Hiyori's stopover notes

Add park time to a fruit-shopping stop.

Hiyori Kuramochi sees Ryuhoku as more than a shopping stop. First, find the toilets and nursing room and plan the meal; then choose Yoshino pears or Banpeiyu citrus at the farm shop. If the children still have energy, move to Ryuhoku Park for a short play session. On rainy days or when the snack workshop's schedule is uncertain, keep the outing focused on choosing fruit and processed foods. The station makes it easy to arrange a family-friendly sequence.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Ryuhoku is a “Bistro Green” roadside station on National Route 3, centered on Hikawa Town's fruit and farm produce. The farm shop's seasonal selection shifts among Yoshino pears, Banpeiyu citrus, Shiranui mandarins, Taishu persimmons, tomatoes, and more. At the rural restaurant and snack workshop, try local flavors such as pear curry, Banpeiyu udon, and igusa soft serve—ice cream flavored with the rush plant traditionally used for tatami mats. Nearby, across the road, Ryuhoku Park has a long roller slide and play equipment for young children. For a family drive, it is easy to use the toilets, eat, and then let the children play at the park.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The fruit on display changes clearly with the seasons

Shopping at Ryuhoku is best approached as a chance to see seasonal fruit, rather than a search for the same souvenirs year-round. Look for Yoshino pears from summer into autumn, Taishu persimmons in autumn, and Banpeiyu citrus and Shiranui mandarins in winter. The official online shop also lists fruit and processed products associated with Hikawa Town.

02

Make igusa soft serve a memorable snack stop

Soft serve made with igusa, the rush plant associated with the Yatsushiro area and used for tatami mats, gives children and adults something unusual to talk about. The snack workshop operates irregularly in some months, so check its operating-day calendar in the official notices before visiting specifically for dessert.

03

The rural restaurant offers a main meal and a fallback plan

The restaurant's hours are approximately 11:00–15:00. Local-ingredient dishes include pear curry, champon—a noodle dish with vegetables and other toppings—and noodles made with Banpeiyu citrus. If it is crowded at lunchtime, switch to bread or processed foods from the farm shop or sweets outside, then head to Ryuhoku Park after eating to reduce the family's wait.

04

Nearby Ryuhoku Park extends the stop beyond the station

Just near the station, Ryuhoku Park has the 126 m “Red Dragon” roller slide and a combined play structure for younger children. If shopping alone will not hold the children's interest, use the toilets, eat, and shop at the station, then let them move around at the park before setting off.

05

A useful stop between National Route 3 and Ogawa Smart IC

The official access guide gives approximately 10 minutes from Ogawa Smart IC and approximately 25 minutes south along National Route 3 from Matsubase IC. On journeys toward Kumamoto City, Yatsushiro, or Uki, the station brings toilets, food, fruit, and children's play into one stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short break on National Route 3

Fruit and a toilet break in 30 minutes

After parking, use the toilets first, then browse seasonal fruit and processed foods at the farm shop. Even without a meal, you can take home Yoshino pears, Banpeiyu monaka—crisp wafer sweets with filling—or Banpeiyu jelly as a reminder of the stop.

Parking → Toilets → Farm shop → Departure

The fruit selection changes with the season and deliveries. Expect fewer choices late in the day and treat any good find as a bonus.

Around lunchtime, traveling from Kumamoto City toward Yatsushiro

Have lunch and dessert in one stop

At the rural restaurant, consider pear curry, champon noodles, or noodles made with Banpeiyu citrus, then have igusa soft serve afterward. If children cannot wait long for a meal, look at the shop's bread or light sweets first.

Station → Rural restaurant → Snack workshop → Farm shop

The snack workshop has announced irregular operating days. If dessert is your main reason for visiting, check its official notices first.

Family drives with children aged 4 and up on sunny days

Pair the stop with playtime at Ryuhoku Park

Eat and shop at the station, then move to nearby Ryuhoku Park across the road. The Red Dragon slide, Green Dragon athletic equipment, and play equipment for younger children make a good change of pace for children restless after a car ride.

Roadside station → Ryuhoku Park → Walking Center area, if time allows

Play equipment can become hot in summer. After rain, check the slides and slopes before using them.

A fruit-focused drive, approximately August–November

Explore Hikawa Town in pear season

If Yoshino pears are your goal, make the roadside station the main shopping stop and also look at the pear marathon and Fruit Road area. Buying a box of pears, choosing processed products, and trying pear curry at the restaurant can make pears the theme of the trip.

