A farmers' market with freshly picked vegetables, fruit, locally caught fish, boxed meals, and sushi. It is useful for supplies before camping or a day by the sea.

Let the children move
Otsuki Wanpaku Land

The large roller slide and combined play structure let children stretch after a long drive. Keep plans flexible on hot days or after rain.

Add on a clear day
Kashiwajima, Odo-yama Observatory, and Kashinishi Coast

Clear water, panoramic views, and shore exploration add to an Otsuki trip. In summer, check congestion and parking locations early.

Highlights

Roadside Station Otsuki, nicknamed Furepa, is a convenient stop on National Route 321 when traveling between the Sukumo area and Kashiwajima or the Odo Coast. At Furusato Center, look for Ichigoori (whole strawberries frozen in ice), Otsuki Soft, higashiyama (a dried sweet potato sweet), and bankan citrus products. Browse freshly picked vegetables, fruit, locally caught fish, and boxed meals at Fureai Market before continuing to the sea. If you have time, children can stretch their legs at Otsuki Wanpaku Land within the station grounds. On a clear day, continue to Kashiwajima, Odo-yama Observatory, and Kashinishi Coast for Otsuki's clear sea and local food.

Kasumi's Otsuki notes

Before rushing to the sea, get food and a place to rest here.

Kasumi Kurose sees Otsuki as a place to prepare for a calmer trip to the sea, rather than just a stop before Kashiwajima. Park, use the toilet, get light food at Fureai Market, and try Ichigoori or Otsuki Soft at Furusato Center. If you have children, let them move around at Wanpaku Land. Then continue to the coast for a more comfortable drive through Otsuki.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A practical place to prepare before Kashiwajima

Farther on toward Kashiwajima and the Odo Coast, sea views are impressive but options for food, shopping, and toilets become more limited. Otsuki lets you take care of parking, toilets, sweets, local produce, and tourist information in one stop before continuing.

02

Remember the stop with Ichigoori and Otsuki Soft

Furusato Center highlights Otsuki Soft, made with attention to local ingredients, and Ichigoori, made with whole frozen strawberries. Even when heading straight for the sea, one cold sweet makes the stop in Otsuki memorable.

03

Fureai Market suits shopping before and after a seaside outing

This farmers' market offers freshly picked vegetables and fruit, fish landed nearby, boxed meals, and sushi. Pick up drinks and light food before Kashiwajima, Kashinishi Coast, or a campground, then take home higashiyama or bankan products on the return trip.

04

Play within the station grounds makes family drives easier

Otsuki Wanpaku Land has a large roller slide and combined play structure. If children need a break on the drive to the sea, they can move around here before you set off again.

05

A plaza with a winter role, too

In some years, winter illuminations take place around the roadside station. Dates change each year, so check notices from the station or tourism association before planning an evening visit.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Swimming, snorkeling, and a driving break

A 30-minute break before Kashiwajima

Park and use the toilet, pick up drinks or light food at Fureai Market, then have a cold sweet at Furusato Center. Preparing here can save time searching for these things near the coast.

Parking → toilets → Fureai Market → Furusato Center → toward Kashiwajima

Roads and parking toward Kashiwajima can be busy in summer. Around midday, plan your stop so you do not spend too long deciding what to buy.

Long drives with preschoolers or elementary-school children

Let children play before setting off again

Let the children move around on the roller slide and combined play structure at Otsuki Wanpaku Land, add soft serve or drinks from the shop, then set off again. It changes the pace before you reach the sea.

Parking → toilets → Wanpaku Land → sweets → departure

The roller slide can feel different in heat or after rain, and clothing also matters. In summer, prioritize shade and water.

Shopping breaks for adults and gifts for the return journey

Take home Otsuki's food

Browse higashiyama, bankan products, and processed seafood to bring a taste of Otsuki home. Alongside coastal photos, the area's preserved foods and citrus flavors stay with you.

Furusato Center → Fureai Market → arrange cooling → drive home

Choose fish and prepared foods with your travel time in mind, and keep room-temperature gifts separate from chilled purchases.

Seeing Kashiwajima from above, photography, and scenery

Add a viewpoint on a clear afternoon

After a break at the roadside station, head to Odo-yama Observatory. It overlooks Kashiwajima, the Odo Coast, and the Pacific, so you can enjoy Otsuki's scenery even without entering the sea.

