How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First thing when you arrive
Restrooms, product hall, tourist information center

The order after that will change depending on how crowded Takachiho Gorge is and the boat reservation status. It will be easier for families to move around if they use the restroom and hydrate themselves first.

Top meal choice
Chicken nanban at the restaurant

The restaurant may close early when ingredients run out, so arrive in good time if lunch is the main reason for your visit.

To take home
Local vegetables, yuzu products, and mythology-themed souvenirs

In warmer seasons, a car may get too hot for food bought before sightseeing. Consider picking up fresh produce on your return journey.

Visiting with children
Get ready at the roadside station before visiting Takachiho Gorge

At the gorge, you may need to choose a parking area and walk. With small children, eating and using the restroom here before choosing a short visit can make the day less tiring.

If it's a rainy day
Consider the restaurant, product hall, kagura, or Amaterasu Railway

Rain can affect footing on the Takachiho Gorge path and at Amanoyasukawara. A mix of indoor stops, a ride, and shrines can make a rainy day easier.

For the evening
Plan backward from Takachiho Kagura

Takachiho Kagura generally begins at 20:00. Allow for dinner, parking, and check-in; getting a snack or shopping done at the roadside station earlier can make the evening easier.

Highlights

Roadside Station Takachiho is a convenient stop on National Route 218 as you enter Takachiho. Browse local vegetables and souvenirs in the product hall, eat chicken nanban (a Miyazaki fried-chicken dish often served with sweet vinegar sauce and tartar sauce) at the restaurant, and use the tourist information center to reconsider plans for Takachiho Gorge boats, kagura performances, shuttle buses, or a rainy day. The large kagura mask monument makes your arrival in Takachiho feel immediate. With children, start with restrooms and food, check the crowds at the gorge, then consider the Amaterasu Railway or shrines if plans need to change.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Sort out your plans here before heading to Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho’s attractions are close together, but boat reservations, parking, shuttle buses, and kagura performance times can change the order of your day. Roadside Station Takachiho offers food and shopping, with a tourist information center next door. After a restroom stop with the children, look through brochures and check the day’s crowds before deciding whether to visit the gorge first or start with a shrine or the railway.

02

Enjoy a taste of Takachiho quickly with chicken nanban and the product hall

Chicken nanban is the restaurant’s main draw. Udon and soba noodles also make it easier for family members with different appetites to find a meal. The product hall offers local vegetables, processed foods, sweets, and souvenirs reflecting the town’s myths. Even if a boat trip at Takachiho Gorge takes most of the day, a meal and shopping stop here lets you take home some local flavors.

03

The large kagura mask monument sets the scene for your visit

The kagura mask monument outside the station offers more than a photo stop. Before visiting night kagura, Amanoiwato, or Takachiho Shrine, it introduces a town connected by mythology and performing arts. Its size may startle small children. A photo here can help bring Takachiho’s stories to life before you visit a performance or shrine. Kagura is a traditional music and dance performance.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

First-time visitors, families with children, and holiday road trips

Check crowds and reservations before setting out for Takachiho Gorge

Boat reservations, parking, and shuttle buses can substantially change a visit to Takachiho Gorge. Eat and use the restroom at the station, then check tourist information and that day’s conditions to reduce uncertainty when you arrive.

Roadside Station Takachiho → Takachiho Gorge. On busy days and during summer holidays, also check shuttle bus and shared taxi information.

Boat places can sell out through advance booking. Parking areas closer to the gorge are likely to be busier.

A short break, a drive through town, or a rainy day

Even a lunch and shopping stop gives you a taste of Takachiho

A chicken nanban lunch and a look at local vegetables and sweets in the product hall can give even a brief stop a Takachiho flavor. A photo with the kagura mask monument adds a memorable image of the town.

Park → restaurant → product hall → kagura mask monument.

The restaurant can be busy at lunch and may close early if ingredients run out. Keep another option in mind for a late lunch.

Primary-school children, transport enthusiasts, and days when you want less walking

When children are tired, switch to the Amaterasu Railway

Walking at Takachiho Gorge or Amanoyasukawara may be more demanding depending on the weather and the children’s ages. If that seems too much, the Takachiho Amaterasu Railway at the former Takachiho Station offers scenery and a train ride in a shorter visit.

Roadside Station Takachiho → Takachiho Amaterasu Railway. It is a short drive from the station and fits into a half-day plan.

Service information is updated on the day, and rides may sell out on popular days. Check official information in the morning.

Overnight stays, evening arrivals, and culture-focused trips

If you are staying into the evening, plan the day around kagura

Takachiho Kagura is generally a one-hour performance beginning at 20:00. Eat and shop at the station during the day, visit Takachiho Shrine or Amanoiwato in the afternoon, have dinner, then attend kagura to connect the town’s cultural sites.

Roadside Station Takachiho → Takachiho Shrine → Dinner → Takachiho Kagura.

Check the tourism association’s booking page for current check-in times, reservation availability, and same-day ticket arrangements.

