Kasumi's detour notes

A place to regroup before the mountain road, rather than an all-day playground.

Kasumi Seto sees Mikawa as a quick place to eat, shop and rest. Check the parking and 24-hour toilets first, then restaurant hours, then what has arrived at the market. If time allows, make a short detour to Mimido Rock or Kamikuroiwa. Leaving space in the schedule makes it easier to enjoy Kumakogen's quiet setting and local food.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Mikawa sits on National Route 33 between Matsuyama and Kochi, in the former Mikawa area near where the Omogo and Kuma rivers meet. It is a modest stop, with a Y Shop, Mikawa Furusato Market, Kumayama Shokudo restaurant and 24-hour outdoor toilets together in one place for a meal, shopping and a toilet break during a mountain drive. The restaurant sometimes serves seasonal dishes such as amago trout set meals, chicken nanban and chilled noodles. At the market, look for highland vegetables, fruit, Mikawa tea, Mikawa somen noodles and handmade prepared foods. With more time, detours to Mimido Rock, the Kamikuroiwa Rock Shelter Site, Iwayaji Temple and Omogo Gorge add Kumakogen's rivers and mountains to the trip.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

One stop for food, shopping and toilets before or after a mountain drive

Mikawa is practical when driving National Route 33: roughly 35 car spaces, 24-hour outdoor toilets, a Y Shop open from morning and Kumayama Shokudo for lunch are together here. It works as a place to regroup before heading toward Matsuyama, Kochi or Omogo, more than as an all-day destination.

02

At Kumayama Shokudo, look for both river-raised amago and everyday set meals

The restaurant offers familiar choices such as chicken nanban, fried chicken, udon, soba and beef rice bowls. Official notices have also featured seasonal dishes including a salt-grilled amago trout set meal, using fish raised in Omogo's clear water, and chilled tantan noodles. Limited portions or dishes offered only on certain dates may sell out early; the shop or soft serve offers another option if lunch is unavailable.

03

Browse highland vegetables, fruit and prepared foods quickly at the market

Ehime's tourism site describes the direct-sale market as a gathering place for vegetables grown across Kumakogen. Official notices frequently announce summer peaches, Japanese plums, ume fruit, summer vegetables and seasonal soft serve flavors. Choose what is available on the day; Mikawa tea and Mikawa somen noodles also make easy-to-carry gifts for the drive.

04

Mimido Rock and the Kamikuroiwa Rock Shelter Site make worthwhile short detours

Nearby Mimido Rock stands at the confluence of the Kuma and Omogo rivers and is a scenic short drive away. The Kamikuroiwa Rock Shelter Site traces the area's history back to the earliest Jomon period. For school-age children, adding one nature or history stop after lunch can make the journey through Kumakogen more memorable.

05

Check rainfall restrictions and mountain weather before heading toward Omogo or Iwayaji

The official access page says National Route 33 closes when cumulative rainfall at its observation point exceeds 250 mm. Before extending your trip to Omogo Gorge, Iwayaji Temple or Furuiwaya, check road and weather conditions. If conditions are poor, a meal and shopping at the station make a practical alternative.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

While traveling between Matsuyama and Kochi

A 30-minute break on National Route 33

After parking, use the outdoor toilets first. Pick up drinks or small gifts at the Y Shop and general store, then choose a piece of fruit or some vegetables at the market. If more mountain road lies ahead, this short stop can work better than waiting for a full meal.

Parking → outdoor toilets → Y Shop and general store → Furusato Market → departure

There are fewer parking spaces than at a large roadside station. Around midday on holidays, plan your next stop and keep the visit brief.

A drive arriving around 11 a.m.

Make Kumayama Shokudo the centerpiece of lunch

If lunch is the goal, check the restaurant's last order time first. Alongside regular set meals, udon and soba, seasonal amago trout meals and chilled noodles may appear. Arrive early in case they sell out. After eating, rest briefly in the dining area before visiting the store.

Parking → restaurant → store and Furusato Market → rest → departure

Seasonal and daily dishes change. If lunch is unavailable, leave room for the store, sweets or another nearby rest stop.

