Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Ebino is a food and shopping stop near the Ebino interchange on the Kyushu Expressway, beside National Route 268, which links Miyazaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima. Yui-no-Ichi Market sells freshly harvested vegetables, Ebino-grown rice, fruit and meat; taking home Miyazaki beef is a particular draw in this livestock-producing area. Ebino-kko Dining Hall serves a lunch buffet using local ingredients, while the Chaippe snack counter offers soft serve made with ripe Tamatama kumquats, giving even a brief stop a local flavor. The on-site Outdoor Station Ebino also makes it easy to combine shopping and eating with Green Park Ebino, Kyomachi Onsen and Ebino Plateau. An onsen is a Japanese hot spring.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Shopping in Ebino means looking beyond vegetables to Miyazaki beef

Yui-no-Ichi Market is more than a place to pick up freshly harvested vegetables, fruit and Ebino-grown rice. It also has a substantial meat selection and events such as Miyazaki beef fairs, so a cooler bag is worth bringing. Before or after joining the expressway, you can even choose the centerpiece of dinner here.

02

Choose the dining hall for lunch, or kumquat soft serve for a quick stop

Ebino-kko Dining Hall draws visitors with a lunch buffet made from local ingredients and views of the Kirishima mountains. Lunch can be busy, and the restaurant has closing days separate from the shop. If your timing is uncertain, switch to ripe Tamatama kumquat soft serve at the Chaippe snack counter or browse the market for a taste of Ebino on a short break. Tamatama is the name used for the ripe kumquats.

03

Close to the Ebino interchange for a stop on either leg of your trip

Near the Ebino interchange on the Kyushu Expressway, the station is a useful junction for drives between Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Kumamoto. In the morning, buy vegetables and drinks before heading to the plateau or hot springs; on the way back, load up on rice, meat and souvenirs before returning to the expressway. The parking area is large, but allow for shoppers and sightseers to arrive together during fairs and holiday periods.

04

Use the on-site outdoor hub to explore Ebino and its plateau

Outdoor Station Ebino provides information on trekking, cycling, camping, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and skating around the city. After eating, you can check rental bicycles, weather and restrictions toward the plateau before setting off. Volcanic activity and road restrictions can change which mountain routes are open, so check shortly before your visit.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

For the drive home toward Miyazaki, Kagoshima or Kumamoto

Pick up the centerpiece of dinner before joining the expressway

Before heading to the Ebino interchange, combine a restroom break with shopping for meat, vegetables, rice and souvenirs. If buying Miyazaki beef or Ebino-grown rice, allow time for cooling and loading. You can also add a quick sweet treat before departure.

Parking → restroom → Yui-no-Ichi Market → meat, rice and vegetables → snack counter → Ebino interchange

Stocktaking, severe weather and the end of a fair can change closing times and availability; check the official blog.

Weekend drives and food-focused stops

Make lunch the main event and rest with a view of the Kirishima mountains

Enjoy the lunch buffet at Ebino-kko Dining Hall, then choose local ingredients at the farm market. On busy days, first check the queue or available seats; switching to snacks and shopping may keep the rest of your itinerary on track.

Parking → Ebino-kko Dining Hall → Yui-no-Ichi Market → kumquat soft serve → departure

The restaurant is listed as closed on the second and fourth Wednesdays, and evening service is by reservation only.

Stops before cycling, trekking or camping

Ask at Outdoor Station Ebino before exploring the city

Check rental bicycles and activity information at the on-site outdoor station, then head toward Green Park Ebino or Ebino Plateau. Weather, volcanic activity and road restrictions can greatly change mountain conditions, so eat and use the restroom at the station before deciding how to proceed.

Station → Outdoor Station Ebino → Green Park Ebino or Ebino Plateau → shopping on the way back

Check restrictions, fog and temperature differences toward the plateau; prepare properly for mountain walks.

Families with children or grandparents, and days with uncertain weather

On rainy days, turn to a factory visit or a hot spring

Eat and shop at the station, then switch to a self-guided visit at Green Park Ebino or the Kyomachi Onsen area if outdoor play is difficult. Factory visits are mainly on weekdays, while hot spring hours tend to be longer, making it easier to rework a rainy-day itinerary.

Station → Green Park Ebino → Jubei-no-Yu hot spring → Ebino interchange

The factory has many closed days; prepare another option if your visit falls on a weekend or public holiday.
