How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Start here
Parking and 24-hour toilets

The small parking area holds about 39 cars and is also used as a free base for walking the townscape.

Eat and shop
Aigura souvenirs and café

A shop and café in a converted old indigo storehouse, offering souvenirs, indigo-related goods, and a light lunch break.

For a walk
Udatsu townscape

Walk toward the Yoshida Residence and Funatsukiba Park. Visit facilities with set admission hours first.

With children
Good for a short stroll

There is no large playground. Combine toilets, baby facilities, a short town walk, and a sweet treat.

On a rainy day
Yoshida Residence, indigo dyeing, and Odeonza

Indoor visits and experiences offer alternatives; allow extra time to manage wet footing and umbrellas while walking the town.

Ayano's detour notes

Do not miss the few steps beyond the parking area.

Ai Land Udatsu's appeal does not depend on the size of its shop. The parking area, toilets, Aigura, Yoshida Residence, and townscape are close together, so you can shorten the visit according to children's energy and site closing times. Leave room for a break at Aigura before trying to eat, shop, and walk all at once.

Highlights

Roadside Station Ai Land Udatsu is a short drive from Wakimachi Interchange. Park here and walk straight into the Udatsu townscape, an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Rather than a large farm-produce market, the station serves as a starting point with 24-hour parking and toilets. From there, visit Aigura, a converted indigo storehouse with souvenirs and a café, the former home of indigo merchant Sanao Yoshida, the riverside Funatsukiba Park, and indigo-dyeing experiences. For a short break, use the toilets and Aigura; with an hour, walk the townscape; with half a day, add the Odeonza theater or Anabuki River to see more of Mima.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Use the roadside station as a gateway to the town

Ai Land Udatsu is not a station built around a large produce hall where you spend hours. Park, use the toilets, choose a snack or souvenir at Aigura, then enter the white-walled Udatsu townscape. Its proximity to Wakimachi Interchange makes it an easy cultural stop between the Tokushima City area and western Tokushima.

02

Aigura is the small center for breaks and shopping

Aigura occupies a storehouse linked to the Yoshida Residence. You can find Tokushima and Mima souvenirs, indigo-dyed goods, and a café break in one place. Think of it as a spot to rest lightly while looking toward the townscape and to choose something to take home, rather than a place for a large meal.

03

See the indigo merchants' town through the Yoshida Residence and Funatsukiba Park

The Udatsu townscape preserves Wakimachi's history as a gathering and trading center for indigo. Visit the Yoshida Residence before walking the street: the udatsu, raised walls between roofs traditionally associated with fire protection, and the line of white walls then speak to merchant pride as well as practical building wisdom.

04

At this small station, focus your plans on busy days

Parking is limited. During events and tourist seasons, families may find it easier to move promptly from the toilets to Aigura and then the historic sites. Keep café snacks or souvenir shopping as options instead of relying on one meal plan; that gives you room to adjust to parking queues and closing times.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A break on the Tokushima Expressway, or when children need to get out of the car

A 30-minute stop for the toilets and Aigura

After parking, locate the toilets and baby facilities first. If time is short, choose a sweet or souvenir at Aigura and look at the entrance to the townscape before leaving; even that gives you a taste of this station.

Parking → toilets → Aigura → departure.

Parking is limited. During tourist seasons, a shorter stop may be easier to manage.

A first visit to Mima with time for a little cultural sightseeing

Walk the Udatsu townscape in an hour

Pick out a break at Aigura, then visit the Yoshida Residence first if you can make its opening hours. A short walk past the street's white walls and udatsu shows why the station is a gateway to the town, not just a rest stop.

Parking → Aigura → Yoshida Residence → Udatsu townscape → shopping at Aigura.

The Yoshida Residence and similar sites have admission hours. If you arrive late, check the paid sites first.

Families facing bad weather or wishing to limit walking distance

On rainy days, favor indoor sights and indigo dyeing

Shorten the outdoor walk and focus on the Yoshida Residence, an indigo-dyeing workshop, or Wakimachi Theater Odeonza. Dyeing experiences have acceptance deadlines and closing days, so contact the workshop beforehand if the experience is your main goal.

Roadside station → Yoshida Residence → indigo workshop or Odeonza → break at Aigura.

Watch children's footing while walking the townscape with umbrellas. For strollers, judge steps and stone paving as you go.

Families with elementary-school children who want outdoor play

Add Anabuki River for a summer half-day

See the townscape and Aigura in the morning, then travel toward Anabuki River in hot weather for a half-day of heritage and river play. Because it is a natural river, check water levels, parking, changing facilities, and toilets before entering.

Roadside station → Udatsu townscape → an Anabuki River play spot.

Anabuki River is popular in summer. Put rising water, weather, crowded parking, life jackets, and other safety preparations first.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Suitable for toilets, diaper changing, and a short rest.

A nursing room and diaper-changing table are listed. This is not a station for long play, so keep Aigura and the entrance walk brief.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A short town walk and sweet treat can work well.

