches all have their turn. Chiyohime peach ice cream, recommended by the tourism association, along with local vegetables, handmade prepared foods, and boxed meals, lets you take a taste of Kitakata with you even without sitting down at the restaurant.

03

A compact stop for families and older visitors

Visitor information lists 44 free parking spaces. Miyazaki Tourism Navi also lists covered accessible parking, a low-step entrance, two multipurpose toilets, and a baby bed toward the back. With less ground to cover than at a large roadside station, the site can be useful for families with babies or anyone making a short stop. On busy seasonal market days, a shorter shopping visit may be easier.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A travel break on National Route 218 or the Kyushu Chuo Expressway

Take five minutes before driving from Nobeoka toward Takachiho

Next to Kurata Intersection, the station is handy for toilets, drinks, and a light meal before heading into the mountains. The shop focuses on local vegetables, fruit, boxed meals, and processed foods, so it is easy to pick up what you need without a long search.

Central Nobeoka → Kitakata Yocchimiroya → Hinokage and Takachiho.

Published closing times differ. For a late-afternoon stop, planning around 18:00 is prudent.

A light lunch or food to take in the car

Enjoy boxed meals and ice cream as well as the restaurant

Hanaya restaurant offers light meals, but the farm shop is also part of the visit. Handmade prepared foods, boxed meals, local vegetables and fruit, and Chiyohime peach ice cream can give even a short stop a Kitakata flavor.

Look for boxed meals and prepared foods → add ice cream or fruit → continue to the next stop.

Popular boxed meals and seasonal fruit may sell down during the day. Morning or late morning gives you a better chance of a choice.

A half-day outing with preschool or elementary-school children

Use the station for a break, then go to ETO Land for play

Kitakata Yocchimiroya is a place to sort out toilets and snacks, rather than a place for children to play for a long time. For play, continue to ETO Land Hayahinomine, which lists go-karts, an athletic play area, and other activities.

Kitakata Yocchimiroya → ETO Land Hayahinomine; about 25 minutes from Kitakata IC via Roppo Kaido is listed.

ETO Land is listed as closed on Tuesdays, while some listings show seasonal differences. Check the facility’s latest information before going.

Short walks, photography, and nature drives

Cherry blossoms in spring; mountains and gorges from summer to autumn

Cherry trees line the area around the former Hayedo Station close to the roadside station. Farther out are the Senjojiki viewpoint on Mount Hiei, Shishigawa Gorge, and Shishigawa Campground. A brief walk nearby in spring or a longer drive into the mountains in summer and autumn are both possible.

Kitakata Yocchimiroya → Hayedo cherry trees / Mount Hiei Senjojiki / Shishigawa Gorge.

Weather and road conditions matter on the mountain and gorge routes. After rain or late in the day, plan without pushing too far in.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Information on multipurpose toilets and a baby bed makes this useful for a brief break. It is not a place for extended play.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Suited to a short shopping and snack break. For space to run around, add ETO Land or another nearby destination.

Ages 4–6
★★★☆☆

Fruit and ice cream may appeal, but there is little playground equipment. It works best as a change of pace before or after the mountain drive.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Add nearby cherry blossoms, ETO Land, or Mount Hiei Senjojiki to make a half-day outing rather than only a rest stop.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Choose a parking space first

The parking lot is listed as having 44 free spaces. With covered accessible parking available, choosing a space near the store can shorten the walk on rainy days or when walking far is difficult.

  2. 2
Locate the outdoor toilets and information corner

The listed 24-hour facilities are useful before or after the mountain roads. Early in the morning or at night, check the lighting and vehicle movement and keep the stop brief.

  3. 3
    Keep meals flexible

If you do not want a sit-down restaurant meal, boxed meals, prepared foods, fruit, and ice cream still make a break possible. That helps when companions have different appetites.

  4. 4
    Allow time for mountain trips

Mount Hiei and Shishigawa Gorge are appealing, but travel time and weather can have a large effect. Stock up at Kitakata Yocchimiroya and continue deeper into the mountains only when there is enough time.

Spaces used for events

Farm shop and outdoor sales area

These areas host seasonal local-product events such as new-tea, early-peach, Chinese-lantern-plant, Jiro-persimmon, and Japanese-mountain-yam festivals.

Official event calendar

As of July 18, 2026, no future events were displayed on the official event page. Seasonal events may also be posted on Instagram or Facebook, so check those channels for recent announcements.

