Kamiichinomiya Oawa Shrine

A short trip from the station leads to a shrine dedicated to a deity of food.

Ayano’s stopover notes

Choose a sudachi treat, then decide between the onsen and the shrine.

Ayano Takase sees this station as a place to decide what to eat and buy in Kamiyama first. Rather than touring a large facility, browse sudachi, shiitake, plums, Japanese sweets, and handmade woodwork, and take home one taste of the town. Then choose whether to rest at the onsen, walk to the shrine of a food deity, or, in fine weather, continue to the falls. Even a short stop can become a drive through the mountain countryside.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Onsen no Sato Kamiyama is a small stop on National Route 438 where you can shop for seasonal Kamiyama produce, take a break over a light meal, and continue to nearby Kamiyama Onsen or Kamiichinomiya Oawa Shrine. Browse sudachi citrus, shiitake mushrooms, plums, wild vegetables, Japanese sweets, woodwork, and pottery for a taste of the mountains beyond Tokushima city, even on a short visit.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Kamiyama flavors fill a small market

Sudachi citrus, shiitake mushrooms, plums, wild vegetables, flowers, Japanese sweets, Kamiyama sudachi cider, and dressings are the main attractions. This is a place to compare goods from local farmers and makers, rather than a large produce market.

02

Take a break at Shunsai Chaya or with seasonal ice cream

Shunsai Chaya serves light meals centered on udon and soba noodles and is described as using local ingredients. Stop for a light lunch, or take a shorter break with sweets flavored with sudachi or plum before or after the mountain roads.

03

The onsen in the name points to a separate, nearby bath

There are no bathing facilities inside the roadside station. For a hot-spring visit, buy souvenirs and have a light meal here, then go to nearby Kamiyama Onsen Hotel Shiki no Sato & Iyashi no Yu for a soak and a rest afterward.

04

Continue to Oawa Shrine, a waterfall, or a forest park

Kamiichinomiya Oawa Shrine is within walking distance; Kamiyama Onsen, Amagoi Falls, and Tokushima Prefectural Kamiyama Forest Park are options by car. Pair food and shopping with a walk through the mountain countryside for a fuller visit to Kamiyama.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short stop on National Route 438 as you head into the mountains from Tokushima city

Buy a taste of Kamiyama in 30 minutes

After a toilet stop, look first at vegetables, shiitake, sudachi, and plum products at Shun no Ichi. Kamiyama Sudachi Cider, dressing, sudachi dacquoise, and Japanese sweets are easy take-home choices, even if you do not eat at the teahouse.

Parking → toilets → Shun no Ichi and shop → sudachi souvenirs → depart.

The market is small. Enjoy what arrived that day instead of counting on one particular item.

A weekend drive when you want a modest lunch

Break up a mountain drive with a light meal and sweets

Have udon or soba at Shunsai Chaya, then add Shunkan Ice Cream or Japanese sweets. Looking at sudachi, plum, and shiitake products first connects your meal with the town’s produce.

Shunsai Chaya → Shunkan Ice Cream → shop → nearby sights.

The teahouse is listed as closing earlier than the shop, so avoid arriving too late if you want lunch.

Adult travelers, couples on a drive, or a break after a pilgrimage or mountain walk

Make a half-day trip of Kamiyama Onsen

The station name may suggest a bath on site, but you need to go to nearby Kamiyama Onsen to bathe. Choose souvenirs at the station first, rest at the onsen, and return to the shop afterward if needed.

Michi-no-Eki Onsen no Sato Kamiyama → Kamiyama Onsen → journey home.

Kamiyama Onsen closing days and day-bathing hours may change. Check its official information if the bath is your main reason for visiting.

A day for a short walk and a sense of the local area

Walk to the shrine of a food deity before shopping

Kamiichinomiya Oawa Shrine is near the station and enshrines a deity associated with food. After walking its approach, choose sudachi or Japanese sweets for a souvenir with a connection to the place.

Roadside station → Kamiichinomiya Oawa Shrine → shopping at the roadside station.

The shrine approach and mountain paths may be slippery in some weather. With young children or on a rainy day, you can stay near the entrance.

A half-day drive centered on a nature walk

On a clear day, continue to the falls or forest park

If heading to Amagoi Falls or Tokushima Prefectural Kamiyama Forest Park, pick up drinks and a light meal at the station first. Allow for the footing at the falls and walking time in the park, then buy sudachi or shiitake on your way back.

Roadside station → Amagoi Falls or Kamiyama Forest Park → roadside station or Kamiyama Onsen.

Heat, rain, road conditions, and darkness on the return trip all matter in the mountains. Adjust nature outings to the weather.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Useful for a toilet stop and a short indoor break.

Use the multipurpose toilet and rest area for a brief stop. If adding the falls or shrine approach, consider carrying the child and check rain and heat.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Suited to an ice-cream break and brief shopping.

The small market is manageable but is not a place for long play. If adding the onsen or shrine, plan a break back at the car.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Easy to pair sudachi cider, ice cream, and a short shrine walk.

Food can provide a change of pace, and a walk near the entrance to Kamiichinomiya Oawa Shrine may be enough. In rain, shift toward shopping and the onsen.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Sudachi, shiitake, the wood exhibition space, falls, and shrine make good talking points.

Children can connect the town’s specialties with the surrounding nature. In fine weather, add Amagoi Falls or the forest park so the outing goes beyond shopping.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.
