First on arrival
Check the toilets and shop

With toilets available around the clock and an information lounge, this is a useful break on a long drive.

For a meal
Asaji beef and shiitake dishes at Restaurant Fukujuso

Decide on lunch first around midday. On busy days, leave room to switch to takeout or soft serve.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Asaji is a practical rest stop in Asaji, Bungo-ono, just off Asaji Interchange on the Central Kyushu Cross Road via Prefectural Route 57. Inside the log-beamed Nanohana Oborozukikan, browse fresh vegetables, log-grown dried shiitake, Watada rice and kabosu citrus pepper paste; at Restaurant Fukujuso, try Asaji beef or shiitake dishes. This is not a place for a long stay built around large playground equipment. Parking, toilets available around the clock, EV charging and an information lounge make it a convenient meal and shopping stop before or after a drive toward Taketa or Aso.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Turn a break near Asaji Interchange into a meal and shopping stop

Close to Asaji Interchange on the Central Kyushu Cross Road, the station is easy to visit before or after driving toward Taketa, Aso or Takachiho. Although it is not a large complex, parking, around-the-clock toilets, an information lounge and EV charging make it a useful break in a drive. Add Asaji beef or dried shiitake to a simple rest stop.

02

A log building and the flavors of Asaji

Nanohana Oborozukikan is a wooden building constructed with exposed log framing. In the shop, look for local vegetables, log-grown dried shiitake, Watada rice, kabosu citrus pepper paste and a mix for Asaji beef rice. Restaurant Fukujuso serves Asaji beef and shiitake dishes, while wild grape soft serve offers a sweet taste of the area.

03

Extend the stop to Yujaku Park, Fukoji Temple or the Fumio Asakura Memorial Museum

Nearby drives take you to Yujaku Park for autumn leaves, Fukoji Temple for hydrangeas and a Buddhist figure carved into rock, and a museum devoted to sculptor Fumio Asakura. Choose nature or historic sites on a clear day, or the museum in rain or heat. The station works as a base before or after exploring Asaji.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive from the Central Kyushu Cross Road onto Prefectural Route 57

A practical break before heading toward Taketa or Aso

Proximity to Asaji Interchange is the advantage here. Rather than plan a long play stop, use the toilets, pick up a drink, check road information and do a little shopping; add Asaji beef or soft serve if you want a longer pause.

From Asaji Interchange or the Inukai side of National Route 57, turn onto Prefectural Route 57. From Oita City, allow about an hour via Inukai.

The main station closes in the late afternoon, so allow time in the 17:00 hour if you want to eat or shop.

An adult weekend drive or a stop centered on a meal

Have lunch here and shop for Asaji foods

At Restaurant Fukujuso, choose from dishes featuring Asaji beef, Bungo beef or shiitake. After eating, browse dried shiitake, Watada rice, a mix for Asaji beef rice and kabosu pepper paste at Nanohana Oborozukikan, extending the meal into something to take home.

Restaurant Fukujuso → Nanohana Oborozukikan → takeout or soft serve.

At lunchtime or on event days, keep the option of buying takeout or shopping first if the restaurant is busy.

A day for a short walk among seasonal scenery and historic sites

Spend half a day with autumn leaves, hydrangeas and a rock-carved Buddha

Yujaku Park is known for autumn leaves; Fukoji Temple offers June hydrangeas and a Buddhist figure carved into a rock face. Eat lunch and use the toilets at the station before setting out. Even a short visit gives you a sense of Asaji's landscape.

Michi-no-Eki Asaji → Yujaku Park or Fukoji Temple; each is about 5–10 minutes away by car.

During autumn illuminations or hydrangea season, consider footing, parking and rain gear. A light is useful if you visit the park after dark.

Adults traveling together or with grandparents who want to avoid an outdoor walk

Spend a rainy day quietly at the Fumio Asakura Memorial Museum

In rain or extreme heat, there is no need to force a visit to Yujaku Park or Fukoji Temple. Drive to the Fumio Asakura Memorial Museum for a mainly indoor visit, then combine it with a meal and shopping at the station for a relaxed half day.

Michi-no-Eki Asaji → Fumio Asakura Memorial Museum; roughly 10–15 minutes by car.

The museum has closure days, including Mondays, so check its opening calendar when planning a visit.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • If coming for a meal, arrive well before the restaurant's 16:30 last order.
  • For a short break, visit the toilets, shop, then soft-serve or takeout counter.
  • If seeking Asaji beef or shiitake, check both the shop and restaurant for food to take home.
  • Use the station toilets before heading to Yujaku Park or Fukoji Temple.
  • In rain or extreme heat, shorten outdoor walks and switch to an indoor stop such as the Fumio Asakura Memorial Museum.
  • On market or appreciation-festival days, check official social media for dining, parking and rain-related changes before setting out.
  • At night or early in the morning, plan on toilets and road information for a rest stop, rather than shopping.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

For a substantial meal

Asaji beef dishes / Bungo beef dishes / Asajin rice bowl

The main lunch options here. Asaji beef makes this more than a routine rest stop.

The restaurant's last order is approximately 16:30; avoid relying on it for a late arrival.

For local ingredients

Shiitake tempura / shiitake nanban (sweet-and-sour style) / log-grown dried shiitake

A way to taste the mountain produce of Bungo-ono. Dried shiitake are light to carry and work as gifts or everyday ingredients.

Products and menus change with the season and deliveries, so choose from what is available in the shop and restaurant that day.

For the car

Asaji croquette / Bungo beef minced-meat cutlet / Asaji fried chicken

Light snacks when you do not want a full restaurant meal, especially if your companions are hungry at different times.

Takeout is generally 10:00–16:00; expect some items to sell out by late afternoon.

For a sweet break

Wild grape soft serve / shiitake soft serve / Watada rice-and-salt ice cream

Distinctive choices even for a short stop, particularly in hot weather or after a meal.

Unusual flavors may divide opinion; sharing a serving with family can be a good way to try one.

To take home

Watada rice / mix for Asaji beef rice / kabosu pepper paste / Asataro salt sauce

Choose things you can use at home rather than only souvenirs. Rice, shiitake and seasonings make a distinctly Asaji combination.

Some product rankings are from older listings; see what is prominent in the shop now.
