Ayano's Mino notes

At a small station, plan your meal and place to rest.

Ayano Asakura sees Michi-no-Eki Mino as a place to eat Mino rice, pause by the Yoshino River, and, if you wish, continue to an onsen or waterfall. The car park is not large. Plan lunch, shopping, toilets, and the terrace together to enjoy Mino's relaxed pace.

Keep it simple: the restaurant and terrace make this a pleasant place to rest.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Mino is a small roadside station overlooking the Yoshino River on Prefectural Route 12, the Naruto–Ikeda Line. Refreshed in August 2023, it centers on Nonono Shokudo, a shop inside the restaurant, a temporary winter mandarin stand, and a second-floor terrace, where you can enjoy Mino rice and vegetables at an unhurried pace. This is not a sprawling market: parking accommodates around 20 standard cars. Have a set lunch or house-made ramen, enjoy the river view, then make the short descent to the Tachino outcrop of the Median Tectonic Line below the stairs. Add Momiji Onsen, Ryuzu and Kongo Falls, or Kenko to Fureai no Mori for a Mino half-day of food, shopping, rest, and a little nature.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Make a short break count with a view of the Yoshino River

Tokushima tourism information and the Shikoku Regional Development Bureau describe this Route 12 stop as a place to see the Yoshino River and beautiful sunsets. A few minutes on the second-floor terrace after lunch can turn a routine break into a memorable pause.

02

Visit Nonono Shokudo for Mino rice and homestyle set meals

The official tourism-area guide highlights Nonono Shokudo, local meals, and house-made ramen. Think of this as a place for a midday meal featuring Mino rice, rather than a large food court.

03

Make the temporary mandarin stand a winter destination

Nishi-Awa tourism and Sato no Monogatari describe a temporary winter mandarin stand operating around December to March, with varieties such as Harehime, hassaku, and Dekopon. Seasonal shopping can become the memory of this stop.

04

Descend from beside the car park to a tectonic outcrop

Miyoshi Geopark says you can observe the fractured zone of the Ikeda Fault, part of the Median Tectonic Line, at Michi-no-Eki Mino. Looking at the geology underfoot before or after eating adds another dimension to the visit.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A lunch break near Prefectural Route 12 or National Route 192

A satisfying short break: lunch and the Yoshino River

Mino is not a station for a long circuit of shops. Park, eat Mino rice or ramen at Nonono Shokudo, then look over the Yoshino River from the second-floor terrace. Even 30 minutes to an hour can make for a satisfying break.

Parking → restaurant → shop → second-floor terrace.

Restaurant hours are approximately 10:00–15:00, with last order at 14:30. Check Instagram for regular closing days and temporary changes.

A stop focused on eating and shopping

Take home winter mandarins and rice

Around December to March, the temporary mandarin stand can be a reason to visit in its own right. Varieties such as Harehime, hassaku, and Dekopon change through the season. Pair them with Mino rice and local vegetables for meals at home.

Mandarin stand → shop → restaurant → return journey.

Days and hours of winter sales can change; check the latest post.

Primary-school children and older, geology enthusiasts, and adults on a short detour

Take a quick look at the Median Tectonic Line and Yoshino River

Stairs beside the car park descend to the Tachino outcrop of the Median Tectonic Line. Miyoshi Geopark describes this rare exposed rock. See both the river and the geology before or after your meal for a fuller sense of Mino.

Restaurant or terrace → Median Tectonic Line outcrop → Yoshino River view.

The outcrop is fragile. Watch your footing, read the signs, and do not stand on it.

The end of a drive or a nature stop on a fine day

Add an onsen or waterfalls for a half-day trip

For a longer outing, continue from the station to Momiji Onsen, Ryuzu and Kongo Falls, or Kenko to Fureai no Mori. Eating, shopping, taking in the view, then finishing with a hot-spring bath or outdoor play makes a fitting Mino half-day.

Roadside station → Momiji Onsen / Ryuzu and Kongo Falls / Kenko to Fureai no Mori.

Before heading into the hills, check weather, roads, opening hours, and onsen closure days.

Varieties such as Harehime, hassaku, and Dekopon change through the season, giving winter visitors a reason to stop.

The Median Tectonic Line outcrop is a distinctive short detour

Miyoshi Geopark identifies the outcrop as a prefectural natural monument and warns visitors not to stand on it. View it with care.

Ayu, yuzu, shiso, and Japanese black tea add seasonal variety

Local publications and visitor accounts mention weekend set meals, wild ayu sweetfish, yuzu squash, and shiso squash. Look for these as seasonal possibilities, not guaranteed menu items.