Sea-of-clouds seekers, photographers, and adult travelers

Add Kunimigaoka to an early autumn morning

From late September to early December, conditions may bring a sea of clouds to Kunimigaoka in the early morning. Visit the viewpoint first, return to the station for food and shopping, then go to Takachiho Gorge during the day for both scenery and local flavors.

Kunimigaoka → Roadside Station Takachiho → Takachiho Gorge or Amanoiwato Shrine.

A sea of clouds depends on the weather. Leave room in your plans to enjoy the morning mountain views even if it does not appear.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★☆☆

Baby changing facilities and a multipurpose restroom are listed, making this a useful stop before sightseeing. Carrying a baby around the gorge or Amanoyasukawara can be tiring, so adjust the order of visits here.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Meals and restrooms are convenient, but the station does not have large play equipment for a long play stop. See the kagura mask monument, then make a short visit to Takachiho Gorge or the Amaterasu Railway.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Children this age may connect the kagura mask, chicken nanban, maps, and stories of the gorge. Short destinations with a break at the station may be more enjoyable than a long gorge walk.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

Children can take an interest in Takachiho Gorge, the Amaterasu Railway, and sites associated with myths. Let them look at brochures and choose the next stop to take part in the trip.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Eat and use the restroom soon after parking

The product hall, restaurant, and tourist information center are together, making this a useful rest stop during a drive through the mountains on National Route 218.

  2. 2
Decide how far to walk before heading to the gorge

The effort involved at Takachiho Gorge depends on parking choice and path conditions. Check shared taxi and shuttle bus information before setting out.

  3. 3
    Avoid slippery paths after rain

Paths at Amanoyasukawara and the gorge can be slippery after rain. Consider places to sit or rest, including the restaurant, product hall, Takachiho Kagura, or the Amaterasu Railway.

  4. 4
Plan check-in and seating for evening kagura

Takachiho Kagura is held in a tatami-mat hall; guidance mentions bringing cushions or chairs. If sitting for a long time is difficult, check booking and admission arrangements beforehand.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Children respond differently to the kagura mask monument

The large kagura mask is a distinctive Takachiho photo stop, but it can overwhelm small children. If they are frightened, view it from a distance before going into the product hall.

An autumn visit to Kunimigaoka brings a different morning view

Early mornings from late September to early December are the usual period for the sea of clouds at Kunimigaoka. Pair a morning viewpoint visit with food and shopping at the station and an afternoon gorge visit.

Plan backward from the evening Takachiho Kagura performance

For a 20:00 kagura performance, allow time for dinner, parking, check-in, and children’s tiredness. Shop for souvenirs or snacks at the station earlier in the day before the evening cultural visit.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The product hall is listed as open 8:30–17:00. The Takachiho Town Tourism Association lists the restaurant as 10:30–15:00, with last order at 14:30; it may close earlier if ingredients run out.
  • The Miyazaki Prefecture tourism site lists parking for 72 cars, 7 buses, and 2 vehicles for people with disabilities. In tourist season, factor in crowds around Takachiho Gorge too.
  • Listings include a multipurpose restroom, baby changing table, baby chair, and ostomy facilities, useful when taking a break with infants before sightseeing.
  • Takachiho Gorge rental boats may require advance booking or sell out on the day. Check the day’s operating status while eating at the station so you can adjust your plans.
  • If attending Takachiho Kagura at night, plan backward from its 20:00 start: allow for dinner, check-in, and children getting sleepy. Look for souvenirs at the station during the day.
  • Take care on the paths at Amanoyasukawara and Takachiho Gorge after rain. On a rainy day, consider the Amaterasu Railway, kagura, the product hall, and restaurant.
  • Kunimigaoka can offer a sea of clouds on early autumn mornings, depending on conditions. Even without clouds, leave time for the morning views and a stop at the roadside station.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A full lunch

Chicken nanban / chicken nanban rice bowl / udon / soba

The main choice if you want a Miyazaki-style lunch at the station. Eating before Takachiho Gorge saves you from having to search for a meal near the gorge.

Lunchtime can be busy, and the restaurant may close early if ingredients run out. For a late meal, consider a snack or a restaurant in town.

Food to share with children

Udon / soba / rice dishes / sweet souvenir snacks

Noodles and shared portions can help families whose children find fried food too heavy or eat smaller amounts.

When it is busy, check how seating and ordering work. If the wait looks long, shop in the product hall first.

Buy for the car journey

Local vegetables / Processed products / Yuzu-based products / Sweets

The product hall is the place to take home Takachiho flavors. Buying fresh foods on the return journey avoids leaving them in a warm car while sightseeing.

Seasonal and directly sold items vary by time of day. Come early for a specific item; buy foods that need chilling nearer the journey home.

A short break

Drinks / souvenir sweets / sightseeing brochures

Even without a meal, the restrooms, drinks, and tourist information make this a useful stop to plan a Takachiho Gorge visit.

When traffic through the car park is heavy, check a safe route before letting children out of the car.

Take home a connection to local culture

Mythology-themed souvenirs / Takachiho night-kagura items / local brochures

If you plan to see kagura or visit shrines, read about their background at the station to give those later stops more context.

Souvenir ranges and stock change. Leave room to choose what you find rather than counting on a particular product.
