A 30–45-minute stop en route toward Aso or Oita
For a family break, combine toilets, a sweet treat and the second floor
Start with toilets and drinks, browse dairy products and woodcraft on the first floor, then visit OGUNIYA JERSEY for soft-serve before the children tire of shopping. On rainy or hot days, use the second-floor rest area to sit, eat and wait comfortably.
Parking → first-floor shop → OGUNIYA JERSEY → second-floor rest area.
OGUNIYA JERSEY is a separate shop from the roadside station. Follow the shop's own notices for hours, closures and sellouts.
A day with a nature stop
Check reservations and footing before Nabegataki Falls
Nabegataki Falls is about a 10-minute drive from the station. Advance online booking is standard; on-site same-day tickets may be available when reservations are not full, except on fully reserved dates. The park may also close temporarily during rain or high water. Use the toilets and get drinks here, then check booking availability and weather before setting out with children.
Roadside station → Nabegataki Falls Park → Sakamoto Zenzo Museum if time allows.
There are steps and steep slopes between the park entrance and the falls. Carry infants; strollers are unsuitable, and children who can walk are better placed to manage the route.
Bad weather or a trip with grandparents
On rainy days, focus on architecture, exhibitions and the museum
Instead of filling the day with outdoor activities, see Yu Station's architecture and second-floor exhibition, then drive to the Shibasaburo Kitasato Memorial Museum. Oguni's timber, medical history and local stories still make a coherent indoor-focused visit.
Yu Station → Shibasaburo Kitasato Memorial Museum → hot spring lodging early.
Check the museum's last admission time and New Year holiday closure; avoid crowding too much into the late afternoon.
Families with primary-school children or older who enjoy railway history and short walks
Add a short walk on the former Miyanoharu Line when you can
The roughly 4 km path from the former Higo-Oguni Station site to the former Kitasato Station site retains bridges and tunnels. You can enjoy the station site and walk only part of the route instead of completing it all, extending your driving break into a short outing.
Yu Station → former Miyanoharu Line walking path → drive toward Kitasato.
The route carries a walk-at-your-own-risk notice. Keep it short for children uncomfortable with wet ground after rain, dark tunnels or long distances.
Resting after Nabegataki Falls or a walk
Unwind at Tsuetate Onsen in the evening
Tsuetate Onsen, a hot spring town famous for springtime carp streamers, is about a 20-minute drive from the station. After a wet or tiring outdoor day, finish souvenir shopping here before heading to the hot springs.
Roadside station → Tsuetate Onsen → toward Hita or Kusu.
Check each facility and the tourism association for current day-bathing options, parking and event crowds.
