This farm shop opens at 7:30. Browse vegetables, wild mountain greens, miso, small-batch homemade products and boxed lunches; it is also useful for supplies before river activities.

An everyday lunch made with local rice, miso and vegetables. Visit around midday if you want the Shimanto beef tendon rice bowl.

River flavors

Canoe-kan and Rinrin Cycle

Canoe-kan is a short drive away. The roadside station also serves as a rental bicycle terminal.

Take in the view
Terrace and low-water bridges

Look out over the Shimanto River from the second-floor terrace. If time allows, continue to Iwama Chinka Bridge or Kuroson Gorge. Chinka bridges are railing-free low-water bridges.

Kasumi's detour notes

In Nishitosa, deciding what to eat before seeing the river makes the day more fun.

Kasumi Kashiwagi would start at Mizumizushii Market and Ayu Market: freshly picked vegetables, boxed lunches, wild ayu and rice flour cakes. You can sit down at the diner, make a short stop for grilled fish and sweets, or buy something to take home. The Shimanto River scenery is a draw too, but choosing one food first helps decide whether to visit Canoe-kan, continue to a low-water bridge or finish at the hot spring.

Sit-down lunch

Eat at Nishitosa Shokudo, then visit Ayu Market and SANKANYA within the station.

Shop and go

Browse boxed lunches and vegetables at Mizumizushii Market, then head to Canoe-kan or a low-water bridge.

Finish by the river

After Iwama Chinka Bridge or Kuroson Gorge, return to the station for sweets and souvenirs.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Yotte Nishitosa, in Ekawasaki on the middle reaches of the Shimanto River, makes it easy to plan a day of food, shopping and river activities. Browse Nishitosa vegetables and boxed lunches at Mizumizushii Market in the morning; for lunch, try a Shimanto beef tendon rice bowl or other local food at Nishitosa Shokudo, then salt-grilled wild ayu (sweetfish) at Ayu Market. SANKANYA serves cakes made with rice flour. Nearby Canoe-kan, Yoi Onsen, Iwama Chinka Bridge and Kuroson Gorge can turn a rest stop into the start of a full day along the Shimanto River.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A farm shop that helps shape the day from early morning

Mizumizushii Market opens at 7:30. Browse freshly picked vegetables from local farmers, handmade processed foods and boxed lunches. You can shop before lunch, stock up before canoeing or look for souvenirs on the way home.

02

A reason to eat wild fish from the Shimanto River

Ayu Market is a core stop within the station, selling wild ayu (sweetfish), eel, river shrimp and tsugani freshwater crab. Salt-grilled ayu demonstrations are limited to certain hours, so plan your visit around the market, Nishitosa Shokudo and SANKANYA to catch a taste of the river.

03

A short connection to river activities and hot springs

Canoe-kan, Hotel Seira Shimanto and Iwama Chinka Bridge are nearby; Kuroson Gorge is another seasonal destination. At the junction of National Routes 441 and 381, it is easy to move from shopping to time on the river.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A summer holiday family drive

From the morning farm shop to river activities

Browse boxed lunches, drinks and local vegetables at Mizumizushii Market before going to Canoe-kan. If you have a booked river activity, keep the station stop brief for shopping and toilets instead of sitting down at the diner.

Shop and use the toilets at the roadside station → Canoe-kan → return to SANKANYA or Ayu Market in the late afternoon.

In summer, heat and the meeting time for river activities shape the day. Plan how to carry food, and bring a change of clothes and sun protection.

A food-focused visit to Nishitosa

Make lunch and ayu the main event

Look for the Shimanto beef tendon rice bowl or another local lunch at Nishitosa Shokudo, then head to Ayu Market for salt-grilled fish and other river foods. Add a cake from SANKANYA afterward for savory food, sweets and items to take home, all within the station.

Nishitosa Shokudo → Ayu Market → SANKANYA → more shopping at Mizumizushii Market.

The salt-grilled ayu demonstration is roughly 10:00–15:00, and the diner has an early last order. Narrow your choices if you arrive after lunch.

A half-day drive for adults

Photograph the low-water bridge, then finish at the hot spring

After tasting Shimanto River foods at the station, go to Iwama Chinka Bridge. This railing-free bridge looks different as weather and river levels change; enjoy a short stop for photos and river views. On the way back, unwind with a day-use bath at Hotel Seira Shimanto.

Roadside station → Iwama Chinka Bridge → Hotel Seira Shimanto Yoi Onsen → more shopping at the roadside station.

The low-water bridge is also a local road. Do not venture onto it in high water or bad weather.

A November drive for autumn leaves

Plan Kuroson Gorge first in autumn

Kuroson Gorge is an autumn foliage destination. Use the station for meals, toilets and shopping before or after the trip, and decide how long to walk in the gorge and when to return in daylight. Pick up drinks and snacks before entering the mountain road.

Roadside station → Kuroson Gorge → rest at the station or around Ekawasaki.

