Yuro’s Shiosai notes

Make time for the market and park as well as the fish meal.

Yuro Hozumi sees Shiosai Ichiba Hofu as more than a lunch stop. Browse the fresh fish market first, eat seafood at a dining area and choose something to take home on the way out. With children, head next door to Mebaru Park. This lets the harbor-market experience become part of the drive.

At Shiosai Ichiba Hofu, even choosing fish to take home can become part of a visit to Hofu’s waterfront.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A roadside station where buying fish takes center stage beside the fishing port

Shiosai Ichiba Hofu feels more like a visit to a harbor market than a typical roadside station. See fresh fish and processed products sold over the counter, eat seafood in a dining area, and choose fish and local goods to take home. Even a short stop gives you a sense of Hofu’s waterfront.

02

Keep lunch plans flexible

Options include seafood barbecue, rice bowls, set meals, light food and sweets, but the catch and each shop’s hours affect what is available. At lunchtime on holidays, look at the market and restaurants first, then decide whether to queue or choose takeaway or a light meal.

03

Mebaru Park next door gives families room to linger

When children need a break from the market, walk to adjacent Shin-Tsukiji-cho Disaster Prevention Square, known as Mebaru Park. It has large play equipment and play areas for different ages. Eating, shopping and play all fit into a small area.

04

A starting point for Hofu’s sea and history beyond Hofu Tenmangu

A short drive links the market with Mitajiri Salt Field Memorial Industrial Park, Eiunso, Hofu Tenmangu Shrine and Mount Ohira Summit Park. After a seafood lunch, the history of salt making and sites on the Hagi Okan historic route add another dimension to Hofu.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A weekend drive into town from Hofu East or Hofu West interchange

A 90-minute stop for seafood lunch and shopping

After parking, first browse the first-floor fresh fish market. For lunch, choose a seafood bowl, set meal or Umikoya 38. Pick up fish or local products to take home afterward so the stop offers more than a meal.

Parking → fresh fish market → lunch → local products → departure

Watch for Wednesday closure, individual shop hours and early fish-market closing depending on the catch.

Families with toddlers through elementary-school children

Half a day by the port with children

Eat early at the market, then walk to adjacent Mebaru Park. Separate areas for babies and toddlers, young children and older children help siblings of different ages find something to do.

Shiosai Ichiba Hofu → Mebaru Park → second-floor observation deck or sweets

In summer, plan around seaside heat and sun; in winter, the wind. Leave time to return indoors for a break.

Adults traveling for food and history

Connect Hofu’s port town with historic sites

After seafood, visit Mitajiri Salt Field Memorial Industrial Park or Eiunso to connect Hofu’s port, salt industry and Hagi Okan history in one day. If adding Hofu Tenmangu Shrine, eat earlier to leave enough time.

Shiosai Ichiba Hofu → Mitajiri Salt Field Memorial Industrial Park → Eiunso → Hofu Tenmangu Shrine

The salt-field park and Eiunso have limited opening days and admission hours; check their closures together.

Days when you want scenery after lunch

Add a view on a clear day

Take in Mount Ohira and the Seto Inland Sea from the second-floor observation deck. With more time, continue to Mount Ohira Summit Park. The change from the market’s waterfront to the mountaintop reveals Hofu’s landscape.

Shiosai Ichiba Hofu → second-floor observation deck → Mount Ohira Summit Park

Drive to the summit. Some stretches of the mountain road are narrow, so decide based on weather and your comfort driving.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Suitable for a brief indoor break and use of the diaper-changing table.

Hofu City lists a diaper-changing table in the accessible restroom in its Baby Station information. Keep shopping short to avoid market crowds and the coastal wind.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Eat at the market, then move to the young children’s equipment at Mebaru Park.

Rather than staying long in the fish market, switch to the neighboring park after eating. On hot days, the short distance back indoors helps.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Large play equipment and a seafood lunch can fill half a day.

The young children’s area and large equipment at Mebaru Park suit this age. Looking at the fish before eating can spark conversation about food.

Elementary-school age
★★★★★

Especially appealing on activity days such as ayu fish-catching and Hamo Fest.

Beyond the playground, talk about fish, the port, the disaster-prevention park, salt fields and historic sites. On event days, arrive early in case timed tickets are needed or items sell out.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Browse the first-floor market after parking

Check the fish selection and plan how to keep purchases chilled before eating, so you need not rush at departure.

  2. 2
Choose lunch with walking in mind

There are dining options on both the first and second floors. Choose based on crowds and how comfortably your group can move between them.

  3. 3
    Pick one historic stop

After lunch, adding one of Eiunso, the salt-field park or Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is less tiring than trying to fit in all three.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

An event featuring hamo, a summer specialty of Hofu. Years and dates vary, so check official news and tourism-association events in early summer.

Hofu Fish Festival

Seafood sales and a mock auction bring the fishing-port setting to life. Information often appears from autumn into winter; rely on the official announcement for the year you plan to visit.

Second-floor observation deck

Even on an ordinary shopping day, clear weather brings views toward Mount Ohira and the Seto Inland Sea. Keep the visit short in strong wind.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Fresh fish is more fun to choose early

The official site says shops may close early depending on the catch, and visitor accounts suggest fish shoppers tend to come in the morning. If buying after lunch, inspect the stalls first and plan what to purchase on your way out.

Mebaru Park makes children’s time easier to plan

Hofu City and the tourism association describe areas for babies and toddlers, young children, older children and inclusive play equipment. Children tired of shopping can switch to outdoor play within walking distance.

Check what is current for summer hamo and autumn–winter fish events

At Hamo Fest in June 2026, boxed lunches reportedly sold out early; official news listed a family ayu-catching event in July. Seasonal events can be lively, but expect sellouts and possible weather cancellations.

EV rapid charging is listed as available 24 hours, separately from shop hours

Hofu City says the rapid charger was updated to 50 kW and lists 24-hour availability with no regular closing day. If visiting only to charge outside shopping hours, check the city’s guidance separately from store hours.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Plan around Wednesday and New Year closures and individual shop hours; check official hours for each shop before a fish-and-food visit.
  • Fresh fish stalls may close early depending on the catch; come between morning and just before noon if shopping for fish is the priority.
  • For Hamo Fest, the fish festival or family events, arrive early in case items sell out or timed tickets are required.
  • For Mebaru Park, break outdoor time into shorter stretches in summer sun, winter wind or rain, with an indoor retreat in mind.
  • EV rapid-charger availability differs from shop hours; check Hofu City guidance when visiting only to charge.
  • The second-floor observation deck suits a clear-day detour, but avoid lingering in strong wind.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Seafood lunch

Seafood bowls, set meals, charcoal-grilled barbecue

Arrive during the 11 o’clock hour and check the market and restaurant crowds before choosing where to eat. The catch and individual shop hours affect your options.

Take something home

Fresh fish, dried fish, fish paste products, processed seafood and local products

Consider your journey home and how to keep purchases chilled. Come earlier if fish is your main goal.

Short break with children

Sweets, light food and a bite before Mebaru Park

Eat at the market before going to the park to avoid returning soon after play begins because someone is hungry.

Seasonal fish

Hamo, fish in season and event-only dishes

Hamo Fest and the fish festival can be especially busy. Go early and expect some items to sell out.

Rainy day

Indoor market, second-floor dining room and information corner

Shorten the park visit and have your meal and shopping inside the market. Use the observation deck only if the weather allows.