Watch stone paving and roadside movement. Avoid packing in too many historic sites, and finish at Aigura when children tire.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

White walls, indigo dyeing, and the old theater make good talking points.

Check the acceptance deadline and duration for indigo dyeing, and choose a day when children can wait. Indoor visits also suit rainy days.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Easy to combine town history with a summer visit to Anabuki River.

Talk about indigo merchants, udatsu, and the river landing as you walk. Prioritize safety preparations for summer river play.

Baby facilities

A nursing room, diaper-changing table, and multipurpose toilet are listed. Locate them on arrival.

Play equipment

Plan a short town walk and rest, rather than a visit centered on play equipment.

Strollers

Usable around the station, but assess steps and crowds in the townscape and at facility entrances.

Rain

Consider the Yoshida Residence, indigo workshop, and Odeonza. Check closing days and acceptance times.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Aigura

A center for souvenirs, café breaks, and the station stamp, a collectible stamp usually pressed into a travel booklet. Published opening hours differ, so check current official or tourism guidance if you have a particular purpose.

Yoshida Residence

The principal site for seeing an indigo merchant's home. Visit before walking the townscape to better understand its udatsu and storehouses.

Funatsukiba Park

An outdoor place to sense Wakimachi's past as a river-transport and indigo trading center on the Yoshino River. Good for a short walk in fair weather.

Udatsu townscape

This street draws visitors during events. On ordinary days it is a quiet town walk; allow extra time and parking during the winter flower-arrangement exhibition.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The parking side does not show everything

Visitor accounts and reviews suggest that the parking area and toilets are easiest to spot, while the shop and café may be less obvious. Walk a few dozen steps toward Aigura and the Yoshida Residence to find the heart of the station.

Yoshida Residence visits depend on admission hours

The townscape is close by, but the Yoshida Residence has a last admission time. If arriving late, visit the historic site first and leave shopping or the café for afterward.

The winter flower exhibition makes the whole townscape a destination

Udatsu wo Ikeru, a flower-arrangement event generally listed from mid-January through late February, takes visitors around the Yoshida Residence, Odeonza, and other townscape sites. Use the station as your starting point and plan parking and admission times early.

Anabuki River expands a summer family outing

The area around the station centers on cultural sightseeing. For elementary-school children who want more activity, add Anabuki River as a separate summer destination. Check weather, water levels, parking, and places to change before river play.

Check acceptance times before planning indigo dyeing

Indigo-dyeing workshops offer a distinctive local experience, but have closing days, experience acceptance deadlines, and set durations. If it is a main goal for children or a rainy day, check opening days and acceptance times beforehand.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The parking area is small, with about 39 car spaces. On weekends and event days, moving into the townscape promptly may be easier than staying at the station for a long time.
  • Published Aigura hours vary, including 9:00–17:30 and 9:00–18:00. If visiting for a meal or café break, check the latest facility information.
  • The Yoshida Residence charges admission and has a last admission time. From September 26 to November 15, 2026, it hosts the Light-carving Art Exhibition in Udatsu, with different admission prices from usual. If arriving late, check whether you can visit before shopping.
  • With children, plan around toilets, a sweet treat, a short town walk, and indoor sightseeing; do not expect a large playground.
  • Indigo-dyeing experiences may close on Tuesdays and have acceptance deadlines. Confirm ahead if one is your main rainy-day activity.
  • Before adding Anabuki River in summer, check water levels, weather, parking, life jackets, and places to change.
  • During the winter Udatsu wo Ikeru event, the whole townscape becomes the destination. Use the station for parking and toilets, and allow extra time.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Sweets
    Aigura ice cream
A quick break before or after walking the town. Check Aigura's same-day offerings.
  • Lunch break
    Aigura light meals and café
Good for a pause while visiting the Yoshida Residence and townscape. Check the shop's café hours.
  • Shopping
    Tokushima and Mima souvenirs
Choose indigo-dyed goods, local specialties, and sweets as reminders of your town walk.
  • Local character
    Small indigo-dyed goods
Take home a piece of Wakimachi's indigo heritage. Check each item's color-transfer and washing instructions.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A quick sweet treat

Aigura ice cream and café drinks

When a toilet stop feels too brief, this adds a quick taste of the townscape gateway.

Serving hours can change with shop operations, so check early if arriving in the evening.

A light lunch break

Aigura light meals and café

Best for a breather with views toward the Yoshida Residence and townscape, rather than a heavy meal.

Some listings give café hours of approximately 11:00–14:00. Have another option if visiting later.

Take something home

Tokushima and Mima specialties, sweets, and small indigo-dyed goods

Choosing a souvenir after walking the indigo merchants' town makes it a reminder of the visit.

An easy option with children

Sweets, drinks, and a short shopping stop

Even if paid tours or experiences are too much for their age, a brief Aigura break makes it easy to end the visit.

Do not plan around a large playground; keep walks and breaks short.

On event days

Townscape events and Aigura

For events such as Udatsu wo Ikeru, decide on parking and admission times before planning a meal.

Events may bring crowds and changes to opening hours.