Kitakata’s changing fruit season

Early peaches, grapes, Jiro persimmons, kumquats, and satsuma mandarins take turns in the shop. Even without an event, fruit in season can be a reason to visit.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The farm shop feels like a local kitchen

A travel account describes abundant fresh and dried vegetables, prepared foods, and boxed meals that invite a purchase. Think of it as a place to buy today’s dinner or lunch for the car as well as tourist souvenirs.

Chicken nanban boxed meals offer a Nobeoka-style lunch

On review sites, a chicken nanban boxed meal eaten at the station has even led visitors to explore nearby restaurants. Chicken nanban is fried chicken with a sweet-sour sauce, sometimes topped with tartar sauce; the station’s boxed-meal shelf can be a starting point for a Nobeoka-style lunch.

The location near the expressway entrance is practical

Review headings on sites such as Jalan mention the position near the entrance to the motor-vehicle road. The station is valued as a place to stock up before or after driving, rather than a destination for a long stay.

Seasonal events change what is on offer

The facility website lists annual events for new tea in spring, peaches in early summer, Chinese lantern plants in summer, Jiro persimmons in autumn, and Japanese mountain yams in winter. The seasonal shopping itself is worthwhile even when you are not attending an event.

Stock up before driving to the mountains and gorges

Official tourism pages feature mountain destinations such as Mount Hiei, Shishigawa Gorge, Shishigawa Campground, and Mount Hoko. Each involves more travel from the station, so it is useful to sort out drinks, snacks, and toilets here first.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Published closing times differ between 18:00 and 18:30. Plan around 18:00 for an evening visit, with extra time in winter or bad weather.
  • The parking lot is listed as having 44 free spaces, including six covered accessible spaces; two multipurpose toilets are also listed.
  • Some visitor listings describe the outdoor toilets, information rest corner, EV charger, and Wi-Fi as available 24 hours a day.
  • Hanaya restaurant is listed as open 10:00–16:00. Outside lunchtime, boxed meals, prepared foods, ice cream, and fruit offer other choices.
  • Shopping changes with the seasons: new tea in spring, early peaches in early summer, Chinese lantern plants in summer, Jiro persimmons in autumn, and Japanese mountain yams in winter.
  • Before going toward Mount Hiei or Shishigawa Gorge, sort out drinks, snacks, and toilets here so the mountain drive is easier.

Buy a taste of Kitakata

Local vegetables / fruit / processed foods / pickles

A good choice for a quick local shop. The facility website describes consignment sales by farmers and food-processing groups in and around Kitakata-cho.

Stock varies with the season and time of day. Go early if you want fruit for gifts.

Eat something light

Hanaya restaurant / boxed meals / prepared foods

Options for lunch before the mountain roads. If the restaurant is busy or closed, or you need to leave quickly, look for boxed meals and prepared foods.

Hanaya is listed as open 10:00–16:00. Around lunchtime is the easiest time to plan a restaurant stop.

Add something sweet

Chiyohime peach ice cream / soft-serve / seasonal fruit

The peach ice cream can make a short stop memorable. The tourism association and Miyazaki Tourism Navi recommend ice cream made with local Chiyohime peaches.

Seasonal items and stock change. On hot days, it is easiest to finish the ice cream before returning to the car.

Prepare food for the drive

Drinks / boxed meals / dried vegetables / fruit

Useful supplies before continuing toward Mount Hiei, Shishigawa Gorge, or the campground, where choices become more limited.

Avoid leaving heat-sensitive food in the car in summer; consider a cooler.

The Miyazaki Prefecture North tourism portal describes a line of about 300 cherry trees along the city road from the former Takachiho Railway Hayedo Station toward Eto Bridge on National Route 218. It suits a brief spring walk without traveling far from Michi-no-Eki Kitakata Yocchimiroya. Blooming dates vary each year, so check recent updates from the tourism association or social media if you hope to see the trees at their peak.

Mount Hiei in Kitakata, Nobeoka, is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty known for large granite-porphyry cliffs and views. The Nobeoka Tourism Association describes Senjojiki viewpoint as a place to see the rock faces of Mount Hiei and Mount Yahazu at eye level. The route continues into the mountains from the roadside station, so pick up drinks and snacks at Kitakata Yocchimiroya before going.

Shishigawa Gorge

About 60 minutes by carListed as about 60 minutes from the Kitakata-Nobeoka Road’s Kurata Intersection via Prefectural Route 214

Shishigawa Gorge has clear water flowing from Mount Oninome past granite-porphyry rock faces. The Nobeoka Tourism Association suggests forest walks in spring and summer, autumn-leaf viewing, and pairing the trip with a nearby campground. It lies farther into the mountains from Michi-no-Eki Kitakata Yocchimiroya, so plan it as a nature outing of at least half a day rather than a quick addition to a rest stop.