Roadside station → Ryuhoku Park area → Fruit stops around Hikawa Town

On event days, notices may say that parking at the station is unavailable. Check the town's latest information for race dates and local traffic.

Outdoor play on a sunny day or scouting a campsite

Extend the trip to Tategami Gorge for a half day

Have lunch and buy supplies at the station before driving to Tategami Gorge Satoyama Park. There you can see the river and suspension bridge, walk, or look over the camping area. With small children, assess the river's depth and rising water and consider sticking to the paths and bridge.

Roadside station → Tategami Gorge Satoyama Park → Return journey

River play depends on weather and water levels. After rain or when the river rises, focus on a park walk instead.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★★☆

The nursing room and a short shopping stop work well.

The official access guide lists a nursing room in the rest area. You can make a brief circuit of the toilets and shop; plan to avoid a long restaurant wait.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Pair a snack with a short visit to the young children's play equipment.

Ryuhoku Park has a newly installed combined play structure for young children. A short snack stop and park visit may work better than lingering at the station alone.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

The Red Dragon slide and Green Dragon play equipment can make the outing satisfying.

A visit to Ryuhoku Park after eating can break up a long drive. Check summer heat, hot slide surfaces, and slippery ground after rain before play.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Extend the outing to the park, ancient tombs, and Tategami Gorge for learning and outdoor play.

Connect the Yoshino pear and Banpeiyu growing area with the Notsu Kofun tomb group associated with the ancient Hi-no-Kimi clan and the landscape of Tategami Gorge. That can make a half day of more than eating and shopping.

Event

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Snack workshop operating days

As of July 2026, an official notice says the workshop's hours and days are irregular because of staffing. If you are going for igusa soft serve, check the monthly calendar.

Seasonal fruit fair

Official notices have announced a seasonal fruit fair in June. Even after the event ends, the changing fruit selection is worth watching.

Golden Week events

In some years, Golden Week events are announced on the official site and social media. During the holiday, allow separately for crowds at the restaurant, farm shop, and parking area.

Hikawa Town Pear Marathon

The 21st event was announced for September 23, 2026, at Ryuhoku Park. The event notice says parking at the roadside station is unavailable that day, so plan differently from an ordinary stop.

Seasons at Ryuhoku Park

The park has cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and a festival square. In spring and early summer, combine a short flower walk with eating and shopping at the station.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Igusa soft serve is distinctive, but check operating days

Kumamoto's tourism site and Yatsushiro tourism information both feature igusa soft serve. The station's official notices, however, say the snack workshop operates irregularly, so leave room for another snack plan.

Yoshino pears and Banpeiyu change the seasonal feel

The national road authority's roadside-station guide gives August–November as the peak Yoshino pear period. The station's official product list also shows sale-end and seasonal information for Banpeiyu citrus, Shiranui mandarins, and Taishu persimmons. The leading fruit changes with your visit date.

Ryuhoku Park makes a family stop more rewarding

The roadside station itself centers on shopping and dining. Nearby Ryuhoku Park has a large roller slide, athletic play equipment, and a combined play structure for young children. Adding the park gives children a natural way to use their energy during a drive.

Event days require a different parking plan

The 2026 pear-marathon notice says parking is unavailable both inside Ryuhoku Park and at Michi-no-Eki Ryuhoku. Even if you are visiting to eat or shop, follow the town's traffic and parking information on event days.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Buy seasonal fruit

Yoshino pears, Banpeiyu citrus, Shiranui mandarins, Taishu persimmons, tomatoes

This is the station's most natural draw. A morning or midday visit usually gives you more to choose from.

Stop for lunch

Pear curry, champon noodles, Banpeiyu udon-style dishes

A choice for a seated meal while traveling National Route 3. The restaurant's hours are approximately 11:00–15:00.

Stop for sweets

Igusa soft serve and light snacks from the snack workshop

Even without a full meal, this makes a brief stop with flavors associated with Hikawa and Yatsushiro. Check the workshop's operating-day notices.

Buy gifts

Banpeiyu monaka wafer sweets, Banpeiyu jelly, Banpeiyu soda

These are easy small gifts when taking home whole fruit is inconvenient.

Share with children

Bread, soft serve, fruit, light processed foods

If the restaurant wait is long or a child is a picky eater, the shop and sweets offer other options.

Alternatives when crowded

Shopping at the farm shop, Ryuhoku Park, Tategami Gorge

You can shop briefly and switch to nearby play instead of making lunch the only plan.
