Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First on arrival
Find parking and the toilets before browsing the shop

Parking is limited. At lunch and on weekends, check where to park and how to leave before settling in.

For a meal
Shirokawa pork bacon rice bowl at Tomari

Generally 10:30–15:00. Bacon, pork shoulder, a soft-cooked egg and soup curry show the range of the directly operated meat producer.

For something sweet
Mont Blanc desserts and Japanese chestnut shaved ice at Ippuku Chaya

The selection of Japanese chestnut sweets varies with season and stock. Look for shaved ice in hot weather and Mont Blanc-style sweets throughout the year.

To take home
Bacon, sausages, kuri kinton and Omoi Kuri

Plan cooling for refrigerated or frozen products. Kuri kinton, a chestnut sweet, has a relatively short shelf life, so consider when you will give it to someone.

To add a nearby stop
Shikoku Seiyo Geomuseum or Gallery Shirokawa

Cultural sites are within walking distance or a short transfer. Many close Monday or Tuesday, leaving fewer options for a Tuesday visit.

To unwind afterward
Hosenbo Onsen

After eating and shopping, a hot spring about 15 minutes away by car can turn a Route 197 drive into a half-day outing.

Highlights

Kinahaiya Shirokawa is not a sprawling complex. Its draw is clear: products from the directly operated Shirokawa Shizen Bokujo farm and Shirokawa Shizen Nojo, a Shirokawa pork bacon rice bowl at Tomari, Mont Blanc desserts at Ippuku Chaya, and bacon and chestnut sweets to take away. The parking area is small, so allow time around lunch. With 24-hour toilets and a rest shelter modeled on a traditional chado roadside shelter, it is an easy stop for food and shopping on Route 197, with geopark sites and a hot spring nearby.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A small station with standout shopping

Look first at what is on the shelves, rather than the size of the site. Bacon, sausages and ham from Shirokawa Shizen Bokujo, Japanese chestnut sweets from Shirokawa Shizen Nojo, plus local vegetables and processed foods make the mountain drive tangible in what you take home. If you buy chilled meat products, plan where this stop falls on your return journey.

02

Choose Shirokawa bacon for a meal and Japanese chestnuts for dessert

Tomari serves a Shirokawa pork bacon rice bowl and soup curry. Ippuku Chaya offers a generously filled Mont Blanc dorayaki (a pancake sandwich), drinkable Mont Blanc, grilled bacon and grilled frankfurters. You can stop for a full meal or just add something sweet.

03

Plan around Tuesday, Wednesday and the short lunch window

The shop is open 9:00–18:00, while Tomari generally runs 10:30–15:00 and Ippuku Chaya 10:30–17:30. The main station is listed as closed Tuesday and Ippuku Chaya Wednesday. Check the day and time if you are coming to eat; if you miss lunch, focus on shopping instead.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive around lunchtime toward or from Seiyo-Uwa IC, Nomura or Hiyoshi

Make Shirokawa bacon your Route 197 lunch stop

If you can arrive for lunch, aim for Tomari’s Shirokawa pork bacon rice bowl. Parking is limited; if spaces are nearly full, use the toilets and browse the shop first, then allow a little time to wait for a meal.

On Route 197, in front of the Shirokawa branch office; about 50 minutes by car from Seiyo-Uwa IC toward Shirokawa.

The main station and Tomari generally close Tuesday. The lunch window is short, so check the day and arrival time if the meal is your main reason to visit.

A return drive with a cooler bag, or a weekend direct-sale promotion

Take a taste of Oku-Iyo home, even on a shopping-only stop

The directly operated shop has bacon, sausages, ham, kuri kinton, Omoi Kuri chestnut sweets and Mont Blanc dorayaki. Since March 2026, weekend-only promotions have featured a different product category each week, adding another reason to browse.

Browse processed meats and chestnut sweets in the shop; consider a later purchase from the online store if needed.

For chilled or frozen goods and short-life chestnut sweets, account for travel time and when you will give them away.

A day without a full meal, or a sweet stop for children and companions

Take a short Japanese chestnut dessert break

Ippuku Chaya’s generously filled Mont Blanc dorayaki, drinkable Mont Blanc, abundant Mont Blanc ice cream and seasonal Japanese chestnut shaved ice make even a short stop distinctive. If eating outdoors, take the heat and crowds into account.

Stop at the toilets, then Ippuku Chaya, then the chestnut sweets in the shop, even on a short visit.

Ippuku Chaya generally closes Wednesday and may close irregularly. Seasonal items such as chestnut shaved ice vary in availability.

Rainy days, adult trips and educational stops for primary-school-age children or older

Add geology and art for a deeper look at Shirokawa

Add Shikoku Seiyo Geomuseum within walking distance, then Gallery Shirokawa and the Shirokawa History and Folklore Museum a short drive away, to see Shirokawa’s geology and mountain-village culture as well as its food. Some sites offer a shared admission ticket, making a longer visit easy to combine.

Kinahaiya Shirokawa → Shikoku Seiyo Geomuseum → Gallery Shirokawa.

