How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First decision on arrival
Choose between bathing and lunch first

The hot spring is open until 20:00, but lunch service is shorter. If you're coming to eat, plan around the lunch hours first.

If you're eating
Try country cooking and jidori-meshi

The Kumamoto Prefecture tourism site describes more than 20 kinds of side dishes, plus white rice and jidori-meshi (rice with local chicken) cooked in a traditional wood-fired stove. Expect the selection to vary by day.

If you're shopping
Look for local vegetables and handmade manju

The farm shop may offer more choice earlier in the day. If you shop after bathing, leave enough time before closing and allow for changing stock.

With children
Consider a private family bath and ground golf

A private family bath may be easier than the communal bath with small children. School-age children may also enjoy ground golf, a simple outdoor club-and-ball game.

For a half-day outing
Add Kyusendo Cave or Ashikita's coast

For cooler hillside surroundings, visit Kyusendo Cave. For seafood, head toward Ebian or Otachimisaki. Let the hot spring anchor the route.

On a rainy day
Focus on the hot spring and restaurant

Weather changes the feel of the open-air bath and mountain roads. On rainy days, keep travel modest and enjoy a bath and meal.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Ono Onsen is a roadside station with a hot spring in the hills of Ashikita, where a driving break can become a welcome pause. Wash off the day's exertion in the all-cypress bathhouse, open-air bath, or private family bath. At lunchtime, try country cooking made with local vegetables and jidori-meshi (rice with local chicken), then browse vegetables and handmade manju, sweet filled buns, at the farm shop. Its appeal is the calm of a place where you can recharge before driving from Ashikita IC toward Hitoyoshi.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The hot spring takes center stage, but dining and shopping are part of Ono Onsen's character

Make time for the lunch restaurant and farm shop as well as the baths. Unwind in the hot spring, eat local vegetable side dishes and jidori-meshi (rice with local chicken), then pick up vegetables or handmade manju, sweet filled buns, before leaving. On a weekend drive, the break itself can become a destination.

02

A hillside stop before heading from Ashikita IC toward Hitoyoshi

Take Prefectural Route 27 from Ashikita IC on the Minami-Kyushu Expressway toward Hitoyoshi. Whether your day leads to coastal sights or farther toward Kyusendo Cave and Kuma, a meal and bath here can ease the strain of driving.

03

A quiet place with the feel of local daily life

Green hills, warm wood, vegetables in the farm shop, and handmade sweets give this hot spring, also used by local residents, a reassuring atmosphere. If you want a quiet break away from the bustle of a large roadside station, spend some time here.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A weekend drive from Ashikita IC with more driving in the afternoon

Arriving at midday? Eat first, then bathe

Lunch service does not last long, so go to the restaurant first if a meal is your priority. After local vegetable side dishes and jidori-meshi (rice with local chicken), a bath can make the afternoon drive more comfortable.

Ashikita IC → Prefectural Route 27 → Ono Onsen → toward Hitoyoshi or elsewhere in Ashikita Town

The restaurant can be busy at the lunchtime peak. If you arrive late, leave room to switch to the farm shop and baths.

A short break or a search for local vegetables and sweets

Even a shopping-only stop lets you take home local flavors

Visit the farm shop for local vegetables and handmade manju, sweet filled buns. Think of it as taking home a little of Ashikita's hillside produce rather than making a major souvenir stop. It is worth visiting even when you do not bathe.

Park → farm shop → information corner → next destination

Stock changes with the season and time of day, so go earlier if you have a particular item in mind.

Day trips with preschoolers, school-age children, or grandparents

With children, keep it easy with a family bath and brief outdoor play

Three types of private family bath are listed, giving you an alternative to the communal bath depending on age and crowding. School-age children can also try a little ground golf and move around during a long drive.

Private family bath or communal bath → rest → farm shop

Rain and heat affect outdoor activities. Keep the time outside short after bathing so small children do not get too cold.

Summer cool, rainy-day sightseeing, or a family keen on caves

On a Kyusendo Cave day, make the most of the cooler hills

Kyusendo is a limestone cave that pairs well with a drive from the roadside station. Add a meal or bath at Ono Onsen before or after the cave for a half-day hillside trip. In midsummer, it can also be a cooler alternative before heading coastward.

Ono Onsen → Kyusendo Cave, or Kyusendo Cave → Ono Onsen

Admission to Kyusendo's exploration course may change with weather or high water. Check the cave's official notices for the day.

A day for Ashikita seafood or a full family outing

For a taste of the sea, head toward Ebian or Otachimisaki

Ono Onsen is inland in the hills; Ebian and Otachimisaki Park are toward the coast. After a calm stop at the baths and farm shop, continue for ashiaka shrimp or seaside activities and experience both sides of Ashikita in a day.

Ono Onsen → Ashikita Utase Farm Shop and Restaurant Ebian → Otachimisaki Park

Coastal venues may change closed days, seasonal hours, or parking fees. Leave extra time during the summer holidays.

A short adult sightseeing stop or an easy walk after lunch

Add Sashiki Castle Ruins for history and views

Near Ashikita IC, Sashiki Castle Ruins is a historic park with stone walls and views over the town. If a bath and meal leave you wanting one more stop, a short visit on the return journey adds another side of Ashikita.

