How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First thing on arrival
See the sea and Devil's Washboard from the observation deck

Enjoy the view while the weather is clear. If the wind is strong, a short look is enough.

For something sweet
Mango, Hyuganatsu, or ashitaba soft serve

This is a stronger stop for a sweet break than a meal. The light-snack counter may close earlier than the souvenir shop.

To take something home
Miyazaki fruit sweets, shochu, and seasonings

It's easy to choose Miyazaki souvenirs even on a short stop, including a last purchase on the way back from Aoshima.

With children
Enjoy the view and a sweet treat briefly

This is not a station with large play equipment for a long visit. In heat or wind, make the shop and toilets the focus of the break.

For a half-day outing
Continue to Aoshima or Miyazaki Shirahama Campground

Head north for a walk around Aoshima or south toward Shirahama and Nichinan. The station works well before or after your main destination.

In rain or cloud
Focus on the shop and a brief look at the view

The sea's color changes markedly with the weather. Shopping and a sweet treat make a good focus when the view is subdued.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Phoenix is a roadside station with a view of the Nichinan Coast, downhill to the south of Horikiri Pass. Below are the rippled rocks known as Oni no Sentakuita, or the Devil's Washboard, and the Pacific Ocean; on the hillside are tropical-looking phoenix palms and bougainvillea. This is a pleasant place to choose Miyazaki souvenirs in the shop and enjoy mango or Hyuganatsu citrus soft serve with the view, rather than settle in for a long restaurant meal. Before returning to Aoshima or continuing toward Shirahama and Nichinan, even a short stop offers a memorable view and taste of the trip.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Soft serve with a coastal view is the main attraction

This station is better suited to a shop and snack stop than a long restaurant meal. Choose a distinctly Miyazaki flavor such as Miyazaki mango, premium Hyuganatsu citrus, or ashitaba, a leafy herb, then step onto the observation deck to appreciate the Nichinan Coast drive. On a clear day, the blue sea adds to the treat.

02

Easy to choose Miyazaki souvenirs in a short visit

Products featuring ripe mango, Hyuganatsu citrus, shochu distilled liquor, and local seasonings and sweets let you add some Miyazaki shopping to your journey. The stop fits before or after sightseeing in Aoshima or Nichinan, including a final chance to pack souvenirs for the return trip.

03

A link from Horikiri Pass to Aoshima, Shirahama, and Nichinan

Stop after taking in the view at Horikiri Pass. Head north again for Aoshima, or continue south toward Shirahama and Sun Messe Nichinan. Even if the station itself is a brief stop, it fits well into the surrounding drive. On rainy days or when coastal winds are strong, shorten the outdoor viewing time and focus on the shop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A southbound day from Miyazaki Interchange or Miyazaki Airport

First refreshing stop on the Nichinan Coast from central Miyazaki

When the sea opens up beyond Horikiri Pass, this is a good place to pull over. Choose a Miyazaki sweet treat in the shop and look at the Devil's Washboard from the observation deck. That alone makes a satisfying start to a Nichinan Coast drive.

Miyazaki Interchange area → Horikiri Pass → Michi-no-Eki Phoenix → Shirahama and Nichinan area.

Plan on light snacks and shopping here, with another option if you need a full lunch.

A day combining Aoshima Shrine, the Devil's Washboard, and Aoshima Beach

Add souvenirs and a sweet break before or after Aoshima

Sightseeing in Aoshima often involves a fair amount of walking, so a soft-serve break before or afterward fits nicely. On the return, you can pick up fruit sweets from Miyazaki, shochu, or seasonings here.

Aoshima → Michi-no-Eki Phoenix, or Michi-no-Eki Phoenix → Aoshima.

Choosing parking around Aoshima can take time. A short stop at the roadside station may keep the day moving smoothly.

Families with preschoolers or a break during a long drive

With children, make the view and toilet break short and pleasant

There is no large playground for an extended play stop, but children old enough to notice the scenery may enjoy the sea and rippled rocks. Combine the shop, a sweet treat, and the toilets; on hot or windy days, a shorter visit may be easier for everyone.

Park → toilets → shop → observation deck → depart.

Getting to the sea- and hill-side viewpoints involves steps or ramps. Check the steps and wind on site before using a stroller.

A southbound drive, camping, or sightseeing in Nichinan

Shop before Shirahama camping or Sun Messe Nichinan

Before continuing toward Shirahama, take care of drinks, a sweet break, and souvenirs here. If you are going as far as Sun Messe Nichinan or Udo Shrine, the scenery stop also breaks up the drive.

Michi-no-Eki Phoenix → Miyazaki Shirahama Campground → Sun Messe Nichinan area.

The coastal experience changes with the weather. In rain, spend less time at the viewpoint and more in the shop.

Suitable for a short break to nurse or change a diaper, while watching the heat and wind.

The tourism site lists a multipurpose toilet and baby facilities. Enjoy the view while carrying your child if comfortable.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Soft serve and a brief look at the view can be enjoyable.

For longer play, combine the stop with Aoshima or Shirahama.