Many nearby cultural sites close Monday and Tuesday. Since the station also generally closes Tuesday, another day is a safer choice.

A drive into the evening, or a longer break with children or adults

Extend a mountain drive to a half day with a hot spring

After eating and shopping, visit Hosenbo Onsen to relax after driving. It has a hot spring bath and a pool, so you can choose according to the season and your companions.

Kinahaiya Shirokawa → Hosenbo Onsen; about 15 minutes by car.

Hosenbo Onsen generally closes Tuesday, like the station, so plan another option for a Tuesday drive.

A nature walk or a deeper look at geopark scenery

Choose Mitaki Gorge on a clear day, or Anagami Cave when you can reserve

Mitaki Gorge Natural Park offers waterfalls and rocks of the Kurosegawa Tectonic Zone. Anagami Cave requires a reservation, so plan ahead rather than dropping in. Pairing the station’s food with these geological sites makes a fuller Seiyo Geopark day.

Kinahaiya Shirokawa → Mitaki Gorge Natural Park / Anagami Cave.

Weather, footing and reservation availability matter at the gorge and cave. With infants or toddlers, keep the outing short.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★☆☆☆

The 24-hour toilets and rest shelter help, but there is little space for extended play within the station. Best for a short break.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Sweets and light food are convenient, but parking is limited and this is not a station centered on outdoor play equipment. Locate the toilets first.

Ages 4–6
★★★☆☆

Children can enjoy Mont Blanc-style sweets and grilled frankfurters. A nearby geomuseum or hot spring can broaden the outing.

Primary school age
★★★★☆

Combine Shikoku Seiyo Geomuseum, Mitaki Gorge or Anagami Cave for a day of learning and outdoor activity.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Choose an easy-to-exit space in the small parking area

The listed capacity is around 18 standard cars, so expect it to feel tight at lunch. Visit the toilets first, assess how much you want to buy, then settle in for a meal.

  2. 2
Use the chado-style rest shelter and 24-hour toilets

This is not a large indoor rest facility, but it is a place to stretch during a drive and prepare for the next leg.

  3. 3
Eat early and plan cooling for purchases

Tomari generally serves lunch only. If buying processed meats, allow for the trip home and bring a cooler bag.

  4. 4
Choose a day other than Tuesday if finishing at the hot spring

Hosenbo Onsen can round out the break, but it is generally closed Tuesday, like the station.

Japanese chestnut shaved ice and other items change the menu in hot weather. Check the shop’s notices or official social media for availability that day.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Limited parking, strong food and shopping

Reviews and travel accounts often mention the roughly 18-car parking area along with the good selection of ham, sausages and Shirokawa processed foods. Check for an available space at busy times and enjoy a focused shop and meal stop.

The bacon bowl is a lunchtime favorite

Travel features describe the Shirokawa pork bacon bowl’s generous size, grilled aroma and freshness from the directly operated producer. Arrive within lunch hours if you want to try it.

For nighttime rests, rely on the toilets rather than a long stay

The 24-hour toilets make this a useful rest point, but the parking area is not large. Some overnight-vehicle accounts mention quiet conditions; for a rest stop, judge noise and vehicle movements and keep use to a nap or short break.

Tuesday reduces both station and nearby options

The main station, Tomari and Hosenbo Onsen generally close Tuesday; the geomuseum and Gallery Shirokawa often close Monday and Tuesday. It is worth planning this part of the trip for another day.

Nearby outings add more than food

Link the walkable Shikoku Seiyo Geomuseum with Gallery Shirokawa, Mitaki Gorge and Hosenbo Onsen to see Shirokawa’s geology, culture and hot spring. The station can be a short food stop or the center of a half-day route.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Shirokawa bacon and sausages are mainly chilled or frozen; a cooler bag helps with purchases for the drive home.

  • For Mitaki Gorge or Anagami Cave, check weather, footing and whether a reservation is needed before setting out.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A full meal

Shirokawa pork bacon rice bowl / Shirokawa pork bacon rice bowl with soft-cooked egg / Shirokawa-style soup curry rice

Time lunch around Tomari. Its own bacon and sausages make this the clearest food expression of the station.

Generally 10:30–15:00, closed Tuesday. Plan for the short lunch service.

A lighter bite

Shirokawa-style meat udon or soba / Shirokawa-style meat or salt ramen / grilled bacon

If a rice meal feels too heavy, these still offer the savory flavor of the local meat products.

Menus and availability may change.

A sweet break

Generously filled Mont Blanc dorayaki / drinkable Mont Blanc / generous Mont Blanc ice cream / Japanese chestnut shaved ice

Enjoy Shirokawa Japanese chestnuts after a meal or during a short break; good for children and companions with a sweet tooth.

Ippuku Chaya generally closes Wednesday and may close irregularly. Check availability of seasonal items.

Take-home shopping

Shirokawa bacon / coarse-ground sausages / kuri kinton / Omoi Kuri / Omoware Kuri

Core local purchases. A weekend direct-sale promotion may make the shopping especially worthwhile.

Check refrigeration or freezing needs, shelf life and time without cooling.
