How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First, on arrival
Decide whether to visit Osakanakan or eat and shop first

An aquarium visit means a longer stay. If time is short, start with the toilets, Kagomori Market and &pan.

With children
Make Osakanakan the main stop

Penguin and otter activity times vary by day and season. Check the day's notices at the entrance before going around.

For lunch
Yuzuruha's aosa udon, game meat curry or unaju eel rice

The restaurant runs from midday into late afternoon. For a later arrival, keep &pan and market prepared foods in mind.

To take home
Peaches, Nanko plum products, vegetables, bento and prepared foods

Seasonal goods vary with the time of day. Come earlier if you have something specific in mind.

In rain or extreme heat
Keep the visit short and center it on the aquarium, glass workshop and food

A mostly indoor plan is less tiring than forcing in the outdoor farm or nearby walks.

For a half day
Continue to Poppo Onsen, Kagogamori Castle ruins or Nametoko Gorge

The onsen works well at the end; the castle ruins call for a walk; and the gorge is best when weather and time allow.

Highlights

Niji no Mori Park Matsuno is worth more than a toilet and shopping stop on National Route 381. See pirarucu and Japanese lates at Osakanakan, the Shimanto River themed aquarium; browse peaches, processed Nanko plums, bento and prepared foods at Kagomori Market; and, if time allows, visit the glass workshop or Mori no Kuni Farm. For lunch, Yuzuruha serves udon with aosa seaweed and game meat curry; for something lighter, try bread and coffee at &pan. Poppo Onsen at Matsumaru Station, the ruins of Kagogamori Castle, and Nametoko Gorge make this a useful stop on a southern Ehime drive or a starting point for a half day trip.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

An aquarium makes it easy to plan a longer stop

The draw here is more than shopping: Osakanakan can be a destination in itself. Its creatures span the Shimanto River from headwaters to estuary, alongside pirarucu, Japanese lates, Asian small clawed otters and penguins. For families, a break can become a small outing. Indoor time also helps on hot or rainy days.

02

Eat and shop for a taste of Matsuno's seasons

At Kagomori Market, look for freshly picked vegetables, bento, prepared foods, peaches and products made with Nanko plums, among the goods of this forest region. For lunch, Yuzuruha offers aosa seaweed udon, Matsuno game meat keema curry and unaju, grilled eel over rice. On lighter days, head to &pan. Keeping the bakery and market in mind gives you options beyond a single restaurant meal.

03

Nearby outings bring more of Matsuno into the trip

With more time, finish at Poppo Onsen in Matsumaru Station, walk the Kagogamori Castle ruins, or head to Nametoko Gorge for the sound of water in the forest. The station is enjoyable in itself, but a short detour brings together a town on a Shimanto River tributary, a hilltop castle, a gorge and a hot spring in one drive.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Families with preschool and elementary school children; rainy or hot days on a southern Ehime drive

Make the aquarium the main event of a family break

Centering the visit on Osakanakan turns a toilet stop into something children can enjoy. See the large tanks with pirarucu and Japanese lates, catch the penguin and otter activities if available, then move on to bread, soft serve or the market. Because much of the visit can be indoors, it is easier to plan when the weather is uncertain.

Parking → Osakanakan → &pan or Kagomori Market → restaurant or light snack

Event and animal activity times can change. Check the day's notices before entering.

A break around lunchtime while traveling toward Uwajima or Shimanto

Make a short food and shopping stop feel like Matsuno

Even without the aquarium, Kagomori Market, Yuzuruha and &pan offer a sense of this place. Have aosa seaweed udon or game meat curry for lunch, choose bread and coffee for a lighter stop, or take home peaches and processed Nanko plum products. The range helps when travel companions want different amounts to eat.

National Route 381 → parking → Kagomori Market → Yuzuruha or &pan

The restaurant's last order is fairly early. For a late afternoon stop, consider the market and bakery first.

Making something on a rainy day; adults and elementary school children or older wanting a travel keepsake

Add hands on time at the glass workshop and farm

Mori no Kuni Glass Workshop lists sandblasting and glassblowing experiences, while Mori no Kuni Farm offers tomato picking and BBQ. You can add time to make or harvest something rather than just look around. If planning an activity, check by phone or ask about the day's availability and allow a longer stay.

Osakanakan reception and glass workshop → Kagomori Market → Mori no Kuni Farm

Glassblowing depends on bookings, closing days and production schedules. The workshop can also be hot in summer.

Days of driving until evening; cooling off after the gorge or castle ruins

Finish at Poppo Onsen and give the driver a break

Mori no Kuni Poppo Onsen inside Matsumaru Station is a few minutes by car from the roadside station. Eat and shop at the station, walk the Kagogamori Castle ruins, then visit the onsen for a compact southern Ehime trip. It also gives the driver time to sit and rest.

Roadside station → Kagogamori Castle ruins or Matsumaru Kaido → Mori no Kuni Poppo Onsen

Poppo Onsen has closing days, including the second Monday. Check its current schedule if the onsen is your main goal.

Spring greenery, autumn leaves or summer water at the gorge; canyoning or nature walks

Use the station to prepare for and recover from a gorge trip

Nametoko Gorge lies farther into the mountains than a casual extension of a station stroll. Use the toilets and pick up drinks and a light meal before setting off, then return for food or shopping. Its fresh greenery, autumn leaves and summer waters are appealing, but plan around weather, road conditions and enough time for the visit.

Roadside station → Nametoko Gorge → roadside station or Poppo Onsen

Avoid heading into the gorge after rain or late in the day, and allow enough time and suitable footwear.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages one and under
★★★☆☆

A nursing room and diaper changing facilities are listed, and the aquarium can work for a short visit. For longer visits, consider the stroller, sounds, dimmer tanks and places to rest.

Ages two to three
★★★★☆

Large fish, penguins and otters are easy to recognize, and you can switch to the bakery or market when interest fades. It may be easier not to plan the whole visit around event times.

Ages four to six
★★★★★

The aquarium, listed feeding activities, watching glassmaking and tomato picking can hold their interest. At this age the station can be a destination in itself.

Elementary school children
★★★★★

Shimanto River wildlife, the audio guide, sandblasting, bicycle rental and Kagogamori Castle ruins offer ways to combine learning and play.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Aquarium families and quick stop visitors can take different paths on the same site

Reviews and travel accounts describe both families coming for Osakanakan and travelers stopping off Route 381 for the market or bread. When companions want different things, one group can visit the aquarium while another shops and rests.

Check today's notices at the entrance instead of planning entirely around animal times

Penguin and otter feeding times are appealing, but activities involving animals can be canceled or changed. Check the day's notices when entering and leave room to enjoy them if they happen.

The bakery and market offer alternatives at the lunch rush

The restaurant advises that some planned dishes may be suspended. If it is busy at lunch or you arrive late, switching to &pan or prepared foods at the market can still make for a good break.

In summer, consider the heat at the workshop and outdoor activities

Official guidance warns of summer heat in the glass workshop. Make the aquarium the indoor focus, and keep glassblowing or farm time shorter according to how you feel and how much time you have.
