Parking and toilets

The national road-station listing gives 18 standard-car spaces, two large-vehicle spaces and one accessible space. Parking and toilets are listed as available 24 hours.

If you want to eat
Prepared dishes, 11:00–14:30

The shop is generally open 10:00–16:00; prepared dishes are generally served 11:00–14:30. There are only about 12 seats at lunchtime.

If you want to shop
Aki vegetables and Angel Cake

Eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, yuzu and chirimen bring local character. For a short stop, sweets and coffee are also easy choices.

If you want to go outside
Kono Park and Cape Oyama

A sea-view detour is right in front of the station. A clear evening, or a winter daruma sunset when the setting sun appears to have a second lower disk, can be a reason to visit.

On a rainy day
From station snacks to the Aki Station area

Keep the walk by the station short, then head to Aki Station Jibasan Market or the Aki Tourist Information Center for shopping and information.

Kasumi’s detour notes

See the sea, decide how much to eat, then head to the next place to play.

Kasumi Chitose sees this station as a small starting point that helps a family reset, rather than a large destination. First check the toilets and seating, then choose Cobos or a sweet. In fine weather, go to Kono Park; with children ready to walk, try Ioki Cave. On rainy days, move to the Aki Station area instead of lingering indoors. These small decisions let Oyama’s sea view and Aki ingredients become part of the journey.

Oyama works best as a stop where you see the sea once, then set off more easily on the family’s next leg.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Oyama sits on Cape Oyama along National Route 55, making it an easy short stop for sea views and Aki ingredients. Renovated in February 2024, it offers quick bites including Cobos, a taco-style dish packed with local vegetables, taco rice, chirimen pizza and Angel Cake. Seating and parking are limited, so plan a stop that combines the toilet, a light meal overlooking the sea, a walk in Kono Park (河野公園), and perhaps a visit to Ioki Cave (伊尾木洞) or the area around Aki Station, instead of counting on a leisurely lunch at the station alone.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Enjoy a short stop for Aki snacks with a sea view

The small indoor eating area has about 12 seats. Overlooking the Pacific, you can choose Cobos, taco rice, pizza with chirimen (small dried whitebait) and chicken, or coffee. It works well as a scenic food break while traveling National Route 55.

02

Look for Aki vegetables and sweets that travel well

Eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, yuzu citrus and chirimen give the menu its Aki character. Angel Cake and Angel Cup are good options to take away or enjoy during a break when you do not want a sit-down meal; they can also make a small snack for children.

03

Include Kono Park for a seaside break

Cape Oyama is also promoted as a Lovers’ Sanctuary, and Kono Park has a monument with a sweeping Pacific view. On a fine day, step outside for a few minutes after eating to enjoy the sea breeze and take photos.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short driving break toward Muroto or Aki

Take a 30-minute sea-view break on National Route 55

After parking, use the toilet and choose coffee or Angel Cake in the eating area. If the weather is good, walk a little way to Kono Park and look out to sea before setting off. A light stop leaves room for the next attraction or dinner.

Parking → toilets → eating area → Kono Park → depart

Seating and parking are limited. At lunchtime on holidays, allow time to move on to shopping or an outdoor walk instead of lingering.

Days when you want Cobos, taco rice or chirimen pizza

Stop for Aki vegetable snacks around lunchtime

Arrive during prepared-food service and try Aki eggplant and other vegetables in Cobos or taco rice. Take away an Angel Cake afterward for a small snack on the road.

Arrive during the 11:00 hour → prepared dish → local products shelves → take away sweets

Prepared dishes are generally served 11:00–14:30. Check recent posts on the station’s official Instagram for current opening days and possible sellouts.

Family drives with preschool and elementary-school children

With children, regroup here before Ioki Cave or a park

Use the toilets, get a snack and drink, then head to Ioki Cave with children who can walk or to Uchiharano Park when outdoor play is the priority. Moving on to the next destination, rather than staying at the station for hours, can make the day easier for everyone.

Break at the station → Ioki Cave or Uchiharano Park → extra shopping near Aki Station

The ground at Ioki Cave can be wet. With a child who needs carrying, or after rain, consider the sea view near the station or the area around Aki Station instead.

An adult detour for scenery and photos

Make Cape Oyama the focus in the evening

Cape Oyama is known for daruma sunsets and is promoted as a Lovers’ Sanctuary. Buy a drink at the station before sunset, then see the monument and sea at Kono Park before returning for a memorable short stop.

Station → Kono Park monument → sea view → onward journey

The shop generally closes at 16:00. If you are coming for the evening view, finish shopping and eating first.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Suitable for toilets and a short break, less suited to a long stay.

