From the port
About five minutes from Ikeda Port

Useful for toilets, a snack and planning just after arrival, or organizing souvenirs before departure.

Shopping and time for sunset

Dining ends earlier, so focus on the shop and the seaside view later in the day.

Ayano’s detour notes

Fit the ferry, dining hours and activity bookings together first.

Shodoshima Furusato Village can be a quick stop if you only visit the roadside station shop, or a longer stay with somen, plum soft serve, water activities, the pool, strawberry farm and hot spring. Check parking and toilets first, then the 15:00 dining close, and finally activity and ferry times. The island itinerary will feel less rushed.

Highlights

Roadside Station Shodoshima Furusato Village sits by the sea, about a five-minute drive from Ikeda Port, and offers more than a quick stop. In the shop, browse Shodoshima somen noodles, olives, soy sauce and tsukudani, ingredients simmered in soy sauce for serving with rice. The dining area offers fresh somen, hand-stretched somen, olive somen and plum soft serve. The hand-stretched somen hall, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), a summer family pool, strawberry farm, lodging and hot spring facilities are also part of the wider village area. Choose a short break or a half-day stay to suit your arrival port and the weather.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Somen for lunch, island flavors to take home

The dining area is generally open from 10:00 to 15:00. Fresh somen, hand-stretched somen and olive somen make good lunch choices. At the shop, you can browse Shodoshima olives, somen, soy sauce and tsukudani (savory ingredients simmered in soy sauce) together, making it easy to pick up island flavors even during a short break before or after a ferry.

02

Water activities and outdoor facilities just beyond the roadside station

Shodoshima Furusato Village is both a roadside station and a wider leisure area, with a marine station, kayaking and SUP, a fishing pier, an event plaza and a summer family pool. Plan a simple meal stop differently from a day of activities that calls for a change of clothes and reservations.

03

Close to Ikeda Port for an arrival or departure stop

It is about a five-minute drive from Ikeda Port and about 15 minutes from Tonosho Port. Stop for the first toilet break, snack and shopping after arriving on the island, or organize souvenirs before leaving. Check ferry and activity booking times so your break fits the schedule.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 30–60-minute break just after reaching the island

Get organized after arriving at Ikeda Port

After the ferry, use the toilets, briefly browse somen, soy sauce and tsukudani in the shop, and have somen if the dining area is open. Keeping purchases light on arrival leaves room to stop again on the way back without carrying too much luggage.

Ikeda Port → roadside station toilets, dining area and shop → island sightseeing.

The dining area generally closes at 15:00. If you arrive late, focus on the shop and toilets.

Summer holidays with preschool or elementary-school children

Spend a summer half-day at the pool and over somen

The seaside family pool is a summer highlight. Check opening dates and admission fees first, then return to the dining area or shop after swimming. This puts changing clothes, lunch and souvenir shopping into one outing.

Park → toilets → pool → somen and plum soft serve → shop.

The 2026 pool season was scheduled through August 23. Weather or facility conditions may change operations.

Kayaking, SUP or craft experiences

Use the roadside station as a meeting point on an activity day

For water activities, crafts, hand-making udon and nagashi somen (noodles caught from flowing water), confirm the day’s check-in point and time first. Even if some companions join an activity while others rest, the group can return to the shop, food, toilets and seaside view.

Meet at the roadside station → activity check-in → activity → shop and meal → port.

Availability depends on instructors, weather and season. Plan on booking ahead.

An island drive when the weather turns

Choose food and shopping on a rainy day

Instead of pushing ahead with water activities or the pool, consider a visit to the hand-stretched somen hall, the shop, the dining area and the hot spring bath with a view. Work and experiences may be cancelled in rain or rough weather, so keep indoor options in mind.

Shop → somen meal → somen hall or hot spring → port.

Check booking requirements and closure days before visiting the hand-stretched somen hall.

A short late-afternoon stop

Pick up souvenirs and enjoy the sunset before leaving

Even after dining hours, you can shop for somen, olives, soy sauce and tsukudani and spend a little time by the sea in the evening. Allow time to reach your departure port; the station works well as a final break.

Island sightseeing → roadside station shop and toilets → Ikeda or Tonosho Port.

From November through February, the shop and general management office generally close at 17:00.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Locate the toilets and an indoor rest spot first, and keep the stay fairly short.

Sun and wind affect the seaside and pool. Focus on dining, shopping and breaks in the car.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Plum soft serve or a short seaside walk can break up a drive.

Check pool depth and crowds, and avoid staying so long that the outing becomes tiring.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

The summer family pool, strawberry picking and crafts give children activities to look forward to.

Experiences may require reservations or operate only seasonally; choose one in advance rather than deciding on arrival.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

Combine kayaking, SUP, the somen hall and the pool for food and hands-on activities.

Put weather and safety conditions first for water activities. Switch to the somen hall or hot spring on rainy days.

Toilets

Use them after parking so meals, activities and the trip to the port are easier to manage.

Dining hours

Come early for lunch. Later in the day, turn to the shop and a sweet treat.

Summer swimming

The 2026 pool season, July 18–August 23, has ended. Wait for official information about next year’s dates.

Experiences

Conditions for kayaking, SUP, somen hall experiences and strawberry picking vary.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Use the toilets after parking

Make use of the parking area and 24-hour toilets before looking around the dining area or shop.

  2. 2
    Eat before 15:00

For somen, visit around lunchtime; switch to shopping if you arrive later in the afternoon.

  3. 3
    Keep walking distances comfortable

Even if you want a seaside or sunset view, allow time to return to the port and keep daylight for walking.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

A grassy plaza of about 70 m × 40 m under a retractable roof, used for light sports, music and food events.

Marine station

A seaward entrance with visitor berths, serving arrivals by sea and the setting for kayaking and SUP.

Hand-stretched somen hall

A place to consider for a tour or a chopstick-separation work experience, suited to a rainy day or learning about local food.

Strawberry farm

Strawberry picking from winter through spring. Pair a visit with the roadside station parking and toilets.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Arriving late? Choose the shop over a meal

The dining area is generally open from 10:00 to 15:00. If you arrive in the evening, focus on the shop, toilets, seaside view and travel to the port instead of planning a somen lunch.

Plan activities around reservations and weather

Kayaking, SUP, crafts, hand-making udon and nagashi somen (catching noodles as they flow in water) vary with season, instructors and weather. Use the roadside station as a meeting and rest point, and choose an activity in advance.

For a summer family visit, plan for food and changing after the pool

The family pool is a summer highlight, but sun, changing clothes, lunch and shopping all matter. With young children, break up swimming with plum soft serve or somen instead of staying in the water too long.

Include a toilet stop when planning the strawberry farm

The strawberry farm is described as about a two-minute walk from the roadside station, whose parking area visitors use. The farm also says it has no toilet for visitors, so families with children may want to use the roadside station toilets before checking in.

Keep the somen hall and hot spring in mind on rainy days

A tour of the somen hall is free but requires an advance reservation; work may be cancelled in rain or rough weather. If water activities are difficult, check whether a tour is running and consider adding the hot spring bath with a view at the Kokumin Shukusha lodging area.

The nearby port also helps on the return trip

Ikeda Port is described as about a five-minute drive away, making the station useful for final shopping and toilets before a ferry. If departing from Tonosho or Kusakabe Port, allow for both the drive and ferry check-in.