Road restrictions or construction may affect the foliage season. Check recent updates from the tourism association or Canoe-kan before leaving.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

With a nursing room, diaper changing facilities and a multipurpose toilet, this is a convenient break on a riverside drive.

A quick circuit of the farm shop, toilets and SANKANYA may be easier than waiting a long time for a meal.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The terrace, Yodo Line diorama and a sweet break offer changes of pace.

If adding the river or a low-water bridge, mind the proximity to water and keep children in your arms or holding hands.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Combine Canoe-kan, river views, the ayu demonstration and the diorama to keep the visit varied.

Age rules for canoeing and other activities differ by plan. Treat a day at the station and a booked activity day separately.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Shimanto River foods, low-water bridges, canoeing and rental cycling bring learning and play together.

In summer consider the heat; in autumn the mountain roads and sunset; and in winter the closing days. Avoid packing in too many destinations.

Near the water

The river scenery is a draw. Keep small children within an adult's reach on the terrace, riverbank and low-water bridges.

Lunch timing

The diner and salt-grilled ayu offer fewer options late in the afternoon. With children, starting around 11:00 is easier.

Rainy days

Consider the second-floor community space and Yodo Line diorama, or a day-use bath at nearby Hotel Seira Shimanto.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Riverside BBQ

Facilities for a full BBQ beside the river at the station. Food and operating conditions change by season, so plan using official guidance.

Temporary food stall space

Kitchen stalls may appear during summer vacation and long weekends. They are separate from the regular diner, Ayu Market and SANKANYA offerings.

Shimanto River Rinrin Cycle

The station is a terminal for rental bikes that can be returned at another location. Combine it with Canoe-kan or Ekawasaki Station to travel along the river.

Kuroson Gorge and low-water bridges

Autumn foliage, river scenery on clear days and visits to low-water bridges are seasonal trips beyond the station. Road conditions and weather affect the experience.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A small station with a strong food offering

Visitor impressions suggest that although the station is not large, Ayu Market, the farm shop, diner and SANKANYA each serve a distinct purpose. Choose whether ayu, vegetables or sweets will be the focus instead of trying to visit everything.

In summer, plan for heat and food storage

Summers around Ekawasaki are hot, so avoid leaving fresh produce from the farm shop in a car. Buy boxed lunches and drinks before river activities, and vegetables or souvenirs on the way back.

On rainy days, turn to food and indoor breaks

When river activities or low-water bridges are impractical, try the farm shop, diner, SANKANYA, the second-floor diorama or community space, or nearby Yoi Onsen. The station's food options become useful in bad weather.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The official station notice dated September 1, 2026, scheduled autumn stalls for Poppo Chestnuts and Bikkuri Manju from September 19, 2026. Sales start around 10:00 and continue until sold out; items can sell out in the morning. The stall may be cancelled, so call 0880-52-1398 before leaving.
  • Nishitosa Shokudo, Ayu Market and SANKANYA have different hours. Plan lunch, salt-grilled fish and sweets according to each shop's hours.
  • If you want the salt-grilled ayu demonstration, check Ayu Market before sitting down at the diner.
  • If buying fresh produce before summer river activities, plan a cooler or the order of your purchases.
  • Tuesday closure is the general rule December–February. Ayu Market is also expected to close Tuesdays in March; check official guidance especially in winter.
  • Weather, river levels and flooding change the safety of low-water bridges and riverbanks. Simply viewing them can be rewarding.
  • Road restrictions or construction may affect a Kuroson Gorge trip. In foliage season, check updates from the tourism association and Canoe-kan.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Morning supplies

Vegetables, boxed lunches, drinks and processed foods

At Mizumizushii Market, choose snacks for the trip and items to take home separately before heading to Canoe-kan or a low-water bridge. Its early opening means you need not wait for lunchtime.

Cars get hot in summer. Buy fresh produce on the way back or bring a cooler.

A full lunch

Shimanto beef tendon rice bowl and a lunch with local vegetables

Nishitosa Shokudo is a good choice for an everyday local lunch. If you are going to river activities afterward, allow time for the meal beforehand.

Last order is around 14:50. Later in the afternoon, switch to SANKANYA or the farm shop.

River flavors

Salt-grilled wild ayu, eel, river shrimp and tsugani freshwater crab

Ayu Market offers some of the station's most distinctive foods. Alongside eating salt-grilled ayu, browse takeaway and online products to explore the Shimanto River's food culture.

Wild catch depends on season and deliveries. Do not expect a fixed selection.

Sweet break

Rice flour cake, baked sweets and coffee

SANKANYA works well for a short break, including with children, when you do not want a full meal. Local ingredients such as mountain-grown rice flour also appear in the sweets.

Eat outdoors

Riverside BBQ and temporary food stalls

On days with riverside BBQ or weekend and holiday food stalls during summer vacation, the station itself can be a meal destination. Groups and families should distinguish regular shop hours from event schedules.

Stalls and BBQ vary with weather, reservations and event dates. Check official announcements shortly before visiting.