Roadside station → Odo-yama Observatory → Kashiwajima or Kashinishi Coast

Weather and wind change the view. If mountain roads make you uneasy, visit in daylight.

Unpredictable weather and the winter illumination season

On rainy or winter days, make a short station-focused stop

Instead of forcing a coastal or viewpoint trip, make a short stop at the shop, market, toilets, and tourist information. During the winter illumination season, an evening visit may work if the event is confirmed.

Parking → shop and market → around the event plaza → departure

Illumination and lighting ceremony dates change each year, so check current notices before setting off.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Convenient for toilets and a short shopping stop.

Breaks can be kept short within the station grounds. Wanpaku Land suits older children better, so account for carrying a baby and the heat.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Play equipment and sweets make for an easy change of pace.

The roller slide is fun, but children this age may tire from the heat or length of the slide. Keep the shop and car nearby, and return after a short play session.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Wanpaku Land and breaks before or after the sea are a good fit.

Let them move on the play equipment, then pause for soft serve or Ichigoori before Kashiwajima or Kashinishi Coast. Food and play are both available within the station grounds.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

The trip works well when extended to the sea, views, and shore exploration.

Prepare at the roadside station, then head to Kashiwajima's clear sea, Odo-yama Observatory, or the rocky shore at Kashinishi Coast. Check weather and tides when planning nature exploration.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Use the toilet after parking

Using the 24-hour toilets before heading to the coast makes the drive toward Kashiwajima easier.

  2. 2
Choose purchases with cooling in mind

If you want fish, prepared foods, and bankan products, a cooler bag in summer broadens what you can buy.

  3. 3
    Add viewpoints during daylight

Roads toward Odo-yama Observatory and the Odo Coast include mountain and coastal stretches. For scenery, visiting before sunset is more comfortable.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Otsuki Wanpaku Land

A large roller slide, combined play structure, and plaza give children a change of pace during a drive. Azalea season or plaza events may encourage a longer stop.

Otsuki Fureai Market

Local produce, boxed meals, sushi, fish, and prepared foods vary by time of day and season. An earlier stop before heading to the sea generally gives you more choice.

Illuminations around the roadside station

In some years, winter illuminations take place in a plaza near the roadside station. Follow each year's notices for dates, lighting hours, and parking.

Seasonal events toward Kashiwajima and the Odo Coast

On days with sea or mountain events such as Umino Photo Festival or public wind turbine openings, a roadside station break becomes especially useful. Check current schedules; do not plan around events that have already ended.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Ichigoori is a reason to stop in warm weather

Introduced as a cold sweet made with strawberries from the operator's own farm, it suits a break before or after a coastal trip. It can be popular in summer, so stop earlier in the day if you want it.

Fureai Market is handy for supplies before the sea

With freshly picked vegetables, fruit, locally caught fish, boxed meals, and sushi, it is a natural place to get food before Kashiwajima, Kashinishi Coast, or a campground.

Wanpaku Land gives children an option away from the sea

Its large roller slide and combined play structure offer a place to move around when the sea is rough or before arriving at the coast. Keep the stop shorter in heat or after rain.

Higashiyama is a preserved sweet that lets you take Otsuki home

This traditional sweet is made by drying sweet potatoes over time. It offers a taste of Otsuki's food culture alongside its seaside scenery and is convenient to carry by car.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Before heading to the sea

Boxed meals, sushi, drinks, fruit, and prepared foods that can be kept cool

Stock up before continuing to Kashiwajima or Kashinishi Coast. In hot weather, bring a cooler bag before shopping.

A short break

Ichigoori, Otsuki Soft, and bankan drinks

For days when you only stop for the toilet and a sweet. You can enjoy a taste of Otsuki even on a tight coastal itinerary.

Gifts on the way home

Higashiyama, bankan jelly, bankan juice, and kibinago kenpi (a small-fish snack)

Choose by how well items keep at room temperature and how easy they are to carry on a long drive.

Before camping or a barbecue

Vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, and seasonings

Restock before heading to Tatsugahama Campground or a seaside stay. The selection depends on the time of day and season.

With children

Soft serve, Ichigoori, boxed meals, and snacks

Fit in a quick bite before or after playing on the equipment. Planning around both the shop and market can be easier than relying on the dining area alone.