Children may appreciate the shape of the Devil's Washboard rocks and the breadth of the sea on this short detour.

Hold hands on steps, ramps, and the way across the parking area.

Elementary school children
★★★★☆

The rippled rocks, Aoshima, and Horikiri Pass make a useful starting point for talking about the landscape.

For learning and play together, plan any low-tide rock exploration on the Aoshima side.

Toilets and baby facilities

Miyazaki Prefecture's universal tourism information lists a multipurpose toilet, baby chair, care bed, and ostomate facilities, among others.

Outdoor viewpoint

Sun and wind affect this coastal viewpoint. Keep the outdoor visit short in midsummer or severe weather.

Play area

Combine this station with Aoshima, Shirahama, or the campground for extended play.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Use the toilet near the parking area first

A toilet stop before heading to the sea- or hill-side viewpoint makes it easier to enjoy the scenery at an unhurried pace, even on a short visit.

  2. 2
Choose a sweet treat and souvenirs in the shop

After buying a cold treat, go only as far toward the viewpoint as feels comfortable. Keep outdoor time short on hot days.

  3. 3
Add the viewpoint if the weather is good

On cloudy or windy days, focus on a shopping break instead of the view to avoid unnecessary fatigue.

Rather than a dated event, a clear day is the draw here. Morning, evening, and sunny weather each change the view.

Souvenir shop

Seasonal fruit, souvenirs, and available soft-serve flavors can shape the visit. Check the official Instagram account for current notices.

Aoshima area

Nearby summer events, including the beer festival, can affect traffic on the coastal drive.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Many visitors stop for soft serve

Travel accounts and reviews often mention enjoying mango, Hyuganatsu, or ashitaba soft serve alongside the scenery. It works well as a short, uplifting sweet break rather than primarily a meal stop.

The weather strongly affects the view

On clear days, the Pacific and Devil's Washboard rocks are major attractions. In rain or cloud, some visitors make a shorter stop. When the view is muted, the shop and sweet treats offer another focus.

Expect heat and strong sun in summer

The tropical-looking planting and sea colors are appealing, but the outdoor deck is exposed to sun. Families with children and older visitors may prefer soft serve and a brief look at the view.

Aoshima pairs well with this stop

Government and tourism guides list Aoshima, Aoshima Onsen hot springs, Aoshima Beach, and Shirahama Campground nearby. Add a short stop here before or after walking around Aoshima to enjoy more of the Nichinan Coast.

Watch for redevelopment news

In spring 2026, Aoshima tourism information announced a call for views on redevelopment around Michi-no-Eki Phoenix at Horikiri Pass. Facilities could change, so check official information for future changes to operations or amenities.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The souvenir shop is generally listed as open 9:00–17:00. Soft serve and other snacks may finish earlier.
  • The Kyushu Regional Development Bureau's station page lists the restaurant as temporarily closed. Consider lunch options around Aoshima or Nichinan.
  • Views are most rewarding in clear weather; rain, strong winds, and midsummer sun may shorten your stay.
  • Guides give approximately 20 minutes from Miyazaki Interchange via National Route 220 toward Nichinan, and approximately 60 minutes by bus from Miyazaki Station.
  • Miyazaki Prefecture's tourism site lists a multipurpose toilet, ostomate and baby facilities, and wheelchair loans in its universal tourism information.
  • On days with summer events in Aoshima, allow for possible congestion on roads and in parking areas around Kodomo no Kuni and Aoshima.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Sweet treat
    Miyazaki mango soft serve
Miyazaki-style fruit soft serve; check current availability and price at the counter.
  • Sweet treat
    Premium Hyuganatsu soft serve
A light-snack option pairing the refreshing flavor of Hyuganatsu citrus with the view.
  • Sweet treat
    Ashitaba soft serve
An unusual choice featuring ashitaba, a leafy herb, also mentioned in visitor reviews.
  • Shopping
Miyazaki fruit, shochu, and seasoning souvenirs
Souvenir choices that offer a taste of Miyazaki even on a brief stop.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

With the view

Mango and Hyuganatsu soft serve

The sweet treat enjoyed while looking at the sea may be the most memorable part of this stop. It is light enough before or after lunch, and companions can share different flavors.

Choices at the snack counter may narrow near closing; go earlier if visiting in the evening.

For something different

Ashitaba soft serve

Alongside mango and Hyuganatsu, try a more distinctive local flavor. It can be a talking point for visitors stopping specifically for sweets.

The selection may change with the season or day.

To take home

Fruit sweets, shochu, and local seasonings

On the way back from Aoshima or Nichinan, this is a convenient last place to add to your luggage. Pick up one more flavor that reminds you of the trip.

For a substantial lunch

Consider restaurants around Aoshima or Nichinan too

With the restaurant listed as temporarily closed, plan sweets and shopping at the station, then a meal such as seafood around Aoshima or another choice toward Nichinan.

Operations can change; prioritize current notices at the shop or on its official social media.

On a hot day

A brief cold refreshment

Summer can bring beautiful views but strong sun on the observation deck. A cold treat and a short look at the scenery can be a comfortable way to stop before continuing.