A day when children would enjoy a little extra discovery

Add a short nature and history visit at Mimido Rock and Kamikuroiwa

After food and toilets at the station, see the rivers and rock at nearby Mimido Rock, then visit the Jomon exhibits at the Kamikuroiwa Rock Shelter Site. School-age children can connect the river confluence, unusual limestone formations and Jomon life in a short circuit.

Michi-no-Eki Mikawa → Mimido Rock → Kamikuroiwa Rock Shelter Site → National Route 33

Water depth and current around Mimido Rock can change suddenly. With small children, enjoy the view from the bank rather than planning river play.

Adults visiting Shikoku pilgrimage temples and school-age children comfortable with walking

Continue to Iwayaji Temple and Furuiwayaso

Iwayaji is a mountain pilgrimage temple reached on foot along an approach, rather than a temple you can drive right up to. Eat and use the toilets at the station first. After the visit, a day-use bath at Furuiwayaso can ease the fatigue of the mountain drive.

Michi-no-Eki Mikawa → Iwayaji Temple → Furuiwayaso → return trip

The approach to Iwayaji has slopes and stone steps. Allow time and wear suitable shoes; reconsider this outing in rain or heat or with very young children.

A clear day for a river walk

Make a final stop before Omogo Gorge

Before going to Omogo Gorge, stop at Mikawa for drinks, toilets and a lunch plan. The gorge changes with the seasons and weather, and summer riversides and autumn foliage can draw crowds. Recheck your plans at the station before driving on.

Michi-no-Eki Mikawa → Omogo Gorge → toward Omogo Mountain Museum if time allows

Rainfall restrictions, rockfalls and trail conditions can change plans. Follow current road information and tourism association guidance.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★☆☆

Good for a toilet stop and quick shopping.

There are multipurpose toilets indoors and outdoors. Keep the restaurant and market visit short; check signs on site for nursing or diaper-changing facilities.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Best for a brief meal and a sweet treat.

This is not a station with large play equipment. Soft serve, a drink and a toilet stop can refresh a child; avoid plans that require going down onto the riverbank or rocks.

Ages 4–6
★★★☆☆

Suited to a short stop to view Mimido Rock.

The river has places where it becomes suddenly deep or fast. Keep children close and focus on the view or a photo.

Primary school age
★★★★☆

Easy to extend into a learning trip to Kamikuroiwa Rock Shelter Site or Omogo Gorge.

Jomon exhibits, rock formations and clear rivers can fit into one day. For Omogo Gorge or Iwayaji, check the weather and wear walking shoes.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A short break suits the station itself

The station is modest in size, with toilets, a store, a restaurant and a produce market for a quick visit. A 30–60 minute pause before or after the Route 33 mountain road may suit it better than a long stay.

Seasonal product notices change quickly, with something to discover in the shop

As of July 2026, official notices had recently featured peach soft serve, peaches, Japanese plums, summer gift sets and chilled tantan noodles. Choosing from what is there on the day may work better than relying on a single item.

An early lunch improves your chance of an amago set meal

An official notice has featured a salt-grilled amago trout set meal, using fish raised in Omogo's clear water, limited to 10 servings. Serving dates change, so treat it as a welcome find and arrive early for lunch.

With children, plan a clear break rather than a long play session

Facility information lists indoor and outdoor multipurpose toilets, wheelchair loans and Wi-Fi. The practical family plan is a meal, a sweet treat, toilets and a short nearby detour rather than a long play session.

Mimido Rock is close, but river safety comes first

The Kumakogen tourism association warns that water around Mimido Rock can become suddenly deep or fast. It is an attractive scenic stop, but with toddlers it is safer to enjoy the view than to plan river play.

Weather and walking conditions shape visits to Omogo Gorge and Iwayaji

Omogo Gorge offers trails and autumn foliage; Iwayaji involves an approach walk to a mountain temple. Keep plans flexible around rain, heat, footwear and companions' stamina, with the roadside station as a rest stop.