Ono Onsen → Sashiki Castle Ruins → Ashikita IC

Some areas of the ruins have little shade. In summer, go during a cooler part of the day.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★☆☆

A private family bath can help if bathing is the goal. Keep the visit short, with an easy route between the bath, rest area, and nursing or diaper-changing facilities.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A family bath is an option if the communal bath feels difficult. There is limited outdoor play for young children, so a bath and a little shopping may be enough.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The hot spring, farm shop, and a short walk can provide a change of pace. Ground golf may be best as a brief activity with an adult.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Combine the stop with Kyusendo Cave or Otachimisaki Park for a full day. On its own, Ono Onsen suits a short visit to half-day centered on bathing and lunch.

Private family baths

The Kumamoto Prefecture tourism site lists three types of private family bath.

Outdoor play

There is a ground golf course, but this is not a destination for large playground equipment for small children.

Rainy days

Focus on the baths and restaurant in the rain. Weather changes the feel of the mountain roads and open-air bath.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Allow time before turning onto the mountain road from Ashikita IC

The station is listed as about 10 minutes from the interchange, but Prefectural Route 27 runs into the hills. Plan an easy, shorter visit before dark or during heavy rain.

  2. 2
Rest before driving after a bath

After bathing, settle down in the farm shop or rest area before returning to a long drive. With a companion, you may also be able to take turns driving.

  3. 3
If you're coming for the restaurant, prioritize lunchtime

The restaurant is mainly listed for lunch service. With older family members, eating before bathing may reduce the wait.

  4. 4
Do not pack in too many coast or cave stops

Kyusendo Cave, Otachimisaki, and Sashiki Castle Ruins all appeal, but visiting all three adds a lot of travel. One additional destination may make for a more comfortable hot spring day.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Hot spring facilities

The facility's official Instagram sometimes announces hot spring promotions and collaborations with other bathing facilities. Check posts or flyers for admission fees and campaign dates.

Restaurant and farm shop

Local vegetables, country cooking, and manju change with the day and season. Seasonal produce can shape the visit.

Ground golf course

A place for a little activity outdoors on a fine day, before or after bathing.

Events in Ashikita Town

Beach volleyball, Ashikita Curry Road, and seasonal beach openings can make a hillside hot spring break fit naturally into a wider town itinerary.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The farm shop feels closer to a kitchen than a souvenir store

Local vegetables and handmade manju are highlighted here. Choose a few things to eat after you return home and enjoy the station's everyday character.

Several bathing options make it easier to suit your companions

Descriptions include an all-cypress communal bath, a stone-built open-air bath, a sauna, a goemon-buro (a traditional cauldron-style bath), a cypress bath, and three types of private family bath. Adults can linger, while families with children can choose a private bath.

On rainy days, favor the baths and restaurant over outdoor activities

Weather affects ground golf and stops along the mountain road. Check Kyusendo Cave's admission conditions as well; a shorter visit centered on bathing and eating may be easier than adding outdoor stops.

In summer, pair coastal events with a break away from the crowds

During Ashikita Curry Road or beach events around Otachimisaki, more visitors head toward the coast. Ono Onsen lies a little way into the hills and can be a rest or bathing stop on the way there or back.

With Kyusendo, it becomes a half-day hillside route

Kyusendo lists 9:00–17:00 hours and set admission times; its exploration course may be affected by weather or high water. Use Ono Onsen as a meal and bathing stop, and visit the cave when conditions are suitable.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The Kyushu Regional Development Bureau lists the farm shop as open 8:00–19:00 (until 18:00 from October through March). Produce and handmade items vary by season and time of day.
  • The Ashikita Town Tourism Association lists hot spring admission as ¥500 for adults, ¥300 for elementary school children, and free for children below elementary school age. Fees may have changed after the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, so check current facility notices.
  • Closed every Tuesday (or the following day if Tuesday is a public holiday) and January 1–2. Check the facility's official or operator announcements for temporary closures.
  • About 10 minutes toward Hitoyoshi from Ashikita IC on the Minami-Kyushu Expressway. Allow extra time on the hillside prefectural road in rain or at night.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Make lunch the main meal

Country cooking with local vegetables / rice cooked in a traditional wood-fired stove / jidori-meshi (local chicken rice)

Best if you can arrive at midday. Eat before the hot spring, then take your time bathing for a satisfying driving break.

Restaurant lunch is approximately 11:00–14:30, with last orders at 14:00. Do not count on a late arrival for lunch.

Buy something sweet

Manju (sweet filled buns) handmade by local women / locally processed foods

An easy way to take a taste of Ono Onsen home even without eating at the restaurant. The buns also make a snack for the drive.

Quantities and deliveries of handmade items may change daily.

Browse the farm shop

Local vegetables / seasonal produce / Ashikita specialties

Shopping here is closer to choosing food for your everyday table than buying tourist souvenirs. The trip can continue into dinner at home.

Vegetables may be easier to choose from in the morning or early afternoon.

Add a seafood meal on the coast

Ashiaka shrimp tempura rice bowl / ishi shrimp dishes / seafood from the Shiranui Sea

Ono Onsen offers a hillside break, while Ebian offers coastal food. On a day built around eating, enjoy both hot spring and seafood as separate stops.

Ebian is generally closed Wednesday and Thursday and serves mainly lunch. Check the restaurant's notices before visiting.

Look for seasonal food events

Ashikita Curry Road / Dekopon citrus / ashiaka shrimp / local fairs

Ashikita Town has ingredients from both sea and hills. Check town food events as well as the roadside station when planning detours.

Events may run only briefly; check the end date and participating restaurants before planning.