A baby changing table and wheelchair-accessible toilet are listed. With limited seating, use this as a quick stop to make a car journey easier rather than expecting to handle feeding, a meal and a nap in one place.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Sweets and sea views offer a quick change of pace.

Keep the stop to the toilet, Angel Cake and a short Kono Park walk rather than treating the station as a play area. After rain, assess the footing at Ioki Cave.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Combine the sea, monument, sweets and a short nature walk.

Visit Kono Park in good weather, or add a small adventure at Ioki Cave. The cave can be wet, so spare shoes or a towel can make the visit easier for parents.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Cape Oyama, Ioki Cave and Aki ingredients offer plenty to talk about.

The landscape, fern colony, chirimen and eggplant give children local topics even on a short visit. Add a guided Ioki Cave visit or Uchiharano Park for a half-day outing.

Spaces used for events

Cape Oyama evening views and daruma sunsets

Cape Oyama is promoted as a Lovers’ Sanctuary, and a daruma sunset can sometimes be seen in winter. If you are visiting for the evening view, buy food and drinks before the shop closes.

Seasonal posts on the official Instagram

Michi-no-Eki Oyama posts menu, opening and event information on Instagram. Short events end quickly, so check recent posts before visiting and adjust your food and shopping plans.

Uchiharano Park Azalea Festival

In spring, Uchiharano Park’s azaleas, wisteria, irises and Japanese irises are a major seasonal draw in Aki. It requires a drive from the station, but combines well with an Oyama snack for a half-day trip during the flowering season.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

After renovation, the station is also a food stop

The Aki tourism association and regional tourism guides highlight the February 2024 renovation, new restaurant, Cobos and Angel Cake. Plan it as a small destination for Aki vegetables as well as a rest stop.

At lunch, allow for the seat count and food-service hours

Visitor information lists 12 seats, prepared dishes from 11:00–14:30 and shop hours of 10:00–16:00. A lunch plan centered entirely here may be disrupted by a wait or sellout, so keep sweets, takeaway food or a restaurant in central Aki as alternatives.

The sea view changes when you step out to Kono Park

Visitors also mention walking in Kono Park and photographing the monument in front of the station, as well as the sea-view eating area. In fine weather, a few minutes outdoors bring the Cape Oyama setting into focus.

Ioki Cave is nearby, but check footing after rain and with young children

Ioki Cave is a popular, short, free walk. Official guidance recommends boots after prolonged rain or a heavy downpour, advises against sandals in summer and warns of rising water. Use the station for drinks and a toilet stop first so you can decide whether to turn back.

For more fresh produce and souvenirs, add Aki Station Jibasan Market

Oyama is a small station. For a wider shopping stop, Aki Station Jibasan Market adds vegetables, fish, prepared foods and souvenirs from eastern Kochi. It is also a useful extra stop on rainy days or in the evening.

Spring and winter offer different reasons to detour

In spring, the flowers and azaleas at Uchiharano Park draw visitors; in winter, Cape Oyama’s daruma sunset can be the attraction. Summer brings pleasant sea views, but mind the sun and keep fresh purchases cool in the car. In rain, avoid forcing a cave or seaside walk into the day.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Wednesday is generally the closing day; if it is a public holiday, plan for closure on the following business day
  • The shop generally opens 10:00–16:00; prepared dishes are generally available 11:00–14:30
  • Parking is limited, so at holiday lunchtime allow time for a walk outside or to continue to your next stop
  • For a Cape Oyama sunset, use the shop before it closes
  • Wear shoes that can get wet at Ioki Cave, and avoid sandals in summer
  • Bring a cooler bag if buying fresh produce
  • In rain, shorten the Kono Park walk and move to Aki Station Jibasan Market or the tourist information center

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Main lunchtime choice

Cobos, taco rice, keema flavor

First choices for a substantial taste of Aki vegetables. These generously filled dishes are easier to eat at a table in the eating area than inside the car.

A light dish to share

Chirimen and chicken pizza

A distinctive Oyama snack using small dried whitebait. It is easy for a family to sample together when you want a smaller meal.

Sweet break

Angel Cake, Angel Cup, Angel Mountain

Station specialties that are easy to introduce to children. Even outside the meal-service window, they make a good reason to pause with coffee or another drink.

Buy to take home

Eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, yuzu products and souvenirs

Vegetables are a hallmark of Aki. In summer, bring a cooler bag and choose fresh produce with your return time in mind.

If you need more food

Aki Shirasu Shokudo, Aki Station Jibasan Market

When station seats are full, or you want fish to be the main event, the Aki city center offers more options.
