Kasumi's Yoshiumi notes

Grill seafood, see the bridge, and take island flavors home.

Kasumi Miyasaka sees Yoshiumi Ikiiki-kan as a Shimanami Kaido gateway worth visiting for a meal. Build lunch around seafood grilled over a shichirin, buy citrus and seafood products, then add a cruise or Kirosan if time allows. Keep the schedule relaxed and center your Oshima visit on its seaside food experience.

Plan lunch here before or after crossing the Shimanami route, and the rest of the trip falls into place.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Yoshiumi Ikiiki-kan is a seaside roadside station overlooking the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, just after crossing to Oshima from the Ehime side of the Shimanami Kaido. Its shop, restaurant, food court, seafood shichirin barbecue, Shimanami Kurushima Strait sightseeing cruise, and Yoshiumi rental cycle terminal bring food, shopping, and sea outings together. At the barbecue, you can choose seafood and grill it yourself over a shichirin, a small charcoal grill; citrus juice and seafood products make fitting island souvenirs. In hot weather, allow time for outdoor seating and possible waits around lunch. If time permits, look down on the bridge from Kirosan Observatory Park and, from spring through autumn, visit Yoshiumi Rose Park for a day of Oshima food and scenery.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Choose and grill seafood: make the roadside station your lunch destination

The operator offers seafood barbecue with a wide range of seafood and seasonal fresh fish to choose and grill over a shichirin charcoal grill. Browse the selection, grill your meal, and look out at the sea: the experience is more than simply ordering at a restaurant.

02

From the foot of the bridge, continue by boat or bicycle

Cruise check-in for the Shimanami Kurushima Strait sightseeing boat is here; the boarding point at Shitadami Port is a few minutes away on foot. The Yoshiumi rental cycle terminal is also on site, so you can combine the bridge, sea, and cycling with a car trip.

03

Take home a taste of Oshima

Look for seafood, local farm produce, and processed citrus products in the shop. Alongside a meal, these make gifts or a way to enjoy Shimanami flavors at home.

04

Add views and flowers to round out a half day

Kirosan Observatory Park is a classic place to see the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge from above. Yoshiumi Rose Park offers changing flowers from spring through autumn. Make the station your lunch stop and add Oshima's scenery and seasonal color.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Lunch on a Shimanami Kaido drive

Make seafood barbecue the purpose of lunch

Plan this station as a lunch destination, rather than only a rest stop. See and select the seafood, grill it over a shichirin charcoal grill, then buy citrus or seafood products in the shop. If it is hot or the wait is long, a food court snack or citrus drink still offers a taste of Oshima. Kasumi Miyasaka recommends it as an entry point to Oshima worth visiting for the food.

Park → choose ingredients → seafood shichirin barbecue → shop → view the bridge.

Allow for waits and heat at lunchtime on holidays, summer days, and days with group visitors.

Families with children and first-time Shimanami Kaido visitors

See the Kurushima Strait up close by sightseeing boat

From the boat, see fast tidal currents and the shipyards that are hard to appreciate while driving across the bridge. Check in at the roadside station, then walk a few minutes to Shitadami Port. It fits before or after a meal, but departure times and weather may change your plans.

Check in at the station → Shitadami Port → approximately 50-minute cruise → shop or meal.

Check the requirement to check in 30 minutes before departure, tides, weather, cancellations, and the no-pets rule in advance.

An adult drive on a clear day

Finish with a view from Kirosan

After lunch, drive up to Kirosan Observatory Park to look over the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge and the islands. Experience the sea at close range at the station, then look down on the bridge from the mountain to see Oshima's varied landscape.

Roadside station → drive to Kirosan Observatory Park → sunset or return toward Imabari.

Take care on the mountain road and around the parking area; expect evening crowds and plan the return trip after dark if viewing night scenery.

Families in spring or autumn, flower lovers, and a sweet snack break

Add seasonal flowers at Yoshiumi Rose Park and Rose-kan

Bloom times, rose seedling sales, and Rose-kan opening days all affect a visit to Yoshiumi Rose Park. Pair flowers and sweets with a seafood lunch for another Oshima stop.

Roadside station → Yoshiumi Rose Park → Rose-kan or an island drive.

Check peak bloom, event dates, and Rose-kan's closed days.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

A shop visit, short break, and drive to Kirosan make a manageable outing.

Barbecue can mean smoke, heat, and waits. Decide on the boat after considering motion and boarding procedures.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Sea and bridge views make an easy change of pace; a snack and sweet treat keep the stop short.

Children need close watching near the shichirin grill. The food court may be easier on crowded days.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Choosing seafood, passing under the bridge by boat, and walking in the rose park can become hands-on experiences.

Plan around the cruise departure; use the toilet and prepare for motion sickness beforehand.

Elementary school children
★★★★★

Tidal currents, the bridge, the Murakami pirates, and viewpoints offer learning opportunities, alongside a memorable meal.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The heart of the station is seafood shichirin barbecue and a seaside lunch

The operator highlights choosing from a range of seafood and seasonal fresh fish to grill over a shichirin charcoal grill. Browse the selection and pick what appeals to you.

Shop, restaurant, and food court hours vary by season and day

The operator posts winter hours, busy-season schedules, and temporary changes. Treat listed hours as guides and check current notices.

The cruise departs from a port a few minutes' walk from station check-in

Complete check-in at the station at least 30 minutes before departure, then go to Shitadami Port. Timing matters when pairing the cruise with a meal.

Weekend lunchtime crowds and summer heat can affect the experience

Travel sites and dining reviews show high interest in seafood barbecue, alongside comments about heat, cost, and crowds. Allow time around lunch and consider a light-meal alternative.

Kirosan makes a strong viewpoint stop after the station

Imabari City describes views of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, tidal currents, Mount Ishizuchi, and night scenery from Kirosan Observatory Park. It makes a fitting stop after lunch.

Yoshiumi Rose Park has seasonal interest from mid-May into autumn

Imabari City lists 3,500 rose plants across 400 varieties and flowers from mid-May through the end of December. Consider it a spring or autumn detour.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Set aside plenty of time around lunch if seafood shichirin barbecue is your goal.
  • In summer, consider the heat at outdoor seats, during waits, on the boat, and at the lookout; leave room to choose a lighter meal instead.
  • For the sightseeing cruise, check in at least 30 minutes before departure, allow for the walk to Shitadami Port, and check weather, tides, and cancellations.
  • The station is close to Oshima-Minami IC, making a stop from the Imabari side easy to plan. From the Honshu side, drive across the island from Oshima-Kita IC. These interchanges serve limited travel directions, so plan your return direction too.
  • Kirosan is especially rewarding in clear weather or at sunset. If going for night views or bridge illumination, plan for a dark return journey.
  • Peak bloom and Rose-kan opening days affect a Yoshiumi Rose Park visit. Check recent updates if flowers are your main goal.
